DESCRIPTION:Institute of Contemporary Art Santa Fe presents Memories of the Past That Hug Me in a Nest\, a solo exhibition by Tiago Almeida\, on view June 14 through July 26\, 2026. \nA documentary filmmaker\, artist\, activist\, and initiate of Candomblé\, an Afro-Brazilian spiritual tradition\, Tiago Almeida’s work traces enduring African traditions in Brazil\, exploring Black sovereignty and the historical continuities that shape the present. \nIn Memories of the Past That Hug Me in a Nest\, Almeida brings together installation\, photography\, and documentary film to engage the intertwined histories of the coffee plantations of the Vale do Café and the forced displacement and labor of enslaved Africans. The exhibition examines how Candomblé has carried African cosmologies forward through community\, ceremony\, and systems of knowledge\, while tracing the ongoing suppression of African-matrix practices. \nRather than approaching these histories as fixed or resolved\, Almeida considers how spiritual and ancestral frameworks fold time\, keeping past and present in active relation. His work examines how knowledge persists under conditions of erasure\, moving through forms that are at once visible and withheld. \nOngoing public engagement extends these inquiries through workshops and gatherings led by Almeida and conversations with invited guests\, including activations of the installation (feeding the exhibition) and a workshop titled Against the Chaos. The installation moves between the formal conditions of ritual and art. Visitors are invited to stand at a threshold to witness and learn\, while remaining aware of the limits of their own access.

DESCRIPTION:Wild Hearts Gallery in Placitas invites the public to a reception on June 13\, 1-3 to pm meet Painter\, Joan Fenicle and talk about her show: In the Spirit of Haiku\, Exhibit runs from June 2-28. \nThe haiku in this exhibit are created in oil paint not words. Inspired by Joan’s decades of wandering the caminos and callejones of New Mexico and Colorado\, they are expressions of memorable personal experiences. \nJoan grew up a free-range child in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado where her mother and grandmother had been born in the high mountain mining camps. She has called New Mexico home since the 1970s. She loves wandering back roads\, capturing villages and vistas in pixels and paint – always looking for the stories. An ancient tree\, a village chapel\, an old truck\, abandoned buildings or just a dramatic cloud formation catch her eye and become part of the image collection that holds negatives\, slides and digital images. Bits and pieces of various images may end up in the final painting. \n“A haiku is created from two ingredients: an experience and the expression of that experience in words after it has passed through the poet’s heart.” (from Haiku: A Poet’s Guide by Lee Gurga.) \nThe First Sunday ARTScrawl on June 7 will include a meet the artist segment 11 am to 1 pm as Joan shares some of the stories behind these paintings\, both discoveries and favorite places that have been revisited many times. \nWild Hearts Gallery is an artists’ collective\, supported by 14 local artists. SUMMARY:Opening Reception: 2666 Project
DESCRIPTION:The 2666 Project is a series of paintings made directly onto the pages of a physical paperback copy of Roberto Bolaño’s novel 2666. The book\, unfinished at the time of the author’s death\, is sprawling\, fragmented\, and deeply haunting. It moves through overlapping narratives of violence\, obsession\, academia\, and art\, which\, for me\, left behind a powerful sense of foreboding—hinting at something deeply troubling within our global economic policies and its impact on marginalized cultures. \nI have painted over every odd-numbered page\, for a total of 457 pages/paintings. My intention was not to create “illustrations” that directly match the narrative\, but to make work based on the impressions and emotional imprint the book left me with. By painting on every odd-numbered page of the book\, transforming the physical copy of the book into a continuous sequence and complete visual object. \nThe goal isn’t to explain or interpret 2666\, but to remain with the feeling it left behind. My intent is to create a standalone work layered onto a preexisting one—a transformation of a mass-produced object into something that stands on its own.

DESCRIPTION:In the spirit of Haiku\, Joan Fenicle creates oil paintings that capture the poetic experiences of the New Mexican landscape. Inspired by decades of exploring the caminos and callejones of New Mexico and Colorado\, these paintings capture the journal entries of her wanderings. \nJoan grew up a free-range child in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado where her mother and grandmother had been born in the high mountain mining camps. She has called New Mexico home since the 1970s. She loves wandering back roads\, capturing villages and vistas in pixels and paint – always looking for the stories. An ancient tree\, a village chapel\, an old truck\, abandoned buildings or just a dramatic cloud formation catch her eye and become part of the image collection that holds negatives\, slides and digital images. Bits and pieces of various images may end up in the final painting. \nThe First Sunday ARTScrawl on June 7 from 10 am to 2 pm will include a meet the artist segment as Joan shares the stories behind her images. DESCRIPTION:The first workshop at Horizon (i am within a vast structure in my dreams) at Alpaca Gallery\, curated by Mallika Singh. \n// \nJoin alma valdez-garcia and imogen smith for an afternoon of group reading\, writing\, and weaving on Saturday\, June 6 from 2-4pm. \nTaking a selection of poems from Etel Adnan\, Jimmy Santiago Baca\, Mei-Mei Berssenbrugge\, CAConrad\, Dolores Dorante\, June Jordan\, NH Pritchard\, Daisy Zamora as found materials\, alongside our own writing & items foraged along the Rio Grande\, each person will leave with both a new weaving and poem\, made on a loom with materials foraged along the Rio Grande. \nIn cutting up and rearranging words from other thinkers (alongside our own)\, our hope is that the process will offer up new possibilities of speaking towards our collective histories\, dreams\, and often overlapping forms of witnessing. \nBring along items to add to your weaving (fabric\, plants\, poems\, receipts\, etc.) \nSome willingness required. \n// \nSign up here \n$20\, no one turned away. Together\, they will explore the lasting influence of Indian activism and its impact on contemporary Native art\, politics\, and culture\, and examine how artistic practice\, scholarship\, and advocacy remain essential tools for resistance\, renewal\, and self-determination. Smith’s book Like a Hurricane: The Indian Movement from Alcatraz to Wounded Knee (1996\, with Robert Warrior)\, remains one of the most singular texts on the formative era of Native activism in the United States.

DESCRIPTION:Erica Lord presents Artifact Piece\, Revisited\, an interpretation of James Luna’s influential performance Artifact Piece (1987). The work prompts critical reflection on the objectification and fetishization of Indigenous bodies and cultures in museums and the art world at large\, while foregrounding contemporary and gendered perspectives. \nThis presentation is the first performance of the work since Luna’s passing in 2018. It honors his significant impact on Indigenous performance art and continues the dialogue he began on representation\, sovereignty\, and self-determination.
