SUMMARY:Concert: Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain
DESCRIPTION:The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain returns to the Lensic by popular demand. Formed in 1985 as the antidote to mindless pop\, egocentric rock\, and the indulgent bluster of the music business\, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain donned black tuxedos and began giving ‘concerts’ in tiny rooms above old pubs. \nFour decades later\, they’re still thrilling audiences with their off-beat humor and four-stringed virtuosity. There are no drums\, pianos\, backing tracks\, guitars\, or banjos\, no pitch shifters or electronic trickery\, just an astonishing revelation of the rich palette of orchestration afforded by ukuleles and a menagerie of voices in a collision of post-punk performance and old classics. \nEmail

SUMMARY:Performance: Dance Theatre of Harlem
DESCRIPTION:Dance Theatre of Harlem stands as a dynamic force in the ballet world\, captivating audiences both nationally and internationally. Their repertoire is a thrilling blend of treasured classics\, neoclassical masterpieces by George Balanchine and artistic director Robert Garland\, and cutting-edge contemporary works that embody founder Arthur Mitchell’s belief that ballet is for everyone. Through electrifying performances\, community engagement\, and arts education programs\, Dance Theatre of Harlem champions the power of the arts to inspire and empower. \nSince its founding in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook\, Dance Theatre of Harlem has been hailed as “one of ballet’s most exciting undertakings” (New York Times). Inspired by the work of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Mr. Mitchell established a school to provide Harlem’s youth with the opportunity to explore dance and the allied arts. Now celebrating over fifty-five years of excellence\, DTH has evolved into a globally renowned ballet company\, setting new standards in the performing arts and leaving an indelible mark on the world stage. Their extraordinary legacy continues to open doors for creative expression and artistic brilliance. \nEvent Sponsors: Gina Browning and Joe Illick in memory of Jinny Browning\nCatherine Oppenheimer \nEmail

SUMMARY:Concert: El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego
DESCRIPTION:On May 30\, the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live transmission of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera\, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera\, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth\, the story depicts Frida\, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard\, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego\, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. \nThe famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love\, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met-premiere staging of Frank’s opera\, a “confident\, richly imagined score” (New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times). The vibrant new production\, taking enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Diego’s paintings\, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker. \nLocal support for the Met: Live in HD series is provided by The Edward Hastings and Gino Barcone Trust. \nEmail
