SUMMARY:Opening reception: Lindsay Iliff: Re/membering
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the opening reception for Lindsay Iliff’s solo exhibition\, ‘Re/membering’\nopening reception 6/12 from 5-7PM\nexhibition continues through 7/11 (closed 7/4) \n“Through my work I choose to Re/member: connecting fragments of what has been lost-honoring and drawing strength from our living planet.” – Lindsay Iliff \nLindsay Iliff’s work provides a ground for the artist and the viewer to reclaim our vital kinship with all that lives. The apparent loss of this essential relationship on a cultural level creates deep suffering in the culture(s) that loses sight of this truth. Iliff’s clay sculptures\, informed by the ancient landscape of New Mexico\, and by her attraction to ancient plant species and stupas\, remind us of the gift of our extensive community. \nImage: Lindsay Iliff\, Far Side of the Moon\, 2024\, ceramic\, 12.5 x 17 x10.5 in.

SUMMARY:ARTScrawl: Joan Fenicle: In the Spirit of Haiku
DESCRIPTION:In the spirit of Haiku\, Joan Fenicle creates oil paintings that capture the poetic experiences of the New Mexican landscape. Inspired by decades of exploring the caminos and callejones of New Mexico and Colorado\, these paintings capture the journal entries of her wanderings. \nJoan grew up a free-range child in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado where her mother and grandmother had been born in the high mountain mining camps. She has called New Mexico home since the 1970s. She loves wandering back roads\, capturing villages and vistas in pixels and paint – always looking for the stories. An ancient tree\, a village chapel\, an old truck\, abandoned buildings or just a dramatic cloud formation catch her eye and become part of the image collection that holds negatives\, slides and digital images. Bits and pieces of various images may end up in the final painting. \nThe First Sunday ARTScrawl on June 7 from 10 am to 2 pm will include a meet the artist segment as Joan shares the stories behind her images. And join us for the Artist Reception Saturday\, June 13\, 1-3 pm.

SUMMARY:Curator Talk: Candice Hopkins in Conversation with Paul Chaat Smith
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an inspiring reading and conversation with Paul Chaat Smith\, renowned Comanche author\, essayist\, curator and activist and Candice Hopkins\, curator of Indian Theater: Native Performance\, Art\, and Self-Determination since 1969. Together\, they will explore the lasting influence of Indian activism and its impact on contemporary Native art\, politics\, and culture\, and examine how artistic practice\, scholarship\, and advocacy remain essential tools for resistance\, renewal\, and self-determination. Smith’s book Like a Hurricane: The Indian Movement from Alcatraz to Wounded Knee (1996\, with Robert Warrior)\, remains one of the most singular texts on the formative era of Native activism in the United States.

SUMMARY:Artist Performance: Erica Lord in Artifact Piece\, Revisited
DESCRIPTION:Erica Lord presents Artifact Piece\, Revisited\, an interpretation of James Luna’s influential performance Artifact Piece (1987). The work prompts critical reflection on the objectification and fetishization of Indigenous bodies and cultures in museums and the art world at large\, while foregrounding contemporary and gendered perspectives. \nThis presentation is the first performance of the work since Luna’s passing in 2018. It honors his significant impact on Indigenous performance art and continues the dialogue he began on representation\, sovereignty\, and self-determination.

SUMMARY:Opening: Horizon (i am within a vast structure in my dreams)
DESCRIPTION:HORIZON (i am within a vast structure in my dreams) is a three-part performance\, workshop series\, temporary reading room\, and micro-radio. The series is divided into three themes: \nthread (what is coming is more than what is gone)\nbody (thousands of militants in the streets)\nhome (there are trees in the future) \nHORIZON will feature artists who work in audio-visual poetics including: concrete poetry\, signage\, asemic writing\, collage\, video art\, scores and composition\, sound\, and performance. This series focuses on poets\, performers\, and organizers who treat language as a material infrastructure and the letter as a sculptural element meant to be shaped or sounded out – considering words not only for what they convey\, but also their shape on a page\, wall\, or public space. Each performance will be partnered with a workshop that will employ text as a visual form. \nInspired by mobile and fugitive libraries\, HORIZON will also be a reading room and space of study that will be open to the public on Saturdays and Mondays in July and August. \nFriday June 5th\, 6:30pm at Alpaca\nmasks required and provided at all programming \nFirst Horizon poetry performance featuring: \n~ mónica teresa ortiz (Lubbock\, TX)\n~ Mia Kang (Philadelphia\, PA)\n~ alma valdez garcia (Los Angeles / NM)\n~ imogen smith (Los Angeles\, CA) \nJuly and August programming to be announced.

SUMMARY:2026 Youth Art Exhibition: Sacred Reflections & Pieces of the Whole
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of socially-engaged artwork created by students of our Youth Art Mentoring and EPIC Arts programs\, exploring identity\, agency\, and advocacy. \nThe exhibition themes Sacred Reflections (Youth Art Mentoring students) and Pieces of the Whole (EPIC Arts students) center identity\, voice\, and collective belonging. \nThese themes invite young artists to explore what matters most to them\, individually and together\, while recognizing their power to shape their communities. \nAt a time when many feel pressured to shrink or conceal parts of who they are\, this work insists on the opposite: to know oneself fully and to be seen. \nThrough reflection and creation\, students are encouraged to embrace their identities\, honor their intersections\, and stand rooted in self-awareness. \nThis knowing becomes a form of power; one that fosters pride\, builds connection\, and quietly resists erasure. In doing so\, the exhibition calls us to recognize and appreciate the uniqueness each person brings\, and the many ways we choose to express and represent who we are.

SUMMARY:Opening: New Works by BC Nowlin
DESCRIPTION:For more than two decades\, B.C. Nowlin’s work has been a defining presence at Manitou Galleries. This landmark one-man exhibition opens Friday\, June 5 from 5 to 7 pm and celebrates the enduring relationship between gallery and artist\, and the continuing evolution of one of the Southwest’s most distinctive and visionary painters. \nBorn and raised on land bordering the Sandia Pueblo Reservation\, Nowlin developed a deeply personal visual language shaped by cultural intersection\, spiritual inquiry\, and a fiercely independent path as a self-taught artist. Emerging as a pivotal voice of the “New West\,” his paintings transcend narrative\, offering meditations on journey\, identity\, and transformation. \nNowlin’s unmistakable imagery — solitary travelers\, luminous forms\, and dreamlike landscapes — invites viewers into contemplative worlds that feel both timeless and transcendent. Bold in design yet profoundly introspective\, his work reflects decades of fearless exploration and a singular artistic vision.

SUMMARY:Opening: Annalise Gratovich: Carrying Things From Home
DESCRIPTION:Printmaker Annalise Gratovich’s graphic iconography employs symbols of personal and cultural identity\, signaling togetherness through a scattered Ukrainian diaspora. \nThe figures in her work are totemic beings that explore personal and cultural identity; vessels based on the form of the stacking matryoshka doll. They are adorned in textiles and patterns informed by Indigenous Ukrainian textiles\, embroidery\, and ceremonial dress\, as well as vintage American western wear. “The patterns are used to allude to distant homelands- places that are lost or cannot be returned to\,” Gratovich says. Flora and fauna of the American South and Southwest adorn and surround her figures\, rooting them in place and symbolizing interdependency\, resiliency\, and generational survival. \nHer hand-carved woodcuts take months to complete\, and are then meticulously colored with hand-dyed papers—a process that can take more than a month. She prints these by hand at Flatbed Press in Austin\, Texas with a team of three to four other printers. The process of dyeing and cutting the paper to adorn these prints with color is evocative of traditional arts of Ukraine including the dyed egg (pysanky)\, and slavic papercuts (vytynanky).

SUMMARY:Opening: Alberto Cruz: Wild Company
DESCRIPTION:In his most recent project\, Oaxacan artist Alberto Cruz depicts the connections between childhood and nature through a collection of twenty-one linocuts featuring diverse ecosystems as settings for new visual stories about children and animals. \nThe series is organized in seven thematic groupings\, each corresponding to a distinct ecosystem and composed of three images: safari\, lake\, beach\, North Pole\, forest\, mountain\, and desert. Across these images we see children embarking on adventures alongside birds\, elephants\, hippopotamuses\, polar bears\, dogs\, reptiles\, and other quadrupeds. \nThe creativity of children’s minds has always been a central theme in Cruz’s work. They are the protagonists in this series\, depicted as free\, strong\, dignified\, and meditative human beings\, with animals as allies\, travel guides\, and companions. Cruz typically makes art for people of all ages\, but children are the intended primary audience for this project—a sensibility rooted in his four years teaching art to kindergarten and elementary students in Oaxaca\, an experience he credits with reshaping how he sees the world.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Turning From a Fixed Direction by Lita Kenyon
DESCRIPTION:Lita Kenyon’s work explores abstraction’s ability to evoke balance and tension without relying on narrative. Kenyon avoids specific references\, allowing meaning to emerge organically as images blend and shift within fields of color and gestural marks. Inspiration comes from nonobjective forms as they emerge in the composition. Kenyon’s process is guided by intuition-driven methods\, where each piece begins with a gesture and evolves through scraping\, repainting\, and layering.
