SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Darrah Blackwater Allocations: Self-Determination From Inside the Earth\, Outward
DESCRIPTION:ARTIST RECEPTION FRIDAY\, March 20\, 2026 | 5-7 PM | EXHIBITION IS ON VIEW THROUGH SATURDAY\, April 11\, 2026 AT HSFF’S EL ZAGUÁN\, 545 CANYON ROAD\, SANTA FE\, NEW MEXICO \nAllocations: Self-Determination From Inside the Earth\, Outward is Darrah Blackwater’s first solo show. Focusing on multiple facets of how United States laws and policies have impacted and affected the ability of Indigenous nations and Indigenous people to determine their lives and their futures\, this show focuses on the concept of spectrum sovereignty\, or the use and control of radio waves on tribal lands. \nThis issue epitomizes the importance of self-determination for Indigenous nations in the modern era\, as wireless communications affect the everyday lives of Americans\, including Indigenous people living on reservations. Similarly\, the Dawes Act\, the Indian Child Welfare Act and the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives are examples of how\, over centuries\, the United States has attempted or failed to acknowledge or protect the rights of Indigenous peoples through “allocations” of land\, children\, and respect. \nAllocations: From Inside the Earth Outward challenges the scarcity reality that colonization has imposed on Indigenous communities by examining the concept of different allocations of rights and resources the United States has made to Tribes and Indigenous people. Further\, this show raises the questions of who has the right to make these allocations to Indigenous nations\, and whether an allocation is. \nDarrah Blackwater is an artist and attorney\, originally from Farmington\, New Mexico. She is a citizen of the Navajo Nation\, and focuses much of her work on advocating for the rights of Indigenous people\, with an emphasis on Indigenous spectrum sovereignty\, or the right for Indigenous people to own and control radio waves on tribal lands. \nContact: Anne Kelly at anne@historicsantafe.org or call 505.983.2567 for more information.

SUMMARY:Performance: Tristan und Isolde
DESCRIPTION:After years of anticipation\, a truly unmissable event arrives in cinemas worldwide on March 21 as the electrifying Lise Davidsen tackles one of the ultimate roles for dramatic soprano: the Irish princess Isolde in Wagner’s transcendent meditation on love and death. Heroic tenor Michael Spyres stars opposite Davidsen as the love-drunk Tristan. \nThe momentous occasion also marks the advent of a new\, Met-debut staging by Yuval Sharon—hailed by the New York Times as “the most visionary opera director of his generation” and the first American to direct an opera at the famed Wagner festival in Bayreuth—as well as Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s first time leading Tristan und Isolde at the Met. Mezzosoprano Ekaterina Gubanova reprises her portrayal of Brangäne\, alongside bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny\, who sings Kurwenal after celebrated Met appearances in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer and Ring cycle. Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green makes an important role debut as King Marke. \nLocal support for the Met: Live in HD series is provided by The Edward Hastings and Gino Barcone Trust.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Dead Letter Office
DESCRIPTION:Join the Georgetown Art Center in welcoming artist Chris Ireland for an in-depth discussion about his Dead Letter Office exhibit. \n“Like undeliverable mail\, memories are often formed with an intended recipient or purpose that no longer exists. We remember people who are gone\, different versions of ourselves\, or places that may or may not still exist. The images remain\, capturing moments that feel familiar but unresolved\, like messages sent without knowing if they were ever received. The titles reference memories that influenced the images\, inviting viewers to question not only the subject itself\, but the ways their own perceptions shape what they see\,” Chris Ireland.

Whether using sculpture\, performance\, painting\, video or photography\, central to Isenstein’s work is an examination of how we perceive and understand our world and ourselves. Isenstein has shown her work nationally and internationally\, including at The Whitney Museum of Art\, New York City\, The Hammer Museum\, Los Angeles\, Tate Liverpool\, UK\, PS1\, New York\, Palais de Tokyo\, Paris and ICA Chattanooga. She lives in Portland\, Oregon. \nThis program was made possible with support from The Southwest and Border Cultures Institute.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Cameo
DESCRIPTION:The University Art Museum is excited to present “Cameo”\, an interactive exhibition developed via collaboration between the NMSU Department of Art students and faculty\, the UAM\, and Portland-based visual artist Jamie Isenstein. The exhibition features a brand-new work by Isenstein\, “Still Life with Flowers” (2026)\, in her signature format: a sculptural performance showcasing parts of a living human body. \nA hand grips a bunch of flowers. Gleaming objects rest in a pool of light. A sheet of paper is crumpled by an invisible hand. Which of this is real? Which of this is fake? How can we trust what we see? These simple questions are at the root of art history and museums. And they are central to current debates about artificial intelligence and artificial general intelligence. This spring\, NMSU students and the University Art Museum’s broader community are invited to reflect on these ideas through an exhibition that playfully engages viewers as an essential part of the experience. “Cameo” opens March 27\, 2026 and will be on display through July 18\, 2026.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Hook\, Eye\, Mouth: Eleanor Aldrich\, Matthan Cowart\, Poppy DeltaDawn & Higinio Martinez
DESCRIPTION:smoke the moon present Hook\, Eye\, Mouth: a group show of work by Eleanor Aldrich\, Matthan Cowart\, Poppy DeltaDawn and Higinio Martinez in the casita gallery. This show brings together four artists working across painting\, sculpture and textile to ply the edges of form with an ecstatic gaze. Hook\, Eye\, Mouth presents work that boomerangs through the surface tension of reference\, craft and material inquiry. \nThough their studio practices encompass a vast arena of formal pursuits\, the four artists are united by their creative rigor. From punchy\, delicate weavings by Poppy DeltaDawn to the layered and hyper-saturated wall sculptures by Matthan Cowart\, the work in Hook\, Eye\, Mouth serves as absurdist scrolls. \nEach piece deifies its own reference: slogans\, discarded daily objects and children’s stories appearing in a flash and then morphing into something new and strange. Through a trove of reference each artist maintains their stylistic integrity; asking questions about what we know and how truth changes upon second glance. This show underscores the way that artists can serve as translators.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Lana Scholtz: Centrifuge
DESCRIPTION:smoke the moon presents Centrifuge\, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Lana Scholtz. The Albuquerque\, NM based artist will exhibit a suite of large scale\, saturated oil paintings on linen throughout smoke the moon’s main gallery space. Scholtz received an MFA in Painting from UNM in 2025. This is the artist’s debut solo show in Santa Fe. The works in Centrifuge are filled with layered vision\, the prismatic force of the universe on full display. \nA gravitational language with mysterious laws emerges in Scholtz’s paintings. Her scenes depict the helixed relationship between internal and external worlds. Objects yield toward an unknown center\, compelled by great forces. The center never holds\, and a kaleidoscopic system transforms recognizable structures into otherworldly terrains. The material research for Centrifuge traversed physics\, anatomy and the earth sciences. Scholtz’s paintings play within the phantasmic outer limits of the scientific world.

SUMMARY:Curate Presents: Year Of The Horse
DESCRIPTION:Curate Presents: Year Of The Horse\nOn view March 28–June 30 2026 \nJoin Curate for an afternoon celebration with special guest DJ Luz Skylarker. \n2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse. Horses have inspired great works of art for millennia\, and have shaped human culture worldwide with their friendship and hard work. Join us to celebrate this group show featuring 17 artists. \nThis show features the work of Andrew Michael Joseph\, Bobbie Jansen\, Beth Waldron-Yuhas\, Christine Alexander\, Daniel Valverde\, Jen Turner\, Jennifer Caloyeras\, Lindsey Chambley\, Mary Neiberg\, Melissa Jenski\, Pyara Ingersoll\, Rachel Peach\, Robyn Thayer\, Sophia Wasteneys\, Suzanne Frary\, Tim Reed\, Zoe Schiefer. \nImage:\nMary Neiberg\, Mare In The High Desert\n24″ x 36″\nFramed Photo
