SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Baseman and Mills | Selected Works at Studio light | space
DESCRIPTION:Studio light | space presents selected works by Marc Baseman and Wes Mills\, artists whose practices have developed in conversation since their arrival in Taos in 1991. Both have sustained careers of considerable scope. This exhibition focuses on the particular intensity of their drawing practice. \nBaseman’s compositions\, many measuring just over three inches on each side\, achieve their power through precision of means. Working at miniature scale\, he manipulates negative space and layered horizons to create depth that rewards sustained attention. Mills brings parallel rigor to his investigations of geometric abstraction\, balancing systematic structure with the warmth of individual mark-making.\nBoth artists have chosen concentration over expansion\, intimacy over dominance. For each\, drawing functions as a method of inquiry. Constraint generates meaning. Reduction clarifies form. \nThe drawings gathered here are products of time. Decades of looking and making cohere in works that demand careful consideration. In an era that privileges speed and scale\, these works offer an alternative: evidence of what happens when artists commit fully to the surface before them with rigor and care.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: It's all pipes
DESCRIPTION:It’s the end. I didn’t want to know. The pipes are calling. I’m not looking. \nBesides calling\, they’re getting dressed\, they’re making choices\, they’re making decisions and it’s based on something. They’re being watched and they don’t know. They’re looking at something and does this fit? The manual is here and they’re behaving.\nThere’s a story inside a story. The illusion of control. The slice of pie I selected\, the crumbs on the floor. \nBelieve me as pipes. They only exist if you see them. \nTaylor Engel (b. NY\, USA) is an interdisciplinary artist working in performance\, sculpture and installation. Her work has been featured in Southwest Contemporary’s Vol. 12 Obsession and has shown throughout various spaces in Albuquerque\, NM such as the Immanuel Presbyterian Fellowship Hall\, 1415\, Spectra Gallery\, Desert Mystery Center and a number of open spaces and stages throughout the city. She co-runs a monthly experimental presentation series called Presentation Series and participated in Cura and Michele Rizzo’s workshop Coalescing Towards(Rome\, 2025). They received an MFA in Sculpture from The University of New Mexico and a BFA in Graphic Design from Pratt Institute. \nRachel Bordeleau (b. WI\, USA) is an interdisciplinary artist and educator making work about place. Her current practice is rooted in Albuquerque\, New Mexico\, where she works with plants\, archives\, found objects\, image\, and projection to make sculptures and installations. Her practice is research-based and grows from lived experience\, offering stories about life and death cycles\, indeterminacy\, and change. She co-runs the monthly experimental presentation series\, Presentation Series\, and is a member of the SeedBroadcast artist collective. She holds an MFA in Art & Ecology from the University of New Mexico and a BS in Textiles and Fashion Design from the University of Wisconsin – Madison

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Swoon: Into the Forest Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition opening: May 15–6pm. \nExhibition open May 15–July 10\, 2026. \nFor the last few years\, Swoon has been working on her most intimate story and set of characters yet: Sibylant Sisters. This autobiographical\, multidimensional artwork is immersive and vulnerable\, and portrays a magical story set in her childhood through drawing\, painting\, an oracle deck\, and a stop motion film. The artist presents her story so that others can find healing the way she did\, over years of “making the subconscious conscious” by exploring her parents’ opioid addictions through magical realism. Artwork from Sibylant Sisters will be the focus of Into the Forest. Her oracle deck will be debuted at the opening\, where Swoon will be giving readings.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Lucid Perturbations: The Sewn Drawings and Books of China Marks Part Two
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 15 May 2026 from 5 to 7 p.m. for part two of the opening reception of Lucid Perturbations: The Sewn Drawings and Books of China Marks\, an exhibition of over 200 sewn tableaux by China Marks. Featuring a total of 147 yards of fabric\, a length nearly one and a half times the height of the Statue of Liberty\, this monographic exhibition is installed in the gallery’s 5\,000 square feet of exhibition space\, weaving a tapestry that records a quarter century of an unsung artist’s singular vision and consuming passion for drawing with the sewn line. \nAlthough once lauded by The New York Times arts writer Grace Glueck for the bravura of her avant-garde sewn work\, Marks has remained largely under the radar. Lucid Perturbations presents to the public\, for the first time\, the broadest survey of the psychological nooks and crevices of Marks’s sewn multiverse in all of its dark humor\, aporia\, and wit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Bound by the High Desert: Contemporary Fiber Art
DESCRIPTION:Historic Santa Fe Foundation (HSFF) presents Bound by the High Desert: Contemporary Fiber Art\, opening May 15\, 2026\, at El Zaguán. The exhibition features New Mexico-based artists who transform local materials and time-honored wisdom into modern forms. These artists employ enduring hand-craft traditions\, ensuring that regional fiber arts remain a vibrant\, living practice today. \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION \nThe works in Bound by the High Desert represent a diversity of makers who utilize traditional techniques. While the artworks in this exhibition are contemporary\, they serve as echoes of the past\, drawing on heritage crafts born of utilitarian necessity. Today\, these artists find new freedom to explore fiber as a medium for fine art\, looking back at material and process while also looking forward. \nBy showcasing these tactile\, handmade works against the 1854 handmade adobe walls of the El Zaguán compound\, Historic Santa Fe Foundation celebrates the evolution of these traditions. This exhibition is a testament to how preservation and artistic creation work together to keep our shared cultural heritage alive. \nFeatured Artists: \nNancy Kozikowsk\nPando Speer and Dain Daller (The Warp Zone)\nBenita Ortega-Rael\nAndrea Dupree \nRead more here https://www.historicsantafe.org/fiberart \nContact: Anne Kelly at anne@historicsantafe.org or call 505.983.2567 for more information.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: No Longer\, Not Yet | Marisol Valencia
DESCRIPTION:Art League Houston is pleased to present “No Longer\, Not Yet\,” an installation of new sculptures by Houston-based artist Marisol Valencia. The exhibition arises from a year and a half of sustained volunteer work at a Houston-area shelter serving migrant women and children\, and is grounded in lived experience\, shared making\, and acts of care. \nAs news cycles around immigration continue to speed up and flatten into headlines\, Valencia resists the pressure to resolve or frame the subject through policy or argument. Instead\, she lingers with lived experience and what it means to move through uncertainty\, and the slower\, quieter realities of endurance\, adaptation\, and care that rarely make it into public discourse.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Subject to Surviving | Juvana Soliven
DESCRIPTION:Art League Houston is pleased to present “Subject to Surviving\,” the Texas debut solo exhibition of Honolulu-based artist Juvana Soliven. This installation presents a years-long exploration of work that utilizes a pixelated censor motif as a visual language\, which speaks to themes of bodily autonomy\, gender performance\, and survival. \nSoliven’s work has been guided by Audre Lorde’s “The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House”\, as well as Terri Kapsalis’ “Mastering the Female Pelvis: Race and Tools of Reproduction”\, an essay which articulates the horror of gynecological practices suffered by enslaved Black women\, the mass sterilization by the US of women and girls in Puerto Rico\, the forced sterilization of incarcerated women\, and coercive and “incentivized” contraceptive trials placed on poor women of color around the world by US and European governments. These are systems of control exercised against women under the guise of societal improvement and medical advancement that would contribute to the fulfillment of our duties in society.

He purchased land in the forest off Tunnel Springs Road where he continues to live in a domed house—just seven hundred square feet of living space plus a two-hundred-foot loft for sleeping – tiled in mosaic with animal sculptures at every turn. One can’t help but marvel at his talent for remaining positive in an uncertain world – all while having the last laugh. \n“Someone asked\, ‘What would you call this art?’ And I thought about that. SUMMARY:Curator Talk: Lucid Perturbations: The Sewn Drawings and Books of China Marks
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 16\, 2026\, from 2–3 p.m. for a curator talk about Lucid Perturbations and the sewn works of China Marks\, featuring gallery director Carina Evangelista and longtime friend of China Marks\, Pamela Matsuda-Dunn\, also an artist. Evangelista and Matsuda-Dunn will lead us through Marks’s unorthodox sewn multiverse of allegory\, dark humor\, and wit\, offering insights into what possessed Marks to produce\, with singular focus\, over 600 sewn tableaux in the last twenty-three years of her art practice. \nEvangelista and Matsuda-Dunn will also share how Lucid Perturbations came to be; the artists’ cache of references for the largely allegorical works; and the process behind the artist’s sewn oeuvre. A rare opportunity to gain insight into the world of an unsung artist’s life and practice\, this conversation accompanies China Marks’s largest solo exhibition.

SUMMARY:Reception & Artist Talk: Echoes of Care: Vessels of the Future
DESCRIPTION:What will remain of care\, labor\, and memory in one-hundred years? Echoes of Care: Vessels of the Future envisions a speculative archive where acts of nurturing\, witnessing\, and transformation persist beyond a century. This exhibition builds upon my interdisciplinary practice in printmaking\, digital media\, and community-engaged art to examine how personal and collective histories are carried forward—through objects\, ritual\, and the evolving role of women as vessels of survival and connection. The works presented are a synthesis of print-based installation\, textile works\, and experimental digital media\, creating a bridge between past and future. In this imagined future\, what we make and leave behind—both tangible and intangible—holds the imprint of care. Through layered prints on fabric\, interactive digital pieces\, and a participatory community element\, this exhibition explores themes of sustenance\, resilience\, and remembrance as they shape a future landscape.

SUMMARY:Performance: The Wild Bloom: Spring Performance Series—Night 1
DESCRIPTION:The Wild Bloom is an immersive\, three-night event series that transforms Union Hall’s gallery into a dynamic stage for interdisciplinary\, boundary-pushing work. \nOn any given night you might discover a performance blending movement with poetry\, an interactive improv group\, or an unexpected\, comedic guided meditation. By inviting audiences into participatory\, socially engaged performances\, The Wild Bloom deepens connection to the arts in a space designed for creative experimentation and cultural dialogue. \nPurchase tickets for a single evening or upgrade to ticket packages for bigger savings! \nNight 1 Lineup—May 16 (in no order)\nKevin Hoth—Corporate Corpus Body Scan Meditation: Kevin Hoth will guide participants through a present-focused body scan meditation. Attention will move methodically from the toes to the crown (which may require some deep cleaning). Along the way\, subtle obstructions—those that interfere with one’s capacity to function smoothly within established consumerist systems—may be observed and released. \nElle Hong & Josh Ware—10SHINS // LIMBSCAPE: A contact improvisation for two bodies that affirms/dissolves a subject’s boundaries\, both through riding/interrupting momentum and sensing self through contact with another. \nKenzie Sitterud—Post-it Note from Patriot: Kenzie will perform a patriotic flag-retiring ceremony\, drawing on their research of the Flag Code\, while engaging the audience with a syncopated Pledge of Allegiance and a National Anthem soundtrack. The performance will be a hyper-patriotic ceremony as commentary on who and what is defined by patriotism held in accordance with the flag code. \nThe Wild Bloom is generously supported by Meow Wolf Denver. Food and beverages are provided by Ratio Beerworks and Whole Foods Market. \nImage credit: Elle Hong and Josh Ware\, photo by From the Hip Photo.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Mindful Making: Creating Wet-Felted Vessels
DESCRIPTION:The Historic Santa Fe Foundation is excited to present a one-day Wet-Felting workshop with Andrea Dupree. \nMindful Making: Creating Wet-Felted Vessels \nSaturday\, May 23\, 2026\, 1–4pm \n$125 (includes materials) \nJoin artist and educator Andrea Dupree for a hands-on wet felting workshop that blends fiber art techniques with mindfulness practices and creative exploration. Participants will learn to make wool vessels using water\, natural soap and wool. Wet felting is an ancient fiber art technique that transforms loose fibers\, such as wool\, into a dense\, durable\, non-woven fabric. \nThe class begins with a short grounding practice to help participants attune to breath\, body\, and materials. Throughout the session\, Andrea will guide you through the wet-felting process to create hollow vessels. We’ll explore the rich sensory elements of these materials and engage in a slow\, thoughtful process that honors the meditative nature of felting. \nNo prior experience is needed\, and all materials are provided. Come ready to work with your hands and leave with a one-of-a-kind felted vessel and a deeper connection to fiber and form. \nBio: \nAndrea Dupree is an eco-artist and educator based in the Pojoaque Valley. Her fiber-based artwork explores themes of interconnectedness and ecological attunement\, primarily using hand felting\, embroidery\, found\, and natural materials. With a background in Studio Arts (BFA) and Reggio-inspired Early Childhood Education (MA)\, Andrea is also a Registered Yoga Teacher who brings over 20 years of experience teaching art\, mindfulness\, and movement. Learn more about her work here: bluebird-art.com or instagram @andreadupree \nThe workshop will be held at El Zaguán\, located at 545 Canyon Road\, Santa Fe\, NM 87501. SUMMARY:Concert: El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego
DESCRIPTION:On May 30\, the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live transmission of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera\, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera\, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth\, the story depicts Frida\, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard\, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego\, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. \nThe famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love\, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met-premiere staging of Frank’s opera\, a “confident\, richly imagined score” (New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times). The vibrant new production\, taking enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Diego’s paintings\, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker. \nLocal support for the Met: Live in HD series is provided by The Edward Hastings and Gino Barcone Trust.
