SUMMARY:Opening: Broom Room Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, every culture has gathered fiber together and swept. Brooms\, brushes\, and sweeping are an intimate part of our collective domestic history\, and Julia Tait Dickenson proudly creates her pieces as an extension of that time-honored tradition. \nHer work showcases pieces that are both recognizable in their original form and strikingly transformed into something entirely new. Julia delights in finding discarded objects and discovering innovative ways to create brooms and brushes\, seamlessly incorporating traditional processes with found objects that have been used and feel good in the hand. \nThis exhibition highlights her recent experimentation with abstract ideas\, challenging both her own creativity and traditional confines to create new\, unexpected broom structures. Through this process\, she beautifully captures and preserves the feeling of an object’s original use while breathing new life into it. \nJulia lived in Santa Fe in the late 1980s and ’90s\, making her living as a jeweler\, before returning from Vermont in 2021 as a fiber artist and broom maker under her studio name\, Thinair Goods. We were honored to have Julia as an artist-in-residence here at El Zaguán until 2025. Currently\, her studio is located in the historic downtown Santa Fe area\, where she warmly welcomes visitors. \nThin Air Goods brings beauty and soul into objects intended for everyday use. \nContact: Anne Kelly at anne@historicsantafe.org or call 505.983.2567 for more information.

SUMMARY:Support Preserving Place: The Santa Fe Continuum Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The upcoming ‘Preserving Place: The Santa Fe Continuum’ explores the aspects of Santa Fe that have made it an attractive tourist and re-location destination for decades while looking at the many dualities that may create the disconnect in communication and social cohesiveness resulting from preserving the aesthetics primarily of the architecture of downtown Santa Fe. Preservation and its intersection with social issues proves to be a highly relevant topic especially on the occasion of the revisions of and changes to Santa Fe’s General Plan and Land Use Code. This year we want to explore the connections between the various sections of town – downtown\, midtown\, and southside and growth in the surrounding County; how the City and the County work together in governing this development\, and what can be done to connect these areas and communicate more about issues in the various neighborhoods and communities in Santa Fe. The goal is to foster discussion about social\, planning\, development\, and architecture-related issues around housing\, development\, adaptive reuse\, and designing for the New Mexico climate using our preservation of the historical character of Santa Fe as a basis for these discussions. This event will take place at the New Mexico History Museum in a day-long event of three panels and an open forum \nSanta Fe stands at a pivotal moment. The Santa Fe Continuum convenes civic leaders\, architects/builders\, developers\, preservationists\, and community voices to explore how our past informs an equitable and sustainable future. The choices we make now about housing\, urban design\, and growth will determine not only what our city looks like\, but who can call it home. Continuum 2026 brings us together to ask a shared question: How do we preserve Santa Fe’s sense of place while addressing issues of land use\, growth\, and affordability? \nInquire at info@historicsantafe.org

SUMMARY:Opening: The Artistry of Dorothy Stewart
DESCRIPTION:Opening May 29\, 2026\, Historic Santa Fe Foundation is proud to celebrate the centennial of the Stewart sisters’ arrival on Canyon Road. In honor of this anniversary\, we invite you to a retrospective of the work of Dorothy Stewart (1891–1955)\, a pioneer of the Santa Fe art community and the founder of Pictograph Press. \nThis exhibition features over twenty original woodblock prints on translucent paper\, rare hand-printed editions of her Shakespearean volumes\, Hamlet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, and select oil paintings that capture the architectural and cultural soul of the Southwest. Hosted at the Thaw Education & Research Center in the Edwin Brooks House(adjacent to El Zaguán)\, the show offers an intimate look at Stewart’s technical evolution from her classical roots to the bold\, monochromatic mastery that defined her career in New Mexico. \nDorothy Newkirk Stewart was a force in the Santa Fe Artist Colony and a vibrant\, central presence on Canyon Road during the height of its creative awakening. Born in Philadelphia and classically trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, Stewart’s move to New Mexico in 1925 represented a radical embrace of the “City Different.” Her career was marked by a relentless curiosity\, moving seamlessly between the worlds of painting\, fresco\, printmaking\, and independent publishing\, while also serving the community as a dedicated gallery director. \nThe sisters’ impact on Santa Fe was both creative and structural. While Dorothy focused on her artistic output\, her sister Margretta Dietrich became a titan of local preservation. It was Margretta who purchased El Zaguán specifically to protect the historic property from redevelopment\, ensuring its survival as the cultural landmark that now serves as the home of the Historic Santa Fe Foundation. \nContact Anne Kelly at anne@historicsantafe.org
