SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Baseman and Mills | Selected Works at Studio light | space
DESCRIPTION:Studio light | space presents selected works by Marc Baseman and Wes Mills\, artists whose practices have developed in conversation since their arrival in Taos in 1991. Both have sustained careers of considerable scope. This exhibition focuses on the particular intensity of their drawing practice. \nBaseman’s compositions\, many measuring just over three inches on each side\, achieve their power through precision of means. Working at miniature scale\, he manipulates negative space and layered horizons to create depth that rewards sustained attention. Mills brings parallel rigor to his investigations of geometric abstraction\, balancing systematic structure with the warmth of individual mark-making.\nBoth artists have chosen concentration over expansion\, intimacy over dominance. For each\, drawing functions as a method of inquiry. Constraint generates meaning. Reduction clarifies form. \nThe drawings gathered here are products of time. Decades of looking and making cohere in works that demand careful consideration. In an era that privileges speed and scale\, these works offer an alternative: evidence of what happens when artists commit fully to the surface before them with rigor and care.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: It's all pipes
DESCRIPTION:It’s the end. I didn’t want to know. The pipes are calling. I’m not looking. \nBesides calling\, they’re getting dressed\, they’re making choices\, they’re making decisions and it’s based on something. They’re being watched and they don’t know. They’re looking at something and does this fit? The manual is here and they’re behaving.\nThere’s a story inside a story. The illusion of control. The slice of pie I selected\, the crumbs on the floor. \nBelieve me as pipes. They only exist if you see them. \nTaylor Engel (b. NY\, USA) is an interdisciplinary artist working in performance\, sculpture and installation. Her work has been featured in Southwest Contemporary’s Vol. 12 Obsession and has shown throughout various spaces in Albuquerque\, NM such as the Immanuel Presbyterian Fellowship Hall\, 1415\, Spectra Gallery\, Desert Mystery Center and a number of open spaces and stages throughout the city. She co-runs a monthly experimental presentation series called Presentation Series and participated in Cura and Michele Rizzo’s workshop Coalescing Towards(Rome\, 2025). They received an MFA in Sculpture from The University of New Mexico and a BFA in Graphic Design from Pratt Institute. \nRachel Bordeleau (b. WI\, USA) is an interdisciplinary artist and educator making work about place. Her current practice is rooted in Albuquerque\, New Mexico\, where she works with plants\, archives\, found objects\, image\, and projection to make sculptures and installations. Her practice is research-based and grows from lived experience\, offering stories about life and death cycles\, indeterminacy\, and change. She co-runs the monthly experimental presentation series\, Presentation Series\, and is a member of the SeedBroadcast artist collective. She holds an MFA in Art & Ecology from the University of New Mexico and a BS in Textiles and Fashion Design from the University of Wisconsin – Madison

SUMMARY:Performance: Dance Theatre of Harlem
DESCRIPTION:Dance Theatre of Harlem stands as a dynamic force in the ballet world\, captivating audiences both nationally and internationally. Their repertoire is a thrilling blend of treasured classics\, neoclassical masterpieces by George Balanchine and artistic director Robert Garland\, and cutting-edge contemporary works that embody founder Arthur Mitchell’s belief that ballet is for everyone. Through electrifying performances\, community engagement\, and arts education programs\, Dance Theatre of Harlem champions the power of the arts to inspire and empower. \nSince its founding in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook\, Dance Theatre of Harlem has been hailed as “one of ballet’s most exciting undertakings” (New York Times). Inspired by the work of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Mr. Mitchell established a school to provide Harlem’s youth with the opportunity to explore dance and the allied arts. Now celebrating over fifty-five years of excellence\, DTH has evolved into a globally renowned ballet company\, setting new standards in the performing arts and leaving an indelible mark on the world stage. Their extraordinary legacy continues to open doors for creative expression and artistic brilliance. \nEvent Sponsors: Gina Browning and Joe Illick in memory of Jinny Browning\nCatherine Oppenheimer

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: JULIE SOLA - Best Day Every!
DESCRIPTION:RAY DREW GALLERY Presents JULIE SOLA – Best Day Every!\nA solo exhibition of prints & sculpture. \nMay 7–June 26\nReception May 7\, 5–7pm \n“Drawing on early childhood memories of my grandparents and their Mexican culture and heritage\, my work becomes a whimsical and positive interpretation of various periods of my own life. I am especially inspired by my own experiences working in animal husbandry and ranching. Many times in Mexican folklore animals were often used to teach right from wrong or to explain the current political events. This was one way to keep the rural population informed since many of them were illiterate. Animals often assume human characteristics in my work and I strive to create an open-ended narrative that allows my viewers to create their own story. In some of my current work I am writing and illustrating children’s books. This is a wonderful new challenge that pushes me to look at my work from a different perspective.” —Julie Sola\, FAT CROW PRESS STUDIO & MERCANTILE \nRAY DREW GALLERY\nDONNELLY LIBRARY\nNew Mexico Highlands University\n802 NATIONAL AVE LAS VEGAS NM

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Guadalupe Street Feature: Helen K. Tindel
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, May 8th from 5–7pm \nIn her upcoming exhibition\, Helen Tindel approaches painting as an act of surrender rather than control. Rooted in lineage and a deep connection to place\, her work unfolds intuitively\, unplanned\, unforced\, and guided by an internal knowing rather than external expectation. Each piece emerges as part of a continuous\, living practice\, where color\, form\, and movement arise organically. Tindel does not seek to direct interpretation; instead\, she releases the work into the world\, allowing each viewer to bring their own meaning to what is felt\, seen\, and experienced.

DESCRIPTION:Western Cowboy: Reloaded (May 8–June 20\, 2026)  brings together the work of six Colorado-based photographers Juan Fuentes\, Constance Jaeggi\, Amanda Lopez\, Jack Ludlam\, Rob Hammer\, and Ian Warren to reconsider one of the most enduring figures in American culture: the cowboy. In partnership with Mad Agriculture. This event is free and open to the public. \nWe’re also excited to host multiple panels with the exhibiting artists and community members. There is no cost to participate in any of the events. \nIn-Person Artist Panel Discussion:\nSaturday\, May 9th at 1:00pm—Jonnah Perkins\, Director of Media at Mad Agriculture\, will lead a panel discussion in the gallery with exhibition artists Jack Ludlam\, Ian Warren\, and Rob Hammer. \nVirtual Conversation on Escaramuza\, the Poetics of Home:\nSaturday\, May 16th at 12:00pm (MDT)—Samantha Johnston\, CPAC Executive Director and Curator\, will lead a conversation over Zoom with exhibition artist Constance Jaeggi and Angelina Sáenz\, an award-winning educator\, poet and writing project fellow at UCLA. \nIn-Person Artist Panel Discussion:\nWednesday\, May 27th at 5:30pm—Samantha Johnston\, CPAC Executive Director and Curator\, will lead a panel discussion in the gallery with exhibition artists Constance Jaeggi\, Amanda Lopez\, and Juan Fuentes\, along with Naiomy Torres\, founder of Escaramuza Charra Flor de Aguileña. \nGallery Hours: Tuesday–Friday 11am–5pm\, Saturday 12pm–4pm. \nImage Credit: Tradition\, ©Rob Hammer

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Ray Tigerman: Sacred Spirits
DESCRIPTION:Blue Rain Gallery presents Sacred Spirits\, a solo exhibition by Ray Tigerman with an artist reception and opening on May 8\, 2026\, in conjunction with Durango Gallery Walk. Describing himself as “an abstract artist that paints figures\,” Tigerman works at the intersection of abstraction and figuration\, building richly layered compositions with a palette knife and materials like gold and copper leaf that shift with light and pulse with emotional energy. Rooted in cultural reverence and a deep sensitivity to land and landscape\, his work celebrates what he calls “the apex”—the vibrancy\, resilience\, and spiritual power of his subjects.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Light: An Invitational Exhibition\, curated by Tim Kapustka
DESCRIPTION:Light is widely regarded as a sacred symbol of divinity\, purity and truth across many religions and spiritual traditions. Light can refer to wisdom\, goodness and even life itself. A simple concept with enormous weight and breadth. So too\, for an artist\, light is holy. The illumination of our inspirations can be as important as the creation itself. \nLight is the language of the artist. \nIn these seemingly all encompassing and weighty times\, Light is also the counterpoint to heavy. Lightness and levity level and lessen the gloom\, shrinking it and making it manageable\, while serving as tactics to erode its power. Light wins. \nIt is with these thoughts that Studio & Gallery invited 30 artists to step out of the darkness and celebrate the sacred and mighty and join us in honoring Light in a group invitational exhibit at Studio & Gallery. \nArtists to include:\nMariah Kaminsky • David Holub • Jenn Rawling • Lorna Meaden • Holly Hagan • Miki Harder • Leesa Zarinelli Gawlik • David Butler • Milt Beens • Annie Brooks • Crystal Hartman • Elizabeth Kinahan • Mary Ellen Long • Jacob Brooks • Tim Kapustka • Joe Schafer • Erik Maxson • Jed Webster Smith • Ilze Aviks • Louisa Palmer • Bill Grimes • Dan Groth • Juanita Nelson • Scott Dye • Maureen May • Noah Stotz • Shawn Lotze • Patricia Davidson • Ernie Rheaume • George Schmidt

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Swoon: Into the Forest Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition opening: May 15–6pm. \nExhibition open May 15–July 10\, 2026. \nFor the last few years\, Swoon has been working on her most intimate story and set of characters yet: Sibylant Sisters. This autobiographical\, multidimensional artwork is immersive and vulnerable\, and portrays a magical story set in her childhood through drawing\, painting\, an oracle deck\, and a stop motion film. The artist presents her story so that others can find healing the way she did\, over years of “making the subconscious conscious” by exploring her parents’ opioid addictions through magical realism. SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Lucid Perturbations: The Sewn Drawings and Books of China Marks Part Two
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 15 May 2026 from 5 to 7 p.m. for part two of the opening reception of Lucid Perturbations: The Sewn Drawings and Books of China Marks\, an exhibition of over 200 sewn tableaux by China Marks. Featuring a total of 147 yards of fabric\, a length nearly one and a half times the height of the Statue of Liberty\, this monographic exhibition is installed in the gallery’s 5\,000 square feet of exhibition space\, weaving a tapestry that records a quarter century of an unsung artist’s singular vision and consuming passion for drawing with the sewn line. \nAlthough once lauded by The New York Times arts writer Grace Glueck for the bravura of her avant-garde sewn work\, Marks has remained largely under the radar. Lucid Perturbations presents to the public\, for the first time\, the broadest survey of the psychological nooks and crevices of Marks’s sewn multiverse in all of its dark humor\, aporia\, and wit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Bound by the High Desert: Contemporary Fiber Art
DESCRIPTION:Historic Santa Fe Foundation (HSFF) presents Bound by the High Desert: Contemporary Fiber Art\, opening May 15\, 2026\, at El Zaguán. The exhibition features New Mexico-based artists who transform local materials and time-honored wisdom into modern forms. These artists employ enduring hand-craft traditions\, ensuring that regional fiber arts remain a vibrant\, living practice today. \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION \nThe works in Bound by the High Desert represent a diversity of makers who utilize traditional techniques. While the artworks in this exhibition are contemporary\, they serve as echoes of the past\, drawing on heritage crafts born of utilitarian necessity. Today\, these artists find new freedom to explore fiber as a medium for fine art\, looking back at material and process while also looking forward. \nBy showcasing these tactile\, handmade works against the 1854 handmade adobe walls of the El Zaguán compound\, Historic Santa Fe Foundation celebrates the evolution of these traditions. This exhibition is a testament to how preservation and artistic creation work together to keep our shared cultural heritage alive. \nFeatured Artists: \nNancy Kozikowsk\nPando Speer and Dain Daller (The Warp Zone)\nBenita Ortega-Rael\nAndrea Dupree \nRead more here https://www.historicsantafe.org/fiberart \nContact: Anne Kelly at anne@historicsantafe.org or call 505.983.2567 for more information.
