SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Mosaics with Kristin Javier
DESCRIPTION:Kristin Javier will have an Artist Talk on Friday\, April 17th\, 2026\, 2pm about her new exhibition Mosaics: Into the Light. Snacks and beverages will be served. \nKristin’s Statement: \n“I speak in dialects of brokenness and light. Mosaic becomes a metaphor for restoration.\nMy practice is a dialogue between the visions in my mind\, the hammer\, and the stone.\nMy process is deeply rooted in ancient methods.\nI ask each tessera to break using only hand tools\, cutting each piece with a carbide tipped hammer and a pitched anvil called a hardie.\nI place each fragment directly into thinset tinted with earth oxides. I allow each shard to stand as its own sculpture\, possessing the power to reflect\, refract\, or absorb light.\nInitially self-taught using broken ceramic shards\, I eventually sought the rigor of Classical training at Studio Arte del Mosaico in Ravenna Italy and The Chicago Mosaic School.\nMy work is an exploration of the mystical\, and a manifestation of the resilience of the human spirit.\nEvery Mosaic created over the past six years represents a step in my healing journey toward the light.”

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Mosaics: Into the Light
DESCRIPTION:Reception with the artist on Fri\, April 10th from 5pm-8pm. \nArtist Bio\nKristin Javier is perhaps an unlikely artist. Born in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky\, her childhood was shaped by life outdoors—hiking wooded hills\, racing barefoot through grass\, and searching creek beds for fossils alongside her five siblings. \nHer path led her to the University of New Mexico\, where she studied education and Spanish and Italian translation. Though she once felt rooted in the Land of Enchantment\, life eventually called her back East. After decades away\, she has returned to New Mexico\, completing a full-circle journey to the place that first inspired her. \nBetween 2017 and 2018\, while raising two daughters\, a life-altering brain infection forced her to rebuild her life step by step. During this difficult recovery\, she discovered the healing power of art. With support from family\, friends\, and a vibrant creative community\, she has committed to a daily mosaic practice for the past six years. A devoted student of the medium\, Kristin continues to explore what she has yet to understand\, guided by faith and the belief that every person carries a unique light. \nToday\, she divides her time between Northern New Mexico’s high desert and New York’s Hudson Valley\, weaving both landscapes into her work. \nArtist Statement\nI speak in dialects of brokenness and light; mosaic becomes a metaphor for restoration. My practice is a dialogue between vision\, hammer\, and stone\, rooted in ancient methods. \nEach tessera is shaped by hand using a carbide-tipped hammer and hardie. Set into tinted thinset\, every fragment stands as its own sculpture\, reflecting\, refracting\, or absorbing light. \nTrained in Ravenna\, Italy\, and Chicago\, my work explores the mystical and embodies resilience—each piece a step toward healing and light.
