SUMMARY:“Zara Kriegstein: A Thousand Points of Light”
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 17: \nOpening Day: 10am-5pm\nPubic Reception: 12-2pm\n(Refreshments provided by The Women’s Board of the Museum of New Mexico) \n“Zara Kriegstein: A Thousand Points of Light” celebrates the work and legacy of one of the unsung muralists and painter-historians to emerge from Northern New Mexico in the late 20th century – Zara Kriegstein (1952–2009). The exhibition brings together her paintings\, prints\, and large-scale public art\, highlighting her dedication to themes of justice\, power\, loss\, memory\, and human desire. \nBorn in West Berlin\, Kriegstein came of age in a physically and ideologically divided environment. Early experiences of political tension in Cold War Germany laid the foundation for Kriegstein’s artistic practice\, which was dedicated to exploring themes of justice\, power\, loss\, memory\, and human desire. Working across painting\, print media\, and public murals\, Kriegstein created bold\, research-driven work about the forces that shape individual lives and communities. After arriving in New Mexico in the late 1970s\, she found a landscape and cultural history that resonated with her longstanding interest in human civilization\, morality\, and social responsibility. Over three decades\, she brought the perspective of an outsider and immigrant to her work\, alongside a deep commitment to research\, writing\, and community organizing. \nLead Image:\nZara Kriegstein\, “The Shallow Breakfast\,” 1991\, color lithograph\, 24 x 18 15/16 in.\, collection of the New Mexico Museum of Art\, gift of Robert M. SUMMARY:Legacies of the Land: Photographs by Joan Myers and Patrick Nagatani
DESCRIPTION:“Legacies of the Land: Photographs by Joan Myers and Patrick Nagatani” explores what remains of sites of Japanese incarceration in the United States\, four of which are in New Mexico. Fears about national security peaked after the Japanese military attacked Pearl Harbor\, Hawaii\, in December 1941. President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an executive order to remove approximately 120\,000 Japanese Americans and people of Japanese descent from their homes on the West Coast to “relocation centers” further inland.

SUMMARY:FIRST FRIDAY - A Painting’s Journey: The History and Conservation of Paul Burlin’s Murals
DESCRIPTION:Join us in St. Francis Auditorium for an enlightening presentation by Bradford Epley (Head of Conservation\, Museum Resources Division) in conjunction with the exhibition “Paul Burlin: An American Modernist in the Southwest” (on view through November 29\, 2026). Topics include how Paul Burlin’s short time in New Mexico is reflected in the content of his paintings\, and his involvement in the larger modernist movements in Europe and the US. See how the paintings once looked\, and how they have changed and been modified over time. The most recent conservation treatment allowed them to be publicly exhibited in a way that better reflects the artist’s aesthetic intentions. \nBrad Epley oversees conservation activities across New Mexico’s state museums and historic sites. Previously\, he served as the Chief Conservator at the Menil Collection in Houston for 23 years. There he co-directed the Artists Documentation Program\, a collaborative interview program with the Whitney Museum of American Art and Harvard Art Museums to record conversations between conservators and contemporary artists documenting the material and conceptual needs of artworks to create a “living will” for their conservation. \nThis program has ASL interpretation. \nImage:\nPaul Burlin\, Untitled (Indian Ceremonial Dance)\, n.d.\, oil on canvas\, 36 × 139 1/4 in. SUMMARY:Fireside Chat: An Evening with Lesley Poling-Kempes
DESCRIPTION:Join us at our Plaza location for a discussion with author Lesley Poling-Kempes about her book “Ladies of the Canyon: A League of Extraordinary Women and Their Adventures in the American Southwest.” \nInspired by the exhibition Paul Burlin: An American Modernist in the Southwest (on view through November 29\, 2026)\, the conversation explores the remarkable life of Natalie Curtis and the extraordinary network of women\, artists\, writers\, and cultural figures who shaped the artistic and intellectual life of the Southwest. Ladies of the Canyon offers a deeper look at this fascinating history and the women whose lives and work helped define an important era in the cultural landscape of Santa Fe and beyond. \nPull up around the “fireplace” in our Plaza location’s lobby with your copy of “Ladies of the Canyon\,” or buy a copy from Rosalie D. and Steven J. Harris gift shop before we start. We encourage people to read the book in advance of our “chat.”
