SUMMARY:Workshop: Mindful Making: Creating Wet-Felted Vessels
DESCRIPTION:The Historic Santa Fe Foundation is excited to present a one-day Wet-Felting workshop with Andrea Dupree. \nMindful Making: Creating Wet-Felted Vessels \nSaturday\, May 23\, 2026\, 1–4pm \n$125 (includes materials) \nJoin artist and educator Andrea Dupree for a hands-on wet felting workshop that blends fiber art techniques with mindfulness practices and creative exploration. Participants will learn to make wool vessels using water\, natural soap and wool. Wet felting is an ancient fiber art technique that transforms loose fibers\, such as wool\, into a dense\, durable\, non-woven fabric. \nThe class begins with a short grounding practice to help participants attune to breath\, body\, and materials. Throughout the session\, Andrea will guide you through the wet-felting process to create hollow vessels. We’ll explore the rich sensory elements of these materials and engage in a slow\, thoughtful process that honors the meditative nature of felting. \nNo prior experience is needed\, and all materials are provided. Come ready to work with your hands and leave with a one-of-a-kind felted vessel and a deeper connection to fiber and form. \nBio: \nAndrea Dupree is an eco-artist and educator based in the Pojoaque Valley. Her fiber-based artwork explores themes of interconnectedness and ecological attunement\, primarily using hand felting\, embroidery\, found\, and natural materials. With a background in Studio Arts (BFA) and Reggio-inspired Early Childhood Education (MA)\, Andrea is also a Registered Yoga Teacher who brings over 20 years of experience teaching art\, mindfulness\, and movement. Learn more about her work here: bluebird-art.com or instagram @andreadupree \nThe workshop will be held at El Zaguán\, located at 545 Canyon Road\, Santa Fe\, NM 87501. For more information\, please contact Anne Kelly at anne@historicsantafe.org.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Bound by the High Desert: Contemporary Fiber Art
DESCRIPTION:Historic Santa Fe Foundation (HSFF) presents Bound by the High Desert: Contemporary Fiber Art\, opening May 15\, 2026\, at El Zaguán. The exhibition features New Mexico-based artists who transform local materials and time-honored wisdom into modern forms. These artists employ enduring hand-craft traditions\, ensuring that regional fiber arts remain a vibrant\, living practice today. \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION \nThe works in Bound by the High Desert represent a diversity of makers who utilize traditional techniques. While the artworks in this exhibition are contemporary\, they serve as echoes of the past\, drawing on heritage crafts born of utilitarian necessity. Today\, these artists find new freedom to explore fiber as a medium for fine art\, looking back at material and process while also looking forward. \nBy showcasing these tactile\, handmade works against the 1854 handmade adobe walls of the El Zaguán compound\, Historic Santa Fe Foundation celebrates the evolution of these traditions. This exhibition is a testament to how preservation and artistic creation work together to keep our shared cultural heritage alive. \nFeatured Artists: \nNancy Kozikowsk\nPando Speer and Dain Daller (The Warp Zone)\nBenita Ortega-Rael\nAndrea Dupree \nRead more here https://www.historicsantafe.org/fiberart \nContact: Anne Kelly at anne@historicsantafe.org or call 505.983.2567 for more information.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening\, Desert Drift: New Works by Elaine Ritchel
DESCRIPTION:Historic Santa Fe Foundation is pleased to announce Desert Drift\, an exhibition of acrylic and watercolor skyscapes by Santa Fe-based painter\, educator\, and writer Elaine Ritchel. The exhibition will be on view at the Gallery at El Zaguán on Canyon Road. \nExhibition Statement Desert Drift explores ephemerality\, the subtle thresholds between states of being\, and the experience of being held in liminality. The work centers on three elemental subjects—clouds\, the moon\, and the horizon—that embody both continuity and flux. \n“In New Mexico\, the horizon is a constant presence\,” says Ritchel. “I find it fascinating that although we can always see it\, we can never reach it. But in that endless quest\, that perpetual drift\, we are always accompanied by the sky above and the ground below.” \nThis body of work emerged from a deeply personal period of transition for the artist. Through soft layering and loose rendering\, Ritchel captures a sense of “shimmering ether” and shifting light\, allowing her painted clouds to undulate\, breathe\, and dissipate. The result is a series of images that feel soft\, ethereal\, and alive\, inviting viewers to feel immersed and held by the presence of the desert sky. \nAbout the Artist: \nElaine Ritchel is a Santa Fe-based painter\, educator\, and writer. She is currently an artist in residence at El Zaguan. She holds an MA in Art History and has worked as a gallery teacher and guest educator with arts institutions in the US and abroad\, including the UNM Art Museum\, the Blanton Museum of Art\, the New Mexico Museum of Art\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb. Her arts writing has been published in Southwest Contemporary and New Mexico Magazine. \nContact: Anne Kelly at anne@historicsantafe.org or call 505.983.2567 for more information.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Darrah Blackwater Allocations: Self-Determination From Inside the Earth\, Outward
DESCRIPTION:ARTIST RECEPTION FRIDAY\, March 20\, 2026 | 5-7 PM | EXHIBITION IS ON VIEW THROUGH SATURDAY\, April 11\, 2026 AT HSFF’S EL ZAGUÁN\, 545 CANYON ROAD\, SANTA FE\, NEW MEXICO \nAllocations: Self-Determination From Inside the Earth\, Outward is Darrah Blackwater’s first solo show. Focusing on multiple facets of how United States laws and policies have impacted and affected the ability of Indigenous nations and Indigenous people to determine their lives and their futures\, this show focuses on the concept of spectrum sovereignty\, or the use and control of radio waves on tribal lands. \nThis issue epitomizes the importance of self-determination for Indigenous nations in the modern era\, as wireless communications affect the everyday lives of Americans\, including Indigenous people living on reservations. Similarly\, the Dawes Act\, the Indian Child Welfare Act and the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives are examples of how\, over centuries\, the United States has attempted or failed to acknowledge or protect the rights of Indigenous peoples through “allocations” of land\, children\, and respect. \nAllocations: From Inside the Earth Outward challenges the scarcity reality that colonization has imposed on Indigenous communities by examining the concept of different allocations of rights and resources the United States has made to Tribes and Indigenous people. Further\, this show raises the questions of who has the right to make these allocations to Indigenous nations\, and whether an allocation is. \nDarrah Blackwater is an artist and attorney\, originally from Farmington\, New Mexico. She is a citizen of the Navajo Nation\, and focuses much of her work on advocating for the rights of Indigenous people\, with an emphasis on Indigenous spectrum sovereignty\, or the right for Indigenous people to own and control radio waves on tribal lands. \nContact: Anne Kelly at anne@historicsantafe.org or call 505.983.2567 for more information.
