SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Kat Kinnick: Flowering Animals
DESCRIPTION:“Paying attention to what’s outside\, beyond walls\, fences and myths of the modern world\, my painting process inspires me to become more aware\, attuned and present\,” says painter\, illustrator\, printmaker and ceramicist Kat Kinnick. “My art creates a world where animals are reflections of our inner landscape and intimate friends. Nature offers solitude and quiet; a place where you can reset and ground and the loudness and chaos of the world quiets.” \nIllustrating wildlife and the wilderness of the high desert of New Mexico\, Kinnick works to inspire a culture of connectedness to nature. Drawing on the magic and inexplicable qualities of childhood\, her work celebrates the region’s unique ecology and abundant diversity. “Kat’s work uses animals and nature as metaphors for the human world\, deeply connected to the environment and other species\,” says Hecho a Mano’s owner\, Frank Rose. “Through beauty and cuteness\, predation and vulnerability\, her paintings are not representations of animals as much as they are a mirror to ourselves. They have the ability to disarm the viewer and if one is open enough\, recognize their own nature.” \nThe concept for her forthcoming solo exhibition\, Flowering Animals\, grew organically from an artist residency Kinnick attended in Oaxaca\, Mexico. “The most striking thing about Oaxaca is how warm and kind the people are\,” the artist says. “There’s a colorful vitality to the city that’s steeped in reciprocity\, craftsmanship\, culture\, food and art. I wanted to bring this sensation of life into this body of work.” \nOpening Friday May 1\, 5–7pm\nArtist Talk Sunday May 3\, 12–1:30 \nEmail

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, HALEY GREENFEATHER ENGLISH: A HEAVY BIRDEN
DESCRIPTION:Greenfeather English is an artist of Red Lake and Turtle Mountain Ojibwe heritage known for her playful portraits and bold\, lively color palette. She was born and raised in Albuquerque\, New Mexico\, and earned her Bachelor’s of Fine Art at the Institute of American Indian Arts in 2018\, where she honed her skills in painting and printmaking and developed an artistic practice inspired by keen observation\, personal stories\, and memory\, challenging conventional understandings of reality influenced by western cultural perspectives. \nIn the artist’s own words\, A Heavy Birden is a show about long drives\, whimsy\, nostalgia\, love\, shadows\, clowns\, grief\, and birds. This unexpected assortment of concepts is characteristic of Greenfeather English’s practice—she is known for crafting startling juxtapositions that shift perceptions of the worlds she renders\, and of the tangible realities of day-to-day life. And while each element might seem discrete\, each plays an integral role in conjuring Greenfeather English’s world—one where whimsy and humor serve as teachers. \nWhen she’s not making art\, Greenfeather English can be found teaching children\, who\, she says\, have an organic ability to both make and appreciate art\, especially when it comes with a dose of humor. She hopes that her audiences will approach her work in the same way\, with a sense of levity and childlike wonder. \nEmail

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, KATE WOOD: VARIATIONS ON A THEME
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Albuquerque\, New Mexico\, and now living with her family in a rural mountain village on the High Road to Taos\, Wood is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in painting\, illustration\, and paper mache sculpture. She considers herself a play-based artist\, and her work explores themes of relationship\, family\, body language\, communication\, and the point at which personal experience transcends identity and becomes collective consciousness. Story and artifact are central to her artistic practice\, which employs a cast of glyphs rooted in archetype and mythology to construct visual narratives that invite viewers to find their own stories reflected in the work. \nWood’s work in Variations on a Theme is an expansion of her recent series of paintings\, A really good date I-IV\, which explore the idea of platonic intimacy through a sequence of interactions taking place between two dog-like figures. “I’ve been thematically curious about the bounds and limits of closeness and connection\, and what shape intimacy can take outside the constructs of romantic relationship\,” the artist says. Her new work deepens this original exploration\, isolating five pairs of dogs from the original series to illustrate what can develop from a single interaction. The resulting 26 new paintings rendered in ink and gouache are pattern-based mutations of the original pairing that\, for Wood\, express the infinite potential of human encounter\, relationship\, and love. \nEmail

SUMMARY:JUANA ESTRADA HERNÁNDEZ: LOS CAMINOS DE LA VIDA\, DESDE AQUI PARA ALLÁ
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to come home? This is the question posed by Mexican printmaker Juana Estrada Hernández’s upcoming show at Hecho a Mano\, asking audiences to consider the complex ideas and emotions surrounding the concept of homecoming—especially when home isn’t something that can be readily returned to\, or taken for granted. \nHer second show at Hecho a Mano speaks directly to this theme. Inspired by the artist’s recent visit to her motherland of Zacatecas\, Mexico after a twenty-two year absence\, Estrada Hernández’s new show highlights and honors the idea of homecoming through a series of prints and ceramic pieces. “My solo exhibition at Hecho a Mano this spring shares my experience of reconnection\, joy\, and the complexity of what it means to come Home\,” Estrada Hernández says. She depicts realistic and chimerical scenes from Zacatecas\, as well as culturally significant places like Cerro de la Bufa\, a hill that lies to the east of historic downtown Zacatecas that captured her imagination during her recent visit. \nEmail
