SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Turning From a Fixed Direction by Lita Kenyon
DESCRIPTION:Lita Kenyon’s work explores abstraction’s ability to evoke balance and tension without relying on narrative. Kenyon avoids specific references\, allowing meaning to emerge organically as images blend and shift within fields of color and gestural marks. Inspiration comes from nonobjective forms as they emerge in the composition. Kenyon’s process is guided by intuition-driven methods\, where each piece begins with a gesture and evolves through scraping\, repainting\, and layering.

SUMMARY:Reception: Roger Evans: Fun\, Fantasy and Frivolity
DESCRIPTION:Fun\, Fantasy and Frivolity is pure unfiltered Roger Evans. While comical on the surface\, the works explore the connection between memory and experience—between reality and fantasy—ranging from the absurd to the familiar. They include outdoor sculptures\, paintings full of texture and color\, a mosaic\, a book and a collection of prints and drawings. They are a culmination of all that he has experienced in his life; his memories\, dreams and perceptions\, woven into narratives that are full of humor. \nRoger was already 40 when he came to Placitas in the early 70s. He was not part of the hippy movement\, though he admits to being inspired by them. He purchased land in the forest off Tunnel Springs Road where he continues to live in a domed house—just seven hundred square feet of living space plus a two-hundred-foot loft for sleeping – tiled in mosaic with animal sculptures at every turn. One can’t help but marvel at his talent for remaining positive in an uncertain world – all while having the last laugh. \n“Someone asked\, ‘What would you call this art?’ And I thought about that. I guess I would call it contemporary folk art.” \nThe artists’ reception will be celebrated with fellowship and refreshments on Saturday\, May 16\, 1-3 pm. The First Sunday ARTScrawl on May 3 from 11 am to 1 pm will include a meet the artist segment as Roger shares some original drawings and the stories behind his images.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Subject to Surviving | Juvana Soliven
DESCRIPTION:Art League Houston is pleased to present “Subject to Surviving\,” the Texas debut solo exhibition of Honolulu-based artist Juvana Soliven. This installation presents a years-long exploration of work that utilizes a pixelated censor motif as a visual language\, which speaks to themes of bodily autonomy\, gender performance\, and survival. \nSoliven’s work has been guided by Audre Lorde’s “The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House”\, as well as Terri Kapsalis’ “Mastering the Female Pelvis: Race and Tools of Reproduction”\, an essay which articulates the horror of gynecological practices suffered by enslaved Black women\, the mass sterilization by the US of women and girls in Puerto Rico\, the forced sterilization of incarcerated women\, and coercive and “incentivized” contraceptive trials placed on poor women of color around the world by US and European governments. These are systems of control exercised against women under the guise of societal improvement and medical advancement that would contribute to the fulfillment of our duties in society.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Lucid Perturbations: The Sewn Drawings and Books of China Marks Part Two
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 15 May 2026 from 5 to 7 p.m. for part two of the opening reception of Lucid Perturbations: The Sewn Drawings and Books of China Marks\, an exhibition of over 200 sewn tableaux by China Marks. Featuring a total of 147 yards of fabric\, a length nearly one and a half times the height of the Statue of Liberty\, this monographic exhibition is installed in the gallery’s 5\,000 square feet of exhibition space\, weaving a tapestry that records a quarter century of an unsung artist’s singular vision and consuming passion for drawing with the sewn line. \nAlthough once lauded by The New York Times arts writer Grace Glueck for the bravura of her avant-garde sewn work\, Marks has remained largely under the radar. Lucid Perturbations presents to the public\, for the first time\, the broadest survey of the psychological nooks and crevices of Marks’s sewn multiverse in all of its dark humor\, aporia\, and wit.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Swoon: Into the Forest Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition opening: May 15–6pm. \nExhibition open May 15–July 10\, 2026. \nFor the last few years\, Swoon has been working on her most intimate story and set of characters yet: Sibylant Sisters. This autobiographical\, multidimensional artwork is immersive and vulnerable\, and portrays a magical story set in her childhood through drawing\, painting\, an oracle deck\, and a stop motion film. The artist presents her story so that others can find healing the way she did\, over years of “making the subconscious conscious” by exploring her parents’ opioid addictions through magical realism. Artwork from Sibylant Sisters will be the focus of Into the Forest. Her oracle deck will be debuted at the opening\, where Swoon will be giving readings.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Western Cowboy: Reloaded
DESCRIPTION:Western Cowboy: Reloaded (May 8–June 20\, 2026)  brings together the work of six Colorado-based photographers Juan Fuentes\, Constance Jaeggi\, Amanda Lopez\, Jack Ludlam\, Rob Hammer\, and Ian Warren to reconsider one of the most enduring figures in American culture: the cowboy. Long celebrated as a symbol of independence and frontier mythology\, the cowboy also reflects a complex history shaped by Indigenous presence\, Hispanic traditions\, and the realities of ranch and rodeo life. This exhibition looks beyond the singular icon of the cowboy to reveal the layered realities of the region and the communities who have shaped it. \nOpening Reception is Friday\, May 8th (5pm–8pm). In partnership with Mad Agriculture. This event is free and open to the public. \nWe’re also excited to host multiple panels with the exhibiting artists and community members. There is no cost to participate in any of the events. \nIn-Person Artist Panel Discussion:\nSaturday\, May 9th at 1:00pm—Jonnah Perkins\, Director of Media at Mad Agriculture\, will lead a panel discussion in the gallery with exhibition artists Jack Ludlam\, Ian Warren\, and Rob Hammer. \nVirtual Conversation on Escaramuza\, the Poetics of Home:\nSaturday\, May 16th at 12:00pm (MDT)—Samantha Johnston\, CPAC Executive Director and Curator\, will lead a conversation over Zoom with exhibition artist Constance Jaeggi and Angelina Sáenz\, an award-winning educator\, poet and writing project fellow at UCLA. \nIn-Person Artist Panel Discussion:\nWednesday\, May 27th at 5:30pm—Samantha Johnston\, CPAC Executive Director and Curator\, will lead a panel discussion in the gallery with exhibition artists Constance Jaeggi\, Amanda Lopez\, and Juan Fuentes\, along with Naiomy Torres\, founder of Escaramuza Charra Flor de Aguileña. \nGallery Hours: Tuesday–Friday 11am–5pm\, Saturday 12pm–4pm. \nImage Credit: Tradition\, ©Rob Hammer

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Guadalupe Street Feature: Helen K. Tindel
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, May 8th from 5–7pm \nIn her upcoming exhibition\, Helen Tindel approaches painting as an act of surrender rather than control. Rooted in lineage and a deep connection to place\, her work unfolds intuitively\, unplanned\, unforced\, and guided by an internal knowing rather than external expectation. Each piece emerges as part of a continuous\, living practice\, where color\, form\, and movement arise organically. Tindel does not seek to direct interpretation; instead\, she releases the work into the world\, allowing each viewer to bring their own meaning to what is felt\, seen\, and experienced.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: JULIE SOLA - Best Day Every!
DESCRIPTION:RAY DREW GALLERY Presents JULIE SOLA – Best Day Every!\nA solo exhibition of prints & sculpture. \nMay 7–June 26\nReception May 7\, 5–7pm \n“Drawing on early childhood memories of my grandparents and their Mexican culture and heritage\, my work becomes a whimsical and positive interpretation of various periods of my own life. I am especially inspired by my own experiences working in animal husbandry and ranching. Many times in Mexican folklore animals were often used to teach right from wrong or to explain the current political events. This was one way to keep the rural population informed since many of them were illiterate. Animals often assume human characteristics in my work and I strive to create an open-ended narrative that allows my viewers to create their own story. In some of my current work I am writing and illustrating children’s books. This is a wonderful new challenge that pushes me to look at my work from a different perspective.” —Julie Sola\, FAT CROW PRESS STUDIO & MERCANTILE \nRAY DREW GALLERY\nDONNELLY LIBRARY\nNew Mexico Highlands University\n802 NATIONAL AVE LAS VEGAS NM

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: EVOLUTION/REVOLUTION: New Works by Shelley Horton-Trippe
DESCRIPTION:With these paintings on canvas and paper the artist has turned outward\, toward the political. Horton-Trippe has created a series of sardonic and critical images. Opening Reception will feature a collaboration between Horton-Trippe\, poet Catherine Meng and translator/poet Sonja Kravanja who will recite work as an act of “spontaneous revolt.” \nShelley Horton‑Trippe launched her artistic career in Santa Fe in 1976. Over the decades\, she has taught thousands of students and produced an expansive body of work—paintings\, drawings\, installations\, and art actions. Her exhibitions span major international platforms\, including the Venice Biennale\, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, and the SITE Santa Fe tenth Biennial. \nPresented by Phil Space Santa Fe\, ruffling the golden goose since 1999.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Kat Kinnick: Flowering Animals
DESCRIPTION:“Paying attention to what’s outside\, beyond walls\, fences and myths of the modern world\, my painting process inspires me to become more aware\, attuned and present\,” says painter\, illustrator\, printmaker and ceramicist Kat Kinnick. “My art creates a world where animals are reflections of our inner landscape and intimate friends. Nature offers solitude and quiet; a place where you can reset and ground and the loudness and chaos of the world quiets.” \nIllustrating wildlife and the wilderness of the high desert of New Mexico\, Kinnick works to inspire a culture of connectedness to nature. Drawing on the magic and inexplicable qualities of childhood\, her work celebrates the region’s unique ecology and abundant diversity. “Kat’s work uses animals and nature as metaphors for the human world\, deeply connected to the environment and other species\,” says Hecho a Mano’s owner\, Frank Rose. “Through beauty and cuteness\, predation and vulnerability\, her paintings are not representations of animals as much as they are a mirror to ourselves. They have the ability to disarm the viewer and if one is open enough\, recognize their own nature.” \nThe concept for her forthcoming solo exhibition\, Flowering Animals\, grew organically from an artist residency Kinnick attended in Oaxaca\, Mexico. “The most striking thing about Oaxaca is how warm and kind the people are\,” the artist says. “There’s a colorful vitality to the city that’s steeped in reciprocity\, craftsmanship\, culture\, food and art. I wanted to bring this sensation of life into this body of work.” \nOpening Friday May 1\, 5–7pm\nArtist Talk Sunday May 3\, 12–1:30

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: In The Eyes by Taylor Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Sourced from her grandmothers’ photo archives and the archive of Film & Television media\, Taylor Thomas questions the influence of external representational systems on the Black family. In her paintings\, Thomas paints the skin of her subjects with chrome paint\, a nod to television static and the ambiguous nature of knowing an “other”. Thomas’ collages explore the relationship between skin and body and interiority and exteriority as she abstracts the faces of members of Black Hollywood along with members of her own family into pixelated squares.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: MICHAEL SCOTT | Poems from the Fire
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 24\, 2026\, 5pm–7pm opening reception. Exhibition runs through May 23\, 2026. The artist will be in attendance. \nInspired by summer evenings in Maine sitting in front of a bonfire\, Michael Scott’s new body of small paintings and poems (framed together) are reflections on the brevity of our lives within the context of cosmological time. \n“Sitting before the flame I felt the heat of its breath like a blanket over me.\nIt asked\, ‘What are you made of? Now that you feel my warmth\,\nare you the same as the glowing log? The rock that holds the heat?’\nWhere do all things begin\, and will nature’s belongings return to their Origin?” \nThis poem\, written in ink below the image of the fire pit in front of the lake\, is the nugget of the intention behind these intimate works. Immediate and volatile\, Fire sits within the context of a northern landscape which is incomprehensibly ancient. Fire is the transient being—our human experience of time. The landscape\, a result of glacial and geological movements\, is cosmological time 4.56 billion years in the making. By assigning these meanings to the painting’s content\, the images and poetry ask viewers to consider how human experience fits within earth’s much longer rhythms. Contemplating one’s own life in this larger context can offer a transformational understanding; an affirmation of one’s significance and responsibility to the natural world we live within.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: MARK SPENCER | Melting Pot
DESCRIPTION:Melting Pot is a term originated by the British author Isreal Zangwill in his play of the same name to popularize the notion of many cultures blended together to emerge as now only American\, shiny and new; one under a common flag. Now this phrase\, used for decades to describe the macro culture of the U.S.\, is criticized for not valuing diversity\, not recognizing inherent power imbalances. Spencer’s art pushes beyond the limits of many becoming one in this traditional\, even simplified\, sense. Instead\, it suggests the many ARE already one. \n“I was in my late teens when I had the epiphany that all things in this world are connected.” says Spencer. “Our thoughts\, our physical beings\, our gods are all part of the same cosmic fabric.” \nSpencer says human nature is the act of contextualizing one’s life—to make sense and give meaning of one’s time on earth. Nature\, on the other hand\, is all life\, is existence in all its forms. Not that which is alive in the sense of an organic system\, but that which is alive as part of a cosmic system of consciousness. \nThis cosmic consciousness is the melting pot from\, and within\, which this artist draws his forms and dips his brush. The melting pot is the Oneness of it all. We are lucky to be reminded of this truth by those who can show us. Mark Spencer is one of those.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: LAMP group exhibition
DESCRIPTION:LAMP is a group exhibition rooted in practices of accumulation and adornment. Primarily sculptural\, the works span ceramic\, papier-mâché\, textiles\, and found objects—materials that carry the marks of touch\, use\, and return. The exhibition draws inspiration from the fantastical potential of a bookshelf alcove crowded with knickknacks\, and from the push and pull of a warm light bulb: how it reveals the texture of its shade while allowing everything beyond its beam to slip into shadow. LAMP lingers in this tension—between illumination and obscurity\, excess and intimacy—asking what it means to look again at what we already have. At its core\, LAMP is about making a home. Home here is not fixed\, but a space of continual return. Each return brings something new: an object\, a gesture\, a layer. Through acts of adornment\, familiar things are re-seen and re-translated. Function is rendered implicit; materiality\, charm\, and care emerges energetically. Participating artists include Caroline Perkison\, Emma Rossoff\, Gabrielle Constantine\, Jamie Lerman\, Julia Kunze\, and Magdalena Jarkowiec.
