SUMMARY:Book Launch: Native Genes
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the book launch and exhibition of Native Genes\, Summer 2025 by Ryle Yazzie. Yazzie is a Diné artist\, veteran\, and currently a graduate student at the Institute of American Indian Arts. Native Genes catalogs a pop-up art installation of used jeans sourced from the Navajo Reservation from local flea markets in Window Rock\, Shiprock\, Gallup and Yah-Ta-hey areas. As part of the work\, Yazzie took a series of self-portraits of himself wearing the jeans—sometimes too big and sometimes just right–and documents the stories of hardship and determination told through the fabrics’ wearing and natural patina. Putting the used jeans in conversation with himself and in the context of a high-art photo catalog\, the book asks the viewer to consider our obsession with authenticity\, along with the age-old question; what makes something the real deal\, or just a knockoff. \nNative Genes by Ryle Yazzie. Authentically American* before America. \nThe book launch is in conjunction with Yazzie’s MFA thesis at the Institute for American Indian Arts and will feature a gallery show exhibiting artworks derived from the book. Native Genes & Limited Edition Riso prints on display and for sale. \nFree tamales by Joe Romero and refreshments will be provided!

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Marc Baseman and Wes Mills | Selected Works
DESCRIPTION:Studio light | space presents selected works by Marc Baseman and Wes Mills\, artists whose practices have developed in conversation since their arrival in Taos in 1991. Both have sustained careers of considerable scope: Mills represented in major collections from MoMA to the Whitney\, Baseman exhibiting across the country from the Harwood Museum onward. This exhibition focuses on the particular intensity of their drawing practice. \nBaseman’s compositions\, many measuring just over three inches on each side\, achieve their power through precision. Working at miniature scale\, he manipulates negative space and layered horizons to create depth that rewards sustained attention. Mills brings parallel rigor to his investigations of geometric abstraction\, balancing systematic structure with the warmth of individual mark-making. \nBoth artists have chosen concentration over expansion\, intimacy over spectacle. For each\, drawing functions as a method of inquiry. Constraint generates meaning. Reduction clarifies form. The viewer’s sustained attention changes what the work becomes. \nThe drawings gathered here are products of time. Decades of looking and making cohere in works that demand careful consideration. In an era that privileges speed and scale\, these works offer an alternative: evidence of what happens when artists commit fully to the surface before them with rigor and care.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Mosaics: Into the Light
DESCRIPTION:Reception with the artist on Fri\, April 10th from 5pm-8pm. \nArtist Bio\nKristin Javier is perhaps an unlikely artist. Born in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky\, her childhood was shaped by life outdoors—hiking wooded hills\, racing barefoot through grass\, and searching creek beds for fossils alongside her five siblings. \nHer path led her to the University of New Mexico\, where she studied education and Spanish and Italian translation. Though she once felt rooted in the Land of Enchantment\, life eventually called her back East. After decades away\, she has returned to New Mexico\, completing a full-circle journey to the place that first inspired her. \nBetween 2017 and 2018\, while raising two daughters\, a life-altering brain infection forced her to rebuild her life step by step. During this difficult recovery\, she discovered the healing power of art. With support from family\, friends\, and a vibrant creative community\, she has committed to a daily mosaic practice for the past six years. A devoted student of the medium\, Kristin continues to explore what she has yet to understand\, guided by faith and the belief that every person carries a unique light. \nToday\, she divides her time between Northern New Mexico’s high desert and New York’s Hudson Valley\, weaving both landscapes into her work. \nArtist Statement\nI speak in dialects of brokenness and light; mosaic becomes a metaphor for restoration. My practice is a dialogue between vision\, hammer\, and stone\, rooted in ancient methods. \nEach tessera is shaped by hand using a carbide-tipped hammer and hardie. Set into tinted thinset\, every fragment stands as its own sculpture\, reflecting\, refracting\, or absorbing light. \nTrained in Ravenna\, Italy\, and Chicago\, my work explores the mystical and embodies resilience—each piece a step toward healing and light.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Two Faced. Three Faced. Four Faced. Five.
DESCRIPTION:Lydia Art Salon (formerly Lydia Street Gallery) presents “Two Faced. Three Faced. Four Faced. Five.” Billie Clarke\, Samir Faris\, Karim B. Hamid\, Monika Hardy\, William P. \nImmer April 3-May 17\, 2026 \nOpening reception: Thursday\, April 3rd\, 6-9 pm \ntwo faced. three faced. four faced. five.\n“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose\nBy any other word would smell as sweet.\nSo Romeo would\, were he not Romeo called\,\nRetain that dear perfection which he owes\nWithout that title. Romeo\, doff thy name\,\nAnd\, for thy name\, which is no part of thee\,\nTake all myself.” William Shakespeare / Romeo & Juliet\, Act 2\, scene 2 / circa 1595 \nIn the famous Shakespearean play ‘Romeo & Juliet’\, Juliet is not allowed to associate with Romeo because he is a Montague. If he had any other name it would be fine. But\, he doesn’t. She’s complaining that his name is meaningless. If the rose had any other name it would still be the same. So with Romeo; he would still be the same beautiful young man even if he had a different name. So\, as Juliet says: What IS in a name? Why is it so important to have a name? What do we associate with a name? Name’s are commonly known as associators. They are a way in which we\, as humans\, can define someone as other. Therefore\, we can determine a lot through a name. Of course\, we can associate it. But\, we can also control an identity to a certain extent. We can limit. We can arrange our thoughts and actions. We can also restrict ourselves. Why is it so important that we limit ourselves to a single name or identity? What is it about us that we allow ourselves to restrict ourselves to one identity?

SUMMARY:Artist Talks\, Shared Terrain: Art\, Law\, and Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Can art inspire legal reform? Can lawyers embrace art for advocacy? Can artists and lawyers collaborate to protect the environment? This half-day program\, hosted by the UNM School of Law\, seeks to open a dialogue exploring these questions. We’ll hear from painters and sculptors and comic-book makers in conversation with writers and lawyers and law professors. We’ll engage in our own conversations\, forging connections\, imagining new pathways toward protecting and healing our shared terrain.

SUMMARY:Curator Tour: Artistry Across Asia
DESCRIPTION:Join Colin Pearson\, Curator of Asian Arts\, for an intimate in-gallery tour exploring the exhibitions Flowers of Punjab and Splendors of East Asian Cloisonné. \nThe tour begins with Flowers of Punjab\, an exploration of the region’s rich material traditions with a focus on phulkari—a vibrant form of embroidery historically crafted by women across generations. Drawn from the Khanuja Family Collection\, these works highlight the artistry\, symbolism\, and communal practices that shaped Punjab’s textile heritage. \nThe conversation then moves to Splendors of East Asian Cloisonné\, showcasing the brilliance and technical mastery of enamel craftsmanship across China and Japan. Featuring a distinctive group of vessels from the Museum’s collection\, this exhibition traces the art form’s evolution from its Chinese roots to its expansion in Japan\, where artisans introduced new color palettes\, optical effects\, and innovative textures.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Speaking Ancestors | [Re]Awakening Spirit
DESCRIPTION:The Liliana Bloch Gallery is proud to present Speaking Ancestors / [Re]Awakening Spirit\, a new exhibition by Kelly Tapia-Chuning that invites viewers to reflect on ancestral knowledge\, memory\, and stewardship that carry across the generations. \nRooted in the Indigenous principle of the Seven Generations\, which is credited to the Haudenosaunee Confederacy (Iroquois Confederacy) but echoes across Indigenous cultures throughout the Americas\, the principle highlights how our current actions are shaped by our ancestors\, and in turn\, we shape the generations yet to come. \nTapia-Chuning translates these principles into seven offerings\, consisting of serapes that the artist deconstructed and reconfigured\, each one representing a generation of ancestors. Tapia-Chuning uses symbolic materials as anchors across time that mark cycles of renewal\, migration\, grounding\, protection\, and guidance\, resisting the linear constructs of time.

SUMMARY:1st Sunday Artscrawl: Sandy Johnson and Geri Verble: The Art of Serendipity
DESCRIPTION:Serendipity embraces the unexpected\, honoring the moments of chance that spark creativity and give rise to unique jewelry design. Geri Verble specializes in tribal and ethnic jewelry. She developed a passion for collecting ethnic beads and pendants while traveling with the Peace Corps. \nTo demonstrate how serendipity and vision guide the art of jewelry making\, Sandy and Geri invite visitors to create an “Art of Chance” beaded stretch bracelet during our First Sunday ARTScrawl on February 1\, 11 am to 1 pm.
