Amanda Banker: Garden of Hedon

Opening reception: Friday, June 20, 5:00–7:00pm
Kouri + Corrao is titillated to announce Garden of Hedon, New Mexico-based oil painter Amanda Banker’s third solo show with the gallery. This collection of work is an evolution from static, still-life depictions of a single female form among wealth-signaling symbols to the inhibition of the human form, delighting in an egalitarian setting within the company of like-minded figures.
“I built this body of work to ascertain who we are,” explains Banker. “These pieces are, in a sense, self-portraits; an alter ego I live on canvas. With my own inability and desire to assimilate to the stereotypical definition of ‘woman’ in mind, I designed a space to ignore boundaries and dance naked with no fear of judgement – ultimately challenging the societal norm and embracing freedom at its most simplistic form. My Garden of Hedon is not only a celebration of all things woman, but all things human.”
