SUMMARY:Workshop: Mindful Making: Creating Wet-Felted Vessels
DESCRIPTION:The Historic Santa Fe Foundation is excited to present a one-day Wet-Felting workshop with Andrea Dupree. \nMindful Making: Creating Wet-Felted Vessels \nSaturday\, May 23\, 2026\, 1–4pm \n$125 (includes materials) \nJoin artist and educator Andrea Dupree for a hands-on wet felting workshop that blends fiber art techniques with mindfulness practices and creative exploration. Participants will learn to make wool vessels using water\, natural soap and wool. Wet felting is an ancient fiber art technique that transforms loose fibers\, such as wool\, into a dense\, durable\, non-woven fabric. \nThe class begins with a short grounding practice to help participants attune to breath\, body\, and materials. Throughout the session\, Andrea will guide you through the wet-felting process to create hollow vessels. We’ll explore the rich sensory elements of these materials and engage in a slow\, thoughtful process that honors the meditative nature of felting. \nNo prior experience is needed\, and all materials are provided. Come ready to work with your hands and leave with a one-of-a-kind felted vessel and a deeper connection to fiber and form. \nBio: \nAndrea Dupree is an eco-artist and educator based in the Pojoaque Valley. Her fiber-based artwork explores themes of interconnectedness and ecological attunement\, primarily using hand felting\, embroidery\, found\, and natural materials. With a background in Studio Arts (BFA) and Reggio-inspired Early Childhood Education (MA)\, Andrea is also a Registered Yoga Teacher who brings over 20 years of experience teaching art\, mindfulness\, and movement. Learn more about her work here: bluebird-art.com or instagram @andreadupree \nThe workshop will be held at El Zaguán\, located at 545 Canyon Road\, Santa Fe\, NM 87501. For more information\, please contact Anne Kelly at anne@historicsantafe.org.

SUMMARY:Curator Talk: Lucid Perturbations: The Sewn Drawings and Books of China Marks
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 16\, 2026\, from 2–3 p.m. for a curator talk about Lucid Perturbations and the sewn works of China Marks\, featuring gallery director Carina Evangelista and longtime friend of China Marks\, Pamela Matsuda-Dunn\, also an artist. Evangelista and Matsuda-Dunn will lead us through Marks’s unorthodox sewn multiverse of allegory\, dark humor\, and wit\, offering insights into what possessed Marks to produce\, with singular focus\, over 600 sewn tableaux in the last twenty-three years of her art practice. \nEvangelista and Matsuda-Dunn will also share how Lucid Perturbations came to be; the artists’ cache of references for the largely allegorical works; and the process behind the artist’s sewn oeuvre. A rare opportunity to gain insight into the world of an unsung artist’s life and practice\, this conversation accompanies China Marks’s largest solo exhibition.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Bound by the High Desert: Contemporary Fiber Art
DESCRIPTION:Historic Santa Fe Foundation (HSFF) presents Bound by the High Desert: Contemporary Fiber Art\, opening May 15\, 2026\, at El Zaguán. The exhibition features New Mexico-based artists who transform local materials and time-honored wisdom into modern forms. These artists employ enduring hand-craft traditions\, ensuring that regional fiber arts remain a vibrant\, living practice today. \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION \nThe works in Bound by the High Desert represent a diversity of makers who utilize traditional techniques. While the artworks in this exhibition are contemporary\, they serve as echoes of the past\, drawing on heritage crafts born of utilitarian necessity. Today\, these artists find new freedom to explore fiber as a medium for fine art\, looking back at material and process while also looking forward. \nBy showcasing these tactile\, handmade works against the 1854 handmade adobe walls of the El Zaguán compound\, Historic Santa Fe Foundation celebrates the evolution of these traditions. This exhibition is a testament to how preservation and artistic creation work together to keep our shared cultural heritage alive. \nFeatured Artists: \nNancy Kozikowsk\nPando Speer and Dain Daller (The Warp Zone)\nBenita Ortega-Rael\nAndrea Dupree \nRead more here https://www.historicsantafe.org/fiberart \nContact: Anne Kelly at anne@historicsantafe.org or call 505.983.2567 for more information.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Lucid Perturbations: The Sewn Drawings and Books of China Marks Part Two
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 15 May 2026 from 5 to 7 p.m. for part two of the opening reception of Lucid Perturbations: The Sewn Drawings and Books of China Marks\, an exhibition of over 200 sewn tableaux by China Marks. Featuring a total of 147 yards of fabric\, a length nearly one and a half times the height of the Statue of Liberty\, this monographic exhibition is installed in the gallery’s 5\,000 square feet of exhibition space\, weaving a tapestry that records a quarter century of an unsung artist’s singular vision and consuming passion for drawing with the sewn line. \nAlthough once lauded by The New York Times arts writer Grace Glueck for the bravura of her avant-garde sewn work\, Marks has remained largely under the radar. Lucid Perturbations presents to the public\, for the first time\, the broadest survey of the psychological nooks and crevices of Marks’s sewn multiverse in all of its dark humor\, aporia\, and wit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Swoon: Into the Forest Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition opening: May 15–6pm. \nExhibition open May 15–July 10\, 2026. \nFor the last few years\, Swoon has been working on her most intimate story and set of characters yet: Sibylant Sisters. This autobiographical\, multidimensional artwork is immersive and vulnerable\, and portrays a magical story set in her childhood through drawing\, painting\, an oracle deck\, and a stop motion film. The artist presents her story so that others can find healing the way she did\, over years of “making the subconscious conscious” by exploring her parents’ opioid addictions through magical realism. Artwork from Sibylant Sisters will be the focus of Into the Forest. Her oracle deck will be debuted at the opening\, where Swoon will be giving readings.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Guadalupe Street Feature: Helen K. Tindel
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, May 8th from 5–7pm \nIn her upcoming exhibition\, Helen Tindel approaches painting as an act of surrender rather than control. Rooted in lineage and a deep connection to place\, her work unfolds intuitively\, unplanned\, unforced\, and guided by an internal knowing rather than external expectation. Each piece emerges as part of a continuous\, living practice\, where color\, form\, and movement arise organically. Tindel does not seek to direct interpretation; instead\, she releases the work into the world\, allowing each viewer to bring their own meaning to what is felt\, seen\, and experienced.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: A Weekend with Maia Chavez Larkin
DESCRIPTION:Fresh of being chosen for the cover for Western Art Collector’s May issue\, Manitou Galleries in Santa Fe is set to host a weekend with Maia Chavez-larkin. Maia grew up in a family of artists. Her father\, Edward Chavez\, started his career creating murals in public spaces across the West through the WPA initiative. His works exist in the collections of the Whitney\, MoMa\, The Hirshorn and the Library of Congress. Maia’s mother is Eva van Rijn\, an award-winning conservation artist who was for many years the president of the Board of Directors at the Woodstock School of Art. Her wildlife and landscape paintings are in the collections of six art museums. \nMaia has student architectural illustration at the New York School of Interior Design as well as painting and drawing with II Chiostro in Vagliagli\, Italy and the Woodstock School of Art in Woodstock\, NY. SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Kat Kinnick: Flowering Animals
DESCRIPTION:“Paying attention to what’s outside\, beyond walls\, fences and myths of the modern world\, my painting process inspires me to become more aware\, attuned and present\,” says painter\, illustrator\, printmaker and ceramicist Kat Kinnick. “My art creates a world where animals are reflections of our inner landscape and intimate friends. Nature offers solitude and quiet; a place where you can reset and ground and the loudness and chaos of the world quiets.” \nIllustrating wildlife and the wilderness of the high desert of New Mexico\, Kinnick works to inspire a culture of connectedness to nature. Drawing on the magic and inexplicable qualities of childhood\, her work celebrates the region’s unique ecology and abundant diversity. “Kat’s work uses animals and nature as metaphors for the human world\, deeply connected to the environment and other species\,” says Hecho a Mano’s owner\, Frank Rose. “Through beauty and cuteness\, predation and vulnerability\, her paintings are not representations of animals as much as they are a mirror to ourselves. They have the ability to disarm the viewer and if one is open enough\, recognize their own nature.” \nThe concept for her forthcoming solo exhibition\, Flowering Animals\, grew organically from an artist residency Kinnick attended in Oaxaca\, Mexico. “The most striking thing about Oaxaca is how warm and kind the people are\,” the artist says. “There’s a colorful vitality to the city that’s steeped in reciprocity\, craftsmanship\, culture\, food and art. I wanted to bring this sensation of life into this body of work.” \nOpening Friday May 1\, 5–7pm\nArtist Talk Sunday May 3\, 12–1:30

SUMMARY:Workshop: Blend Poetry and Collage with Us
DESCRIPTION:In this three-hour workshop\, artist Deco will guide you to incorporate poetry to deepen one of the most basic art forms—collage. Let’s explore what scraps of paper cut from discarded magazines and catalogs can show us\, by incorporating poetry into our collages—to discover meanings hidden within our materials\, within our perspectives\, and within ourselves. Participants are invited to bring a favorite poem\, whether their own\, a beloved classic\, or a new favorite: some words that move you. As we work\, we will let the words shape the images and let the images imbue the words with new meanings. \nDeco is an award-winning collagist with decades of collage experience. She lived in Chicago most of her life and moved to Santa Fe in 2010\, to embrace the warmth and color of the Southwest. She has created still life\, portraits\, landscapes and starscapes in collage. Her work has been displayed in the White House. The State of New Mexico commissioned a collage to honor our state poets; this piece can be seen in the Tewa State Building in Albuquerque. She has embedded the poems and prose of Stevie Smith\, Shakespeare\, James Joyce and Abraham Lincoln into some of her collages. www.deco-collage.com

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: In The Eyes by Taylor Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Sourced from her grandmothers’ photo archives and the archive of Film & Television media\, Taylor Thomas questions the influence of external representational systems on the Black family. In her paintings\, Thomas paints the skin of her subjects with chrome paint\, a nod to television static and the ambiguous nature of knowing an “other”. Thomas’ collages explore the relationship between skin and body and interiority and exteriority as she abstracts the faces of members of Black Hollywood along with members of her own family into pixelated squares.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Lucid Perturbations: The Sewn Drawings and Books of China Marks Part One
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 24 April 2026 from 5 to 7 p.m. for part one of the opening reception of  Lucid Perturbations: The Sewn Drawings and Books of China Marks\, an exhibition of over 200 sewn tableaux by China Marks.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Patrick Kikut: Works on Paper
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception\, Patrick Kikut: Works on Paper \nFriday\, April 24th\, 2026 from 5-7PM\nExhibition runs through May 23. \nPatrick Kikut has spent thirty-five years traversing the landscapes of the American West\, an “artistic neighborhood” originally claimed in Boulder\, CO\, in 1987 when he declared himself an artist. His work grows from direct encounters with the land\, bearing witness to its quiet beauty and its fragility as cycles of development and return leave their marks \nImage: Patrick Kikut\, “Long Walk to Lone Rock”\, 2022\, oil on paper\, 8 x 12 in.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Mosaics with Kristin Javier
DESCRIPTION:Kristin Javier will have an Artist Talk on Friday\, April 17th\, 2026\, 2pm about her new exhibition Mosaics: Into the Light. Snacks and beverages will be served. \nKristin’s Statement: \n“I speak in dialects of brokenness and light. Mosaic becomes a metaphor for restoration.\nMy practice is a dialogue between the visions in my mind\, the hammer\, and the stone.\nMy process is deeply rooted in ancient methods.\nI ask each tessera to break using only hand tools\, cutting each piece with a carbide tipped hammer and a pitched anvil called a hardie.\nI place each fragment directly into thinset tinted with earth oxides. I allow each shard to stand as its own sculpture\, possessing the power to reflect\, refract\, or absorb light.\nInitially self-taught using broken ceramic shards\, I eventually sought the rigor of Classical training at Studio Arte del Mosaico in Ravenna Italy and The Chicago Mosaic School.\nMy work is an exploration of the mystical\, and a manifestation of the resilience of the human spirit.\nEvery Mosaic created over the past six years represents a step in my healing journey toward the light.”

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Leah Hardy & Mark Ritchie\, No Man's Land Gallery Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:April 18–May 10\, 2026 \n4870 Agua Fria Street\, Santa Fe\, NM 87507 \nOpening Reception: April 18\, 2:00 PM–6:00 PM\, with music by DJ Pablo 77\nGallery Hours: Flexible Schedule\, call or text Patrick Kikut for appointment\n307-399-5665 \nNo Man’s Land Gallery is pleased to present works by Leah Hardy & Mark Ritchie.\nHardy’s current works are narrative and contemplative in nature\, employing insect-inspired forms which become metaphors for the present human condition. These stories illustrate personal inquiry into social behavior\, ethics\, politics\, and most recently climate concern. Fragmented\, altered with mechanical elements or re-contextualized\, these life forms reference our fascination with mortality and desire with the underlying yearning to connect\, communicate\, and gain insight. These works offer a simple starting point for conversation about our humanity and how to work together to affect change on a local\, national\, and universal level…all beginning with a shared sense of curiosity and wonder. \nRitchie’s most recent works are in drawing\, printmaking\, and artists books. An exploration of wild and domestic plants and animals and a consideration of their position\, and his own\, in Western North America as native\, domestic\, or “naturalized invasive” informs Ritchie’s works. Images are initiated in the field and developed in the studio.
