SUMMARY:Opening: Hand Upon the Land
DESCRIPTION:RULE Gallery is pleased to present Hand Upon the Land\, a group exhibition at RULE Marfa bringing together works by Nathan Abels\, Evan Anderman\, Joseph Coniff\, Jason DeMarte\, Amy Hoagland\, Martha Hughes\, Eun Mi Lam\, and Liz Potter. The exhibition opens Saturday\, June 13\, with a reception from 6–8 pm\, and remains on view through August 1. \nThe show considers landscape not as a distant view but as something shaped by cultivation\, memory\, and patterns of use. Moving between observation and intervention\, the works trace how land is translated through systems of seeing\, acts of care\, material preservation\, and human impulse. Rather than presenting landscape as scenery\, the exhibition considers place as a record of contact and a site of ongoing relationship.

SUMMARY:Martha Invitational
DESCRIPTION:The wildly popular Martha Invitational\, first held in Marfa in 2023\, returns for its second “not-annual” exhibition May 29–30 at RULE Gallery\, Marfa. The artists will be present both days\, with an opening reception and refreshments on Friday evening from 5–7 PM. \nInspired by large-scale art fairs and exhibitions\, three Marfa-based artists\, Martha Hughes\, Diana Simard\, and Leslie Wilkes\, originally conceived Martha Invitational as a small\, self-organized project rooted in conversation\, experimentation\, and a shared sense of humor. The first iteration\, which took place in Hughes’ studio\, was a compact\, low-budget\, high-energy exhibition where all visitors were considered VIPs. (VIP stickers were distributed\, though they conferred no actual privileges.) The Marfa community responded enthusiastically\, and the artists themselves note that they “had a blast.” \nThis year\, the project returns with a renewed focus on the joy of making work and sustaining artistic friendships. With Hughes no longer maintaining a studio in Marfa\, Valerie Santerli\, Director of RULE Gallery\, offered to host the show\, integrating the project into the gallery’s program for a single weekend between scheduled exhibitions. The expanded space allows for the inclusion of a fourth artist\, longtime Marfa resident Bettina Landgrebe. \nMartha Invitational foregrounds the value of artist-driven initiatives\, camaraderie\, and the enduring pleasure of making and sharing work. All works will be available for purchase\, because\, as Hughes notes\, “you know—rent.” \nAdditional exhibitions and open studios will take place across Marfa throughout the weekend\, organized by MarfaMUST.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Signal And Response
DESCRIPTION:RULE Gallery presents: Signal and Return\, two concurrent solo exhibitions featuring paintings by Joe Clower (1937–2024) and Polaroid works by the artist collaborative El Disco. Installed in adjacent galleries\, the exhibition explores the image as both instrument and event—simultaneously a signal transmitted outward and an encounter received in return. \nJoe Clower’s independent studio practice developed a visual language shaped by speculative architecture and idiosyncratic narrative. Working in watercolor and gouache\, Clower constructed scenes in which forms hover between assembly and invention. Drawing from classical scientific mechanisms\, comic-book imagery\, and a distinctly Western horizon\, his paintings compile improbable architectures and symbolic objects into systems of relation. Coils spiral around antennae\, forms extend atop plinths\, and structures appear poised as if awaiting transmission—suggesting environments where tension\, speculation\, and narrative coexist without assumed interpretation. \nIn parallel\, the exhibition presents a focused selection of Polaroids from El Disco’s expansive archive\, produced throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Inspired by observed phenomena\, El Disco formed in 1987 as a three-artist collaborative between Joe Clower\, Steve Thomsen\, and Michael Davey (Tennyson Woodbridge). More than documenting unusual objects in the sky\, El Disco’s Polaroids record the invisible tensions between belief\, environment\, and image\, blurring the line between witness and interpretation. The Polaroid process itself\, a chemistry of diffusion\, migration\, and time-released meaning\, echoes the shifting mystery of light and craft across Western horizons. \nTogether\, the two galleries trace an evolving alchemy of meaning and belief\, asking how both continue to reshape evidence long after the initial moment of exposure.
