SUMMARY:Perspective Tour with Jade Walker
DESCRIPTION:Join The Contemporary Austin for a Perspective Tour with Austin-based sculptor and curator Jade Walker exploring The Living Temple: The World of Moki Cherry. \nPerspective Tours is a talk and tour series in which guest artists\, curators\, and subject matter experts share information about their own work while lending insights into our exhibitions. \nJade Walker’s textile-based practice draws on the histories of women’s work\, the knitters\, weavers\, and spinners who encoded meaning into cloth\, often invisibly\, across generations. Her research traces how fiber arts have long served as a form of communication\, record-keeping\, and quiet resistance\, passed down through the labor of mothers and their mothers before them. \nMoki Cherry built her entire artistic life around a similar premise. Raising her children\, among them musician Neneh Cherry\, while collaborating with her partner\, jazz composer Don Cherry\, Moki wove caregiving and creativity into a single\, inseparable practice. Her tapestries\, costumes\, and transformed domestic spaces were not made alongside her life as a mother; they were made from it. As she put it: “Home is stage\, stage is home.” \nTogether\, Walker and Cherry illuminate a tradition of artists for whom motherhood is not a backdrop to the work\, but its very material. Walker will open with a reflection on her own practice before leading a tour through the exhibition.

SUMMARY:The Genius of Dogs: Being with Humans
DESCRIPTION:Are you a dog lover? Then please join us for an evening with renowned evolutionary anthropologists Brian Hare and Vanessa Woods\, authors of the New York Times bestseller The Genius of Dogs. Their groundbreaking research at Duke University reveals that dogs have a unique gift for getting along with people—one that has shaped their evolution and allowed them to build extraordinary relationships with humans. Joining Hare and Woods in conversation will be the legendary author David Quammen\, who The New York Times has called “our greatest living chronicler of the natural world.”  Together they will discuss new insights into dogs’ cognitive abilities\, their deep feelings for the humans in their lives\, and how we might better understand and care for these beloved canine companions.

SUMMARY:Recuerdo and The Midnight Fire: film shorts featuring Santero Nicholas Herrera
DESCRIPTION:A 15th generation New Mexican\, santero Nicholas Herrera lives on his family’s 6th generation homestead in a small rural community in northern New Mexico. Christopher Beaver’s Recuerdo: Land\, Water and Art (2016\,16 minutes running time) captures Herrera’s ongoing remembrance of the artistic traditions of New Mexico as he works his family land and acequia ditches (both in town and in the Potrero valley) in-between his painting and carving sessions in his studio. \nThe Midnight Fire by Beth Wald (2022\, 3.07 minutes running time)\, shows the results of a significant wildfire that occurred in the Potrero Valley on June 9\, 2022\, which had a devastating effect on Herrera’s land grant property in that valley. When the area was considered too dangerous for firefighters to enter\, Herrera and Wald both entered the property to protect the family’s land. \nQ and A with the film makers and the artist after the screenings.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Marcus DeSieno: Geography of Disappearance: Migrant Deaths on the US/Mexico Border
DESCRIPTION:Project Launch Grant recipient Marcus DeSieno talks about his project Geography of Disappearance: Migrant Deaths on the US/Mexico Border. The United Nations has declared the border between the United States and Mexico to be the deadliest land crossing in the world and a humanitarian crisis. Thousands of men\, women\, and children have died crossing the over 1\,900 mile border through brutal deserts and mountains with harsh climate conditions year-round. DeSieno photographs along the border and goes to the exact locations where the bodies of unknown migrants have been recovered using autopsy reports and data collected by humanitarian organizations as well as local and state police.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Georgetown Art Center in welcoming artists Heidi Lowell and Catherine Richardson for an in-depth discussion about their Land…ing exhibit. This is a free event taking place during normal business hours and is open to all ages. \n“Land…ing: Geology of Place” brings together the work of two distinct artistic voices united by their profound engagement with landforms and the places we inhabit. SUMMARY:Art & Curator in Dialogue: i thought i saw you yesterday
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Joe Ramiro Garcia and curator hazel batrezchavez in conversation exploring memory\, and ancestral knowledge as part of the exhibit programming for i thought i saw you yesterday. \nTue Dec 1st 12:30-1:30pm // Wells Fargo Auditorium in the Roy E. Disney Performing Arts Center at the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, 1701 4th St. SW Albuquerque\, NM 87120 \nAbout the artist: Joe Ramiro Garcia is an Art Institute of Chicago–educated artist who moved to Santa Fe from his native Houston in 1987. In his paintings\, he creates an image or pattern on paper that’s soaked in gum arabic and water\, next the paper plate is charged with oil paint and then hand pressed onto a painting surface. It’s a transfer method similar to those used by Jasper Johns\, Robert Rauschenberg\, Andy Warhol\, and Nancy Spero—but also vastly different\, because Garcia doesn’t silkscreen\, monoprint\, or etch. The end results are oil paintings that Garcia calls “open narratives” due to layered imagery. Garcia\, who is represented by Blue Gallery in Kansas City\, has recently had several solo exhibitions at Santa Fe’s LewAllen Galleries.

SUMMARY:Art & Curator in Dialogue: i thought i saw you yesterday
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Esteban Ismael Durán and curator hazel batrezchavez in conversation exploring memory\, and ancestral knowledge in i thought i saw you yesterday \nSun Dec 6th 12:30-1:30pm\nWells Fargo Auditorium in the Roy E. Disney Performing Arts Center in the National Hispanic Cultural Center // 1701 4th St SW Albuquerque\, NM 87102 \nAbout the artist: Esteban Ismael Durán\, a self-taught artist\, was born in 1955 and grew up in Albuquerque’s historic Old Town. His roots in that traditional community have always been important to him and helped him to shape his work. As a young man\, he began his formal studies with artist Frank McCulloch. In 1993 he started incorporating traditional New Mexican tinwork into his paintings\, studying this discipline with tinsmith Ted Arellanes. Esteban’s local work has included public art for the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County. He\, along with his cousin PAZ\, had the lead role in the 1995 creation of a series of tile murals along Fourth Street in Barelas\, mentoring local youth to help design the murals based on Barelas’ history. Esteban began to work with recycled materials as he ventured into combining traditional tinwork with more contemporary media. For the past ten years\, he has built the unique ability to blend contemporary and traditional media/design and the use of recycled materials.
