SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Erica Lord in Conversation with Lara Evans
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Erica Lord and Lara Evans to learn about the legacy of performing James Luna’s Artifact Piece\, Revisited. \nEvans and Lord will speak about Lord’s reenactment of James Luna’s The Artifact Piece\, initially performed at the San Diego Museum of Man in 1987\, in which Luna placed himself in a display case with some personal items. The work prompts critical reflection on the objectification and fetishization of Indigenous bodies and cultures in museums and the art world at large\, while foregrounding contemporary and gendered perspectives. The speakers will explore how Lord and Luna came into agreement about Lord’s performance and then inspired one another’s subsequent work.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Turning From a Fixed Direction by Lita Kenyon
DESCRIPTION:Lita Kenyon’s work explores abstraction’s ability to evoke balance and tension without relying on narrative. Kenyon avoids specific references\, allowing meaning to emerge organically as images blend and shift within fields of color and gestural marks. Inspiration comes from nonobjective forms as they emerge in the composition. Kenyon’s process is guided by intuition-driven methods\, where each piece begins with a gesture and evolves through scraping\, repainting\, and layering.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Ariel Wilson + Matt Kowal
DESCRIPTION:Join artists Ariel C. Wilson and Matt Kowal for an in-gallery conversation on their exhibition\, from where the sun is\, to wherever you are\, currently on view in UMOCA’s AIR Space. \nDeveloped during Wilson’s 2025 Artist-in-Residence at UMOCA\, the exhibition traces a continuous cycle of daylight and darkness around the globe through live webcam imagery gathered across twenty-four time zones. Slow-moving and low-resolution\, the projected images foreground the technological systems through which many people now encounter landscape\, atmosphere\, and distance. \nTogether\, Wilson and Kowal will discuss the development of the project\, their collaborative process\, and the exhibition’s engagement with photography\, environmental observation\, global connectivity\, and the relationship between representation and lived experience. \nThe conversation will take place within the exhibition and will be followed by audience Q&A.

SUMMARY:Support Preserving Place: The Santa Fe Continuum Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The upcoming ‘Preserving Place: The Santa Fe Continuum’ explores the aspects of Santa Fe that have made it an attractive tourist and re-location destination for decades while looking at the many dualities that may create the disconnect in communication and social cohesiveness resulting from preserving the aesthetics primarily of the architecture of downtown Santa Fe. Preservation and its intersection with social issues proves to be a highly relevant topic especially on the occasion of the revisions of and changes to Santa Fe’s General Plan and Land Use Code. This year we want to explore the connections between the various sections of town – downtown\, midtown\, and southside and growth in the surrounding County; how the City and the County work together in governing this development\, and what can be done to connect these areas and communicate more about issues in the various neighborhoods and communities in Santa Fe. The goal is to foster discussion about social\, planning\, development\, and architecture-related issues around housing\, development\, adaptive reuse\, and designing for the New Mexico climate using our preservation of the historical character of Santa Fe as a basis for these discussions. This event will take place at the New Mexico History Museum in a day-long event of three panels and an open forum \nSanta Fe stands at a pivotal moment. The Santa Fe Continuum convenes civic leaders\, architects/builders\, developers\, preservationists\, and community voices to explore how our past informs an equitable and sustainable future. The choices we make now about housing\, urban design\, and growth will determine not only what our city looks like\, but who can call it home. Continuum 2026 brings us together to ask a shared question: How do we preserve Santa Fe’s sense of place while addressing issues of land use\, growth\, and affordability? \nInquire at info@historicsantafe.org

SUMMARY:Reception & Artist Talk: Echoes of Care: Vessels of the Future
DESCRIPTION:What will remain of care\, labor\, and memory in one-hundred years? Echoes of Care: Vessels of the Future envisions a speculative archive where acts of nurturing\, witnessing\, and transformation persist beyond a century. This exhibition builds upon my interdisciplinary practice in printmaking\, digital media\, and community-engaged art to examine how personal and collective histories are carried forward—through objects\, ritual\, and the evolving role of women as vessels of survival and connection. The works presented are a synthesis of print-based installation\, textile works\, and experimental digital media\, creating a bridge between past and future. In this imagined future\, what we make and leave behind—both tangible and intangible—holds the imprint of care. Through layered prints on fabric\, interactive digital pieces\, and a participatory community element\, this exhibition explores themes of sustenance\, resilience\, and remembrance as they shape a future landscape.

SUMMARY:Curator Talk: Lucid Perturbations: The Sewn Drawings and Books of China Marks
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 16\, 2026\, from 2–3 p.m. for a curator talk about Lucid Perturbations and the sewn works of China Marks\, featuring gallery director Carina Evangelista and longtime friend of China Marks\, Pamela Matsuda-Dunn\, also an artist. Evangelista and Matsuda-Dunn will lead us through Marks’s unorthodox sewn multiverse of allegory\, dark humor\, and wit\, offering insights into what possessed Marks to produce\, with singular focus\, over 600 sewn tableaux in the last twenty-three years of her art practice. \nEvangelista and Matsuda-Dunn will also share how Lucid Perturbations came to be; the artists’ cache of references for the largely allegorical works; and the process behind the artist’s sewn oeuvre. A rare opportunity to gain insight into the world of an unsung artist’s life and practice\, this conversation accompanies China Marks’s largest solo exhibition.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Poetics of the Mundane
DESCRIPTION:Archway Gallery presents Poetics of the Mundane\, featuring new paintings and collages by Silvia PintoSouza and ceramic works and sculptures by guest artist Jeff Forster\, on view May 2–June 4\, 2026. Join the opening reception Saturday\, May 2\, from 5 to 8 p.m.\, with artist talk at 6:30 p.m. \nArchway Gallery artist\, Silvia PintoSouza\, and Department Head of Ceramics at The Glassell School of Art\, Jeff Forster\, are focusing their dual exhibit on the transitory nature of life and the scenes and objects that fire their imagination\, capturing both a sense of permanence and transition through their artistic media. \nThis compelling dual exhibition explores the fleeting nature of everyday life\, transforming ordinary objects and overlooked materials into works that balance permanence and change. PintoSouza elevates familiar subjects through layered\, translucent acrylics\, simplifying form and color to create luminous\, abstract compositions rich with depth and nuance. Working in intimate formats\, she brings precision and quiet intensity to each piece. \nForster reimagines discarded materials—drawing from agricultural and industrial remnants—to create sculptural forms that highlight texture\, process\, and reinvention. His environmentally conscious approach reveals beauty in what is often ignored\, offering a powerful reflection on memory\, transformation\, and the poetry found in the everyday.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: In The Eyes by Taylor Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Sourced from her grandmothers’ photo archives and the archive of Film & Television media\, Taylor Thomas questions the influence of external representational systems on the Black family. In her paintings\, Thomas paints the skin of her subjects with chrome paint\, a nod to television static and the ambiguous nature of knowing an “other”. Thomas’ collages explore the relationship between skin and body and interiority and exteriority as she abstracts the faces of members of Black Hollywood along with members of her own family into pixelated squares.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Mosaics with Kristin Javier
DESCRIPTION:Kristin Javier will have an Artist Talk on Friday\, April 17th\, 2026\, 2pm about her new exhibition Mosaics: Into the Light. Snacks and beverages will be served. \nKristin’s Statement: \n“I speak in dialects of brokenness and light. Mosaic becomes a metaphor for restoration.\nMy practice is a dialogue between the visions in my mind\, the hammer\, and the stone.\nMy process is deeply rooted in ancient methods.\nI ask each tessera to break using only hand tools\, cutting each piece with a carbide tipped hammer and a pitched anvil called a hardie.\nI place each fragment directly into thinset tinted with earth oxides. I allow each shard to stand as its own sculpture\, possessing the power to reflect\, refract\, or absorb light.\nInitially self-taught using broken ceramic shards\, I eventually sought the rigor of Classical training at Studio Arte del Mosaico in Ravenna Italy and The Chicago Mosaic School.\nMy work is an exploration of the mystical\, and a manifestation of the resilience of the human spirit.\nEvery Mosaic created over the past six years represents a step in my healing journey toward the light.”
