SUMMARY:Reception: Jerry Wellman: Navigators: Edges of Becomings Installations
DESCRIPTION:Santa Fe artist Jerry Wellman\, co-creator of the experimental art space Axle Contemporary\, has been developing the Navigator project for more than five years. The work began during residencies at Vital Spaces in Santa Fe and the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming. In 2025\, Wellman presented three installments—one each in Santa Fe\, Taos\, and Albuquerque. Ultimately\, he envisions as many as forty distinct iterations appearing in galleries and unexpected sites\, accompanied by an artist book of sketches\, observations\, and reveries. \nNavigators: On the Edges of Becomings is a spirited\, mythopoetic shrine-installation composed of diagrams\, language\, ceramics\, works on paper\, sculpture\, light\, and sound. Spilling across the floor and descending from the ceiling\, the installation creates the sensation of stepping into a living book. Through this constellation of objects and signals\, Wellman offers visual resources and imaginative tools for orienting ourselves. \nAt the heart of the project is Wellman’s belief that in all the forms of matter that surround our species\, there is an inherent intelligence. It is there for us to interact with\, to learn and grow from\, to enrich our lives\, and support the world around us. Navigators celebrates the dazzling breadth of human capacities. Using lateral\, associative\, and poetic visual strategies that can unsettle assumptions and spark new possibilities. Each installment playfully suggests that we hold the power to shape our personal and collective futures\, in all our timeless becomings. Keys appear throughout—symbolic openings that might lead anywhere\, or everywhere. The Navigators extend an invitation out of isolation and separation\, and into curiosity\, connection\, and wonder. This exhibition will include a series of installations as well as mono-prints\, which will be available for purchase. \nContact: Anne Kelly at anne@historicsantafe.org or call 505.983.2567 for more information.

SUMMARY:Opening: Hiro Cash: Don't Try to Escape
DESCRIPTION:Hiro Cash: Don’t Try to Escape\nOn view: January 30–February 28\, 2026\nOpening reception: Friday\, January 30\, 5-7 pm \nHiro Cash’s exhibition\, Don’t Try to Escape\, transforms perception\, fantasy\, and lived experience into a vivid personal universe shaped through paint\, gesture\, and layered media. Driven by sound and rhythm\, his work forms a visceral arena where images push forward to complete what reality leaves undone. \n“The work consists of expressing everything and my way of understanding the world and reality around me by connecting my imagination and making it my own world by engaging in painting\, drawing\, and other mixed media. Drawing more influence to the music I listen to\, and to help fulfill the gaps of what’s missing to the pieces.” —Hiro Cash \nImage: Hiro Cash\, Don’t Try to Escape\, 2025\, acrylic\, oil\, oil stick\, paper collage\, and pencil on canvas\, 47 x 36 inches

SUMMARY:Las Damas x OmniHum – Women in Existentialism
DESCRIPTION:Las Damas x OmniHum – Women in Existentialism\nAn Exhibition Celebrating Female Perspectives on Freedom\, Identity\, and the Human Experience\nOmniHum Gallery\, Taos\, NM | January 31 – March 2\, 2026 \nLas Damas\, Santa Fe’s premier female artist collective\, is partnering with OmniHum Gallery in the heart of Taos to present Las Damas x OmniHum – Women in Existentialism\, an exhibition that invites female artists across New Mexico to explore the rich and complex theme of existentialism through their creative practice. \nRooted in the philosophy that emphasizes the deeply personal nature of human experience and the inherent freedom and autonomy of the individual\, existentialism offers a vast terrain for artistic interpretation. This exhibition encourages artists to reflect on what it means to exist — whether through the lens of being female or simply being human — and to present works that question\, challenge\, and celebrate that experience. \n• Opening Reception: Saturday\, January 31st – 5pm\n• Exhibition Dates: January 31 – March 22\, 2026 \nSet against the backdrop of OmniHum Gallery’s intimate Taos setting\, Las Damas x OmniHum – Women in Existentialism promises to be a dynamic and thought-provoking exhibition\, showcasing the diversity\, depth\, and power of female voices in contemporary art here in New Mexico. \nFor more details about the exhibition\, please visit lasdamasnewmexico.org

SUMMARY:Fly High\, Fly Guy
DESCRIPTION:Lydia presents the late Daniel Johnston’s “Fly High\, Fly Eye”\, January 31–March 22. Originally scheduled to take place closer to what would have been his 65th birthday\, this exhibition is a belated gift for Austin’s treasure. \nThis exhibition includes all things eyeball in the pantheon of the Daniel Johnston universe—Fly Eye\, Eye Walker\, God Eye\, Dead Dog’s Eyeball\, Fish Eye\, SpEYEder\, and Double Fish Eye. Johnston’s characters have unique ways of interacting in his universe—social commentators\, messengers\, by-standers\, judges\, spies or side-kicks. \nThe character\, “Fly Eye”\, represented death for Daniel. According to his sister\, while Johnston frequently referenced death or suicide in his work\, he was not suicidal. He was always full of hope. Phrases might seem to have one meaning\, but instead frequently meant the opposite. For instance\, the meaning of the phrase “Who Cares?\,” which may seem like a cynical rhetorical question\, became apparent to Marjory when researching for a book she is writing about Daniel’s art. She discovered a reference that he intended the question to be answered—God cares. \nIt may seem a contradiction that a man who suffered so greatly with mental illness\, loss and tragedy might remain hopeful. Clearly\, he still has much to teach us. In therapy\, sometimes my clients may suffer from depression and suicidal thoughts. It can be very disconcerting to people to consider death as an outlet. Often\, I point out that there is an important reason they may be having thoughts about death. Symbolically\, something may need to die\, just not literally. Something needs to change. For Daniel\, a symbol of death\, such as Fly Eye can be seen as hope—hope that people who have been sleeping may awaken and begin to understand.

SUMMARY:1st Sunday Artscrawl: Sandy Johnson and Geri Verble: The Art of Serendipity
DESCRIPTION:Serendipity embraces the unexpected\, honoring the moments of chance that spark creativity and give rise to unique jewelry design. The works of Sandy Johnson and Geri Verble celebrate the beauty found in unplanned encounters where intuition\, material and movement converge to shape wearable works of art. \nSandy Johnson is a jewelry designer working primarily in silver\, fabricating necklaces\, bracelets\, earrings\, rings and chains. Geri Verble specializes in tribal and ethnic jewelry. She developed a passion for collecting ethnic beads and pendants while traveling with the Peace Corps. \nTo demonstrate how serendipity and vision guide the art of jewelry making\, Sandy and Geri invite visitors to create an “Art of Chance” beaded stretch bracelet during our First Sunday ARTScrawl on February 1\, 11 am to 1 pm. A reception for the artists will be February 7\, 1-3 pm.

SUMMARY:Concert: Covenhoven with Audra Rodgers
DESCRIPTION:Covenhoven with special guest Audra Rodgers live at Salon Sage in Taos. \nQuietly forging his own path through the crowded indie folk landscape of 2025\, Joel Van Horne (AKA Covenhoven) released his fifth album The Color of the Dark to glimmering reviews and embarked on an extensive tour schedule that took him all over the U.S. and Canada.  Funding the album with the help of 250 of his loyal fans and self-releasing it in April of 2025\, Denver’s Westword called it a “masterpiece album of lyrical excellence.”  He worked with producer/engineers Dave Wilton (Gregory Alan Isakov\, Nathaniel Rateliff\, A Boy and His Kite\, etc.) and Brian Joseph (Bon Iver\, Sufjan Stevens\, etc.) to record 10 new songs. Then during his tours through the spring and summer\, he re-recorded another version of the album in its entirety… calling it Field Notes… made entirely outdoors\, finding make-shift “studios” in stone alcoves and forest hollows in places like Joshua Tree\, Big Sur\, Banff and beyond… he set up a single microphone and let the local birds\, wind\, water\, and other sounds of nature take part in the performances.  Then\, as if two full albums in a year wasn’t enough\, a new single Aeroplane dropped a few months ago that shows Joel dipping his toes into the Americana and folk-rock pools of his heroes.

SUMMARY:Moira Garcia: Xochiyotl: Florescence
DESCRIPTION:“My practice is a continuum of ancestral remembering—of what ceases to be dismembered\, buried\, and forgotten\,” says New Mexican Chicana artist Moira Garcia. By recreating aesthetic qualities\, materials\, design\, and iconographies rooted in pre-Hispanic Mexican legacies and Nahuatl language\, Garcia seeks to reexpose artistic traditions that were destroyed during colonization and which remain largely unrecognized in contemporary culture. \nGarcia is a multidisciplinary artist\, educator\, and native of New Mexico. She holds a BFA in Studio Arts with a focus in Printmaking from the Institute of American Indian Arts\, and an MA in Latin American Studies with concentrations in Art History and Indigenous Studies from the University of New Mexico. Her academic background forms a strong foundation for her artistic practice\, enriching her visual ability with a wealth of linguistic and historical knowledge. Her work is a visible language of symbol\, color\, and metaphor that references and interprets ancient visual culture and cosmologies\, tracing paths of connection with the present day.

SUMMARY:Opening: Malinche
DESCRIPTION:Secret Gallery is pleased to present Malinche\, an exhibition opening February 6\, 2026\, featuring the work of 30+ Southwest Chicana\, Latinx\, and Indigenous artists who carry forward the legacy of Malinche\, also known as Malinzin or Doña Marina. Rather than revisiting her as a historical subject alone\, the exhibition positions Malinche as an inherited presence: one whose strategies of survival\, translation\, and adaptation continue to shape the experience of women navigating language\, power\, and identity today. \nFor centuries\, Malinche has been reduced to symbol\, blamed\, romanticized\, or erased. Malinche centers voices who recognize her not as a cautionary tale\, but as a predecessor. Through their work\, the exhibition frames legacy as something lived and carried\, passed through bodies\, languages\, and cultural memory rather than fixed in historical judgment. \nThe artists in Malinche engage contemporary and research-driven practices that treat her legacy as both inheritance and resistance. Their works speak to experiences of survival\, living within borderlands\, and cultural negotiation\, tracing a lineage from Malinche’s survival under colonial violence to the ongoing creative strategies women employ today.

SUMMARY:Opening: Nathan Storey: THEY DISAPPEARED TOWARD THE WATER
DESCRIPTION:THEY DISAPPEARED TOWARD THE WATER is Nathan Storey’s fourth solo exhibition and marks the artist’s first in Colorado. Titled after John Rechy’s novel Rushes\, these new works reflect on how queer histories slip from view—pulled away like a tide\, carried forward\, submerged\, or lost. Working with reimagined queer archives and materials\, the exhibition considers how ephemera circulates between disappearance and return. In queer hands\, fragments are handled\, reworked\, and held close\, reclaimed as evidence and as offerings: sites of memory\, desire\, and survival. \nNathan Storey is an interdisciplinary artist\, curator\, and educator currently based in Boulder\, Colorado. His work traces the relationship between printed matter and queer desire\, memory\, and loss. Storey’s work has been supported by ICA San Diego\, 80WSE New York\, Candice Madey Gallery\, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art\, and galleries internationally. Storey’s work has been featured in MATTE Editions\, Queer Aesthetics Journal\, and the San Diego Union-Tribune. He has attended residencies and workshops at Cornell University\, Ithaca; Fine Arts Work Center\, Provincetown; Anderson Ranch Art Center\, Snowmass; and the Prattsville Art Center; Catskills. \nIn 2019\, he founded SUBLIMATION\, an artist-run space supporting multidisciplinary exhibitions by underrepresented artists in New York’s Lower East Side. In 2024\, Storey established UNDERTOW\, an artist-run press supporting queer artists’ printed matter and ephemera\, the first and only arts organization in Colorado dedicated to queer visual culture. He is a 2025 Queer|Art|Mentorship fellow working with Ken Gonzales-Day. Storey is the curator of the iterative exhibition\, RUINS: PERFORMING QUEER HISTORY. He holds a BFA from NYU and an MFA from UC San Diego. Storey has taught at UC San Diego\, MSU Denver\, Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design\, and the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art.

The artist’s mission is to empower participants through direct public engagement\, adding a significant dimension to the project as a whole. SUMMARY:Jody Folwell: New Works in Clay
DESCRIPTION:King Galleries is celebrating the opening of O’Powa O’Mean at the New Mexico Museum of Art with an exhibition of new work by Jody Folwell. The opening will take place Saturday \,February 7 from 2-4 pm. \nJody Folwell has long been one of the essential innovators in Pueblo pottery. She is the daughter of Rose Naranjo and the mother of potters Polly Rose Folwell and Susan Folwell. Her pottery is displayed in museums around the country\, and her work is featured in numerous books\, including “The Art of Clay” and “Legacy of Generations.” Her revolutionary work of the 1970s changed the surface of Santa Clara pottery with her distinctive firings\, use of various clay slips\, and utilization of non-traditional design elements. Creative patina and a wide variety of subject matter in her designs follow elements of traditional Pueblo subjects and reach out to current events of the world. Today\, Jody continues to evolve in her art\, and each piece brings together different aspects of her long history of making pottery.
