Anamnesis – The Remembering of Things is a solo exhibition featuring the work of installation and multi-media artist Christy Ferrato. Works featured in Anamnesis explore contemporary social issues including school massacres, and a commonplace review of laws, codes, ordinances, and executive orders that have marginalized different groups of people across time. Working from a poetic foundation, Anamnesis anchors historical truths and their responsibilities, raising questions about erasure, historical omission, complicity, and the ongoingness of events that connect the past to the present.
Influenced by Ann Hamilton, Jenny Holzer, Joy Harjo, and other artists who work with poetry in performative contexts, Ferrato’s work with poetry off the page incorporates common materials, sound, and source texts to examine discarded history and give voice to what has been forgotten and lost in the shadows of silence.
Based in Durango, Colorado, Ferrato has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Denver and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. The author of two poetry collections, her honors include nominations for Best New Poet, the Willow Award, and two Pushcart Prize Awards. Her work has been featured in exhibitions, lectures, publications, and poetry performances including the Fort Collins Museum of Contemporary Art, the Durango Arts Center, the Ft. Lewis College Art Gallery, the Vermont College of Fine Arts, the Lake Eden Arts Festival, the Taos Poetry Festival, and the Re(dress) Poetry series in Los Angeles.
