Held in conjunction with the exhibition Traces: Known and Un-Known with new work by Christy Hengst\, the reading takes place in the gallery El Zaguan\, home of the Historic Santa Fe Foundation. \nAn intimate reading by award-winning poet\, author\, and Zen teacher Henry Shukman. The Spiritual Director Emeritus of Mountain Cloud Zen Center in Santa Fe\, Shukman has published several books and his poetry has appeared\, among other places\, in The New Yorker\, The Guardian\, and London Review of Books. His deep experience in Zen meditation provides a natural thematic bridge to Hengst’s meditative approach to artmaking (henryshukman.com). Advance registration is suggested to guarantee seating.

She often collaborates with her husband artist and musician Terry Allen\, both appearing in Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-nominated film Killers of the Flower Moon. \nHer photographs\, video installations\, and acclaimed one-woman shows have been performed and exhibited throughout the US and abroad. Disney Performing Arts Center at the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, 1701 4th St. SW Albuquerque\, NM 87120 \nAbout the artist: Joe Ramiro Garcia is an Art Institute of Chicago–educated artist who moved to Santa Fe from his native Houston in 1987. In his paintings\, he creates an image or pattern on paper that’s soaked in gum arabic and water\, next the paper plate is charged with oil paint and then hand pressed onto a painting surface. It’s a transfer method similar to those used by Jasper Johns\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Andy Warhol\, and Nancy Spero—but also vastly different\, because Garcia doesn’t silkscreen\, monoprint\, or etch. The end results are oil paintings that Garcia calls “open narratives” due to layered imagery. Garcia\, who is represented by Blue Gallery in Kansas City\, has recently had several solo exhibitions at Santa Fe’s LewAllen Galleries.

Disney Performing Arts Center in the National Hispanic Cultural Center // 1701 4th St SW Albuquerque\, NM 87102 \nAbout the artist: Esteban Ismael Durán\, a self-taught artist\, was born in 1955 and grew up in Albuquerque’s historic Old Town. His roots in that traditional community have always been important to him and helped him to shape his work. As a young man\, he began his formal studies with artist Frank McCulloch. In 1993 he started incorporating traditional New Mexican tinwork into his paintings\, studying this discipline with tinsmith Ted Arellanes. Esteban’s local work has included public art for the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. He\, along with his cousin PAZ\, had the lead role in the 1995 creation of a series of tile murals along Fourth Street in Barelas\, mentoring local youth to help design the murals based on Barelas’ history. Esteban began to work with recycled materials as he ventured into combining traditional tinwork with more contemporary media. For the past ten years\, he has built the unique ability to blend contemporary and traditional media/design and the use of recycled materials.

DESCRIPTION:Smithsonian\nNew work by Hills Snyder\ncactusBARN March 5 – May 7\, 2027\nReception: Friday\, March 5\, 5 to 8 PM\n613 Mission St.\, San Antonio\, TX 78210 \nTwo flags installed in close proximity\, indicative of their twin legacies of insurrection; that of the January 6\, 2021\, Christian Nationalist attack on the US Capitol; and that of the American Slave Holders Rebellion of the 1860s\, more popularly known as the Civil War. \nOne\, the flag of the United States\, with a forty-three-word text embroidered in the red stripes. \nThe other\, the flag of the Confederate States\, repeatedly boiled in calcium hydrosulfite and exposed to sunlight over a four-year period. \nBoth flags are framed as if presented in a museum of American history. \nOther works will occupy the space\, adding detail and fire.

SUMMARY:The Santa Fe Symphony: Beethoven & Korngold
DESCRIPTION:Ben Beilman\, one of the leading violinists of his generation\, makes his Santa Fe Symphony debut with Korngold’s Violin Concerto. Famous for his film scores of the 1930s and 40s\, Korngold composed his Violin Concerto with the same sophistication and romanticism he brought to Hollywood. The concert opens with Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony. The master composer takes listeners on a pleasant stroll through the sunny countryside with birds singing above. Closing the program is Dvorak’s Carnival Overture\, an entertaining kaleidoscope of themes and colors portraying a celebration of life that will feature members of The Santa Fe Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Joining him is his longtime friend\, renowned violinist Ida Kavafian\, for Mozart’s grand Sinfonia Concertante. You’ll marvel at the interplay of melodies between these two musicians. Next\, Ida and The Symphony perform the regional premiere of Richard Danielpour’s Fiat Lux. Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances closes the program. One of the composer’s last works\, the piece features an optimistic personality with rhythmic drive and energy.
