SUMMARY:Janel Garza: New Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Faust Galleries will present a special showcase of work by Arizona-based artist Janel Garza on Friday\, October 9\, from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibition features Meditations\, a series of abstract geometric paintings exploring harmony\, balance\, interconnectedness\, and the patterns that shape both the natural world and our internal lives. \n“The Meditations are a series of paintings that originate from an automatic sketching practice I have developed over the years\,” says Garza. “With the use of graph paper as a form of scaffolding and structure\, I sink into an aimless and meditative state and allow the lines of the graph paper to guide my pencil. The paintings are a refinement and elevated result of these sketches.” \nGarza\, based in Prescott\, Arizona\, draws on her background in environmental science and Western herbalism to investigate living systems\, patterns\, and relationships. Working across painting\, sculpture\, textiles\, public art\, and installation\, she follows each idea into the medium and scale it demands while maintaining a visual language rooted in geometry\, rhythm\, and the dialogue between structure and organic form. \n“With these compositions\, the shapes and symbols take on numerous meanings for me and the viewer\,” says Garza. “I see these patterns and shapes as a kind of universal language which can take on and represent numerous relationships and processes seen throughout the natural world and within our internal worlds.” \nHer practice examines relationships between people and place\, material and meaning\, the natural world and the built environment\, and ultimately the artwork and the viewer. Meditations invites audiences to slow down\, notice recurring forms\, and experience connection within an increasingly fragmented world.
