SUMMARY:Opening: Dry Land
DESCRIPTION:The show is titled Dry Land\, not only as a reference to the nature of the medium itself\, but also to evoke an idea of safety and rest. “When sailors are out at sea they often are in search of dry land\,” Traer says. “I am not a sailor\, but over the past few years there seems to be a general sense that we are in fact lost at sea — and this show\, I am hoping\, provides some respite from that.” \nThe artists Traer has chosen to bring together for the show draw from diverse backgrounds and practices\, but share a sense of whimsy and tongue-in-cheek humor\, executing formidable structural feats in ways that appear effortless. Ceramic artist and architect Janny Baek creates cloudlike\, anthropomorphic structures that share a similar joyful and buoyant color palette as figurative ceramicist Sara Swink’s small-scale stoneware animal figures. Holly Curcio creates both narrative ceramic sculptures and comics\, and Lisa Smith and her works seem to exist in a similar world as ceramic sculptor Monica Van den Dool’s — both with a darker\, yet still whimsical bent. “Their storytelling is found in tones found in the natural world and their work seems to be sprouting from it\,” Traer observes. “The works for the most part are figurative and if they aren’t specifically figurative they are breathing and existing — each piece of work holds a story\, some more complex or obvious than others\, but they all ask to be viewed with the same care and attention.”

SUMMARY:Zahra Marwan: Is There a Horse on Your Roof?
DESCRIPTION:“I find myself often in disbelief — at how beautiful life can be\, the opportunities that come my way\, at the darkness that ails my family and loved ones\, how I wish politics wouldn’t be so personal\,” says Kuwaiti-born\, Albuquerque-based artist\, author and illustrator Zahra Marwan. \nHer upcoming show negotiates this realm of disbelief. Its title—Is There a Horse on Your Roof?—comes from Maurice Sendak’s debut children’s picture book\, Kenny’s Window\, which tells the story of a young boy’s quest to find the magical garden he dreams about\, helped along the way by his toys in a blend of realism and imagination. To Marwan\, the book is a meditation on loneliness and love in a dream-like world. \nMarwan’s work is at once deeply personal\, populated by the people\, places and memories of her own life\, and universal\, inviting viewers to reflect on moments of beauty and connection in their own lives. It carries a profound sense of reverence for the fleeting instances of love and care that reconnect us with our humanity\, even in the darkest times. \n“What sustains me\, and continued to sustain me during the war (was it a war?) are loving relations\,” Marwan says. “The quiet moments with people. People whose hearts are in the right place. And the ocean of patience I maintain with social decorum living in a place actively inflicting harm on my home\, while unable to live in the place my family always belonged. Navigating grim politics between one nation to another\, I acclimate to beauty among the grief.”

SUMMARY:Opening: Annalise Gratovich: Carrying Things From Home
DESCRIPTION:Printmaker Annalise Gratovich’s graphic iconography employs symbols of personal and cultural identity\, signaling togetherness through a scattered Ukrainian diaspora. \nThe figures in her work are totemic beings that explore personal and cultural identity; vessels based on the form of the stacking matryoshka doll. They are adorned in textiles and patterns informed by Indigenous Ukrainian textiles\, embroidery\, and ceremonial dress\, as well as vintage American western wear. “The patterns are used to allude to distant homelands- places that are lost or cannot be returned to\,” Gratovich says. Flora and fauna of the American South and Southwest adorn and surround her figures\, rooting them in place and symbolizing interdependency\, resiliency\, and generational survival. \nHer hand-carved woodcuts take months to complete\, and are then meticulously colored with hand-dyed papers—a process that can take more than a month. She prints these by hand at Flatbed Press in Austin\, Texas with a team of three to four other printers. The process of dyeing and cutting the paper to adorn these prints with color is evocative of traditional arts of Ukraine including the dyed egg (pysanky)\, and slavic papercuts (vytynanky).

SUMMARY:Opening: Alberto Cruz: Wild Company
DESCRIPTION:In his most recent project\, Oaxacan artist Alberto Cruz depicts the connections between childhood and nature through a collection of twenty-one linocuts featuring diverse ecosystems as settings for new visual stories about children and animals. \nThe series is organized in seven thematic groupings\, each corresponding to a distinct ecosystem and composed of three images: safari\, lake\, beach\, North Pole\, forest\, mountain\, and desert. Across these images we see children embarking on adventures alongside birds\, elephants\, hippopotamuses\, polar bears\, dogs\, reptiles\, and other quadrupeds. \nThe creativity of children’s minds has always been a central theme in Cruz’s work. They are the protagonists in this series\, depicted as free\, strong\, dignified\, and meditative human beings\, with animals as allies\, travel guides\, and companions. Cruz typically makes art for people of all ages\, but children are the intended primary audience for this project—a sensibility rooted in his four years teaching art to kindergarten and elementary students in Oaxaca\, an experience he credits with reshaping how he sees the world.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Kat Kinnick: Flowering Animals
DESCRIPTION:“Paying attention to what’s outside\, beyond walls\, fences and myths of the modern world\, my painting process inspires me to become more aware\, attuned and present\,” says painter\, illustrator\, printmaker and ceramicist Kat Kinnick. “My art creates a world where animals are reflections of our inner landscape and intimate friends. Nature offers solitude and quiet; a place where you can reset and ground and the loudness and chaos of the world quiets.” \nIllustrating wildlife and the wilderness of the high desert of New Mexico\, Kinnick works to inspire a culture of connectedness to nature. Drawing on the magic and inexplicable qualities of childhood\, her work celebrates the region’s unique ecology and abundant diversity. “Kat’s work uses animals and nature as metaphors for the human world\, deeply connected to the environment and other species\,” says Hecho a Mano’s owner\, Frank Rose. “Through beauty and cuteness\, predation and vulnerability\, her paintings are not representations of animals as much as they are a mirror to ourselves. They have the ability to disarm the viewer and if one is open enough\, recognize their own nature.” \nThe concept for her forthcoming solo exhibition\, Flowering Animals\, grew organically from an artist residency Kinnick attended in Oaxaca\, Mexico. “The most striking thing about Oaxaca is how warm and kind the people are\,” the artist says. “There’s a colorful vitality to the city that’s steeped in reciprocity\, craftsmanship\, culture\, food and art.
