SUMMARY:Opening: Wearing\, Wearing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of Wearing\, Wearing\, guest curated by Felicity Wong – the second of three exhibitions in Union Hall’s 2026 Rough Gems series! \nThe curator and many exhibiting artists will be in attendance. Light refreshments will be provided by Ratio Beerworks. Union Hall is a nonprofit art space and welcomes donations. \nCurated by Felicity Wong\, Wearing\, Wearing features six artists who employ strategies of abstraction\, repurposing\, amalgamation\, and deconstruction to investigate the relationships between clothing and decay. Embedded in histories of racial and colonial capitalism\, the garment industry has not only laid waste to our environments\, but also rendered garment laborers invisible\, dispensable\, and machine-like. Moving away from aspirations towards luxury fashion\, this exhibition asks how mundane\, cheap\, and dying garments can contribute to but also help us navigate landscapes of decay. Artists include Sarah Darlene\, Flora Wilds\, Allison Sheldon\, Allegra Giddings\, Elle Hong\, and Paloma Jimenez. \nThe exhibition will be on view through August 8\, 2026 with open gallery hours Wednesday – Saturday from 12 – 6 pm. Learn more at unionhalldenver.org/rough-gems-wearingwearing. \nCover image: Allison Sheldon\, steeped in calm\, 2019\, silk organza\, chamomile\, thread\, 3 ft. x 3 ft. Photo by Brian Hawkins.

SUMMARY:Opening: Broom Room Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, every culture has gathered fiber together and swept. Brooms\, brushes\, and sweeping are an intimate part of our collective domestic history\, and Julia Tait Dickenson proudly creates her pieces as an extension of that time-honored tradition. \nHer work showcases pieces that are both recognizable in their original form and strikingly transformed into something entirely new. Julia delights in finding discarded objects and discovering innovative ways to create brooms and brushes\, seamlessly incorporating traditional processes with found objects that have been used and feel good in the hand. \nThis exhibition highlights her recent experimentation with abstract ideas\, challenging both her own creativity and traditional confines to create new\, unexpected broom structures. Through this process\, she beautifully captures and preserves the feeling of an object’s original use while breathing new life into it. \nJulia lived in Santa Fe in the late 1980s and ’90s\, making her living as a jeweler\, before returning from Vermont in 2021 as a fiber artist and broom maker under her studio name\, Thinair Goods. We were honored to have Julia as an artist-in-residence here at El Zaguán until 2025. Currently\, her studio is located in the historic downtown Santa Fe area\, where she warmly welcomes visitors. \nThin Air Goods brings beauty and soul into objects intended for everyday use. \nContact: Anne Kelly at anne@historicsantafe.org or call 505.983.2567 for more information.

SUMMARY:Opening: Thirty Years: The Legacy of John Cleary Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Couturier Gallery is delighted to present Thirty Years: The Legacy of John Cleary Gallery. 2026 marks the thirtieth year of the gallery’s existence\, having opened in the same space on Gallery Row in 1996 as John Cleary Gallery. The history of the gallery is a complicated one with less-than-regular milestones\, but this celebration of the life and legacy of John Cleary brings us back to the very beginning. \nAfter taking a class on collecting photography taught by Houston-legends Anne Tucker and Geoff Winningham at Rice University in the late 1970s\, John Cleary purchased his first photograph: Robert Doisneau’s Le Manège de Monsieur Barré (Mr. Barré’s Carousel)\, 1955 (as mentioned in the Houston Chronicle’s article on John’s life\, published January 30\, 2008). Details of the inaugural exhibition in the gallery are somewhat unclear—John once said it was a Doisneau show\, while one long-time collector remembers it as a French street photography show\, and another recalls that it simply featured famous photographers. Although the specifics may be lost to history and the fallibility of memory\, we are pleased to present an homage to this exhibition which will feature French photographers and more\, including John’s first Doisneau and the exact André Kertész print which was sold at that first show in 1996. \nThe gallery welcomed Catherine Couturier as Gallery Manager in 1999\, who would go on to buy the gallery after the sudden passing of John in 2008. 4 years later\, the gallery’s name was updated as well. Although Catherine has now owned the gallery longer than he ever did\, John played an unmistakably important role in both her life and in Houston’s photography scene\, having founded what is now Houston’s longest running fine art photography gallery.

SUMMARY:Richard Potter: Permutations
DESCRIPTION:Globe Fine Art is delighted to showcase new encaustic works of painter Richard Potter. A Santa Fe native currently living in Tucson\, Potter captures the beauty of moments in time with Permutations. \n“These works are an exploration of lived experience – a morning or afternoon walk\, shifting colors\, sounds\, scents; the rhythms of life. Observation blends with memory and imagination\, allowing direct experience and its recollection to coexist within the same space. We have the experience of living the moment combined with our memory of it. They live side by side in our being. These paintings organize such elements into structures of design where form\, color and field come together to create and recreate a space in time.” \n~ Richard Potter \nOpening: Wednesday July 1\, 5-8pm (During Canyon Road Summer Walk)\nExhibition: July 1 – July 29\nGallery hours: Monday – Saturday 10am – 5pm\, Sunday 11am-5pm

SUMMARY:Zahra Marwan: Is There a Horse on Your Roof?
DESCRIPTION:“I find myself often in disbelief — at how beautiful life can be\, the opportunities that come my way\, at the darkness that ails my family and loved ones\, how I wish politics wouldn’t be so personal\,” says Kuwaiti-born\, Albuquerque-based artist\, author and illustrator Zahra Marwan. \nHer upcoming show negotiates this realm of disbelief. Its title—Is There a Horse on Your Roof?—comes from Maurice Sendak’s debut children’s picture book\, Kenny’s Window\, which tells the story of a young boy’s quest to find the magical garden he dreams about\, helped along the way by his toys in a blend of realism and imagination. To Marwan\, the book is a meditation on loneliness and love in a dream-like world. \nMarwan’s work is at once deeply personal\, populated by the people\, places and memories of her own life\, and universal\, inviting viewers to reflect on moments of beauty and connection in their own lives. It carries a profound sense of reverence for the fleeting instances of love and care that reconnect us with our humanity\, even in the darkest times. \n“What sustains me\, and continued to sustain me during the war (was it a war?) are loving relations\,” Marwan says. “The quiet moments with people. People whose hearts are in the right place. And the ocean of patience I maintain with social decorum living in a place actively inflicting harm on my home\, while unable to live in the place my family always belonged. Navigating grim politics between one nation to another\, I acclimate to beauty among the grief.”

SUMMARY:Opening: Dry Land
DESCRIPTION:The show is titled Dry Land\, not only as a reference to the nature of the medium itself\, but also to evoke an idea of safety and rest. “When sailors are out at sea they often are in search of dry land\,” Traer says. “I am not a sailor\, but over the past few years there seems to be a general sense that we are in fact lost at sea — and this show\, I am hoping\, provides some respite from that.” \nThe artists Traer has chosen to bring together for the show draw from diverse backgrounds and practices\, but share a sense of whimsy and tongue-in-cheek humor\, executing formidable structural feats in ways that appear effortless. Ceramic artist and architect Janny Baek creates cloudlike\, anthropomorphic structures that share a similar joyful and buoyant color palette as figurative ceramicist Sara Swink’s small-scale stoneware animal figures. Holly Curcio creates both narrative ceramic sculptures and comics\, and Lisa Smith and her works seem to exist in a similar world as ceramic sculptor Monica Van den Dool’s — both with a darker\, yet still whimsical bent. “Their storytelling is found in tones found in the natural world and their work seems to be sprouting from it\,” Traer observes. “The works for the most part are figurative and if they aren’t specifically figurative they are breathing and existing — each piece of work holds a story\, some more complex or obvious than others\, but they all ask to be viewed with the same care and attention.”
