The Colorado Photographic Arts Center presents OUTCRY, a powerful and timely project by nationally acclaimed photographer and women’s rights activist Whitney Bradshaw, opening May 26, 2023.
“We are honored to present OUTCRY as the first exhibition in CPAC’s new space,” said Samantha Johnston, CPAC’s Executive Director and Curator. “With the overturning of Roe v. Wade and concerns about diminishing reproductive rights, there’s never been a better time to share OUTCRY with our community in a safe, welcoming space for reflection and dialogue.”
Since Bradshaw launched the OUTCRY project on the night of the 2018 Women’s March, the series has grown to include more than 440 photos of women from all walks of life who have chosen to take a stand against a culture that too often dismisses women’s voices. Drawing from her background in social work, the Chicago-based artist invites small groups of women who are not previously acquainted with each other to gather for “scream sessions,” where they can express emotions—ranging from rage to sorrow to laughter—in a safe and supportive environment designed to cultivate a spirit of feminist solidarity across different life experiences. The resulting photo portraits challenge expectations around how women—and in particular, women’s anger—are portrayed in traditional portraiture and mainstream culture.
Opening Reception will be Friday, June 2 from 6 – 9pm. This event is free and open to the public.
The show can otherwise be viewed during normal gallery hours. Tuesday – Friday 11:00 am – 5:00 pm and Saturday 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm.
