SUMMARY:Cara Barer: Camera Work
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Couturier Gallery is pleased to present Cara Barer: Camera Work\, the gallery’s second solo exhibition by the Houston-based artist. Through this stunning new body of work\, she breathes new life into old books\, exploring the ephemerality of the physical medium in today’s digital age. \nBarer’s unique approach begins with the hand-sculpting and dyeing of disused books; old manuals\, outdated reference books\, and the like are selected for their obsolete value\, long since replaced by online materials. In prior bodies of work\, these sculptural objects are then photographed using a scanner\, capturing a single dimension of the book. Barer kept each and every sculpture and slowly began to look at them from new angles. In Camera Work\, Barer abandons the scanner bed for the camera\, photographing the sculptures in the natural light of the studio\, waiting for the perfect light each day and exposing new dimensions to the work. The resulting images are vibrant\, sun-drenched\, and entirely captivating. \nCara Barer has exhibited in solo and group shows throughout the US and Canada since 1994. Her work has been featured extensively in such publications as New York Magazine\, The Washington Post\, Harper’s Magazine\, The Boston Globe and The New Yorker\, and can be found in the collections of Bloomingdale’s\, Saks\, Lehigh University\, Nordstrom\, United States Embassy\, Kyiv\, Ukraine\, VISA\, Wells Fargo Bank and Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston. \nPlease join us for the opening reception on Saturday\, October 10 from 5 to 7 pm at Catherine Couturier Gallery!

SUMMARY:Opening: Henry Horenstein: Miles and Miles of Texas
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Couturier Gallery presents Henry Horenstein’s Miles and Miles of Texas. This series\, published in an eponymous book in 2025 by Honky Tonk Editions\, explores the people and culture of Texas through the eyes of Horenstein\, a Bostonian fascinated with the Lone Star State from a young age. From the TV series Davy Crockett to balladeers like Marty Robbins\, Texan culture has left an indelible mark\, shining brightly in the imaginations of folks the world over. \n“Miles and Miles of Texas is a personal nod to Lone Star culture\, history\, landscape\, and most of all the people I met along the way-“some of the friendliest people you’ll ever see” (“It’s a Texas Thing\,” Gary P. Nunn). And while I nodded\, I got to eat some tasty barbecue\, listen to inspired music\, hear some heartfelt and hilarious stories\, and drink a lot of cold beer. Plus\, I got to make pictures I like and put them down into this book.” – Henry Horenstein \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by screenings of Horenstein’s short film Spoke\, an homage to the rich culture of Texas dance halls. View the trailer here. \nHorenstein studied history at the University of Chicago and earned his BFA and MFA at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD)\, where he studied with legends Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. His work is collected and exhibited internationally and he has published over 40 books\, including several monographs of his own work such as Miles and Miles of Texas\, Honky Tonk\, Histories\, Show\, Animalia\, Humans\, Racing Days\, Close Relations\, and many others. He has also authored Black & White Photography\, Digital Photography\, and Beyond Basic Photography\, used by hundreds of thousands of college\, university\, high-school\, and art school students as their introduction to photography.
