SUMMARY:Issy Wood: Live at Bull Room
DESCRIPTION:Ballroom Marfa presents Issy Wood\, live at Bull Room on September 12. This summer\, we welcome acclaimed UK-based painter and experimental pop star Issy Wood. \nIssy Wood (b. 1993 in Durham\, North Carolina) is an artist living and working between London and Los Angeles. Her music explores the states of her inner and outer emotional world in a vulnerable yet playful manner\, laid out through confessional lyrics encapsulated within lo-fi pop and synthesizers. The performance at Ballroom Marfa will be Wood’s 5th ever live show to date and provides a rare opportunity to see the band in person. \nWood’s history with Ballroom dates back to 2024\, when she exhibited a painting in Ballroom Marfa’s 20th anniversary exhibition\, Perhaps the Truth\, alongside Alejandro Piñeiro Bello\, Robert Nava\, Kiki Smith\, Astrid Terrazas\, and others. This time\, Wood and her band will make the trek from London to Marfa for a special one-night-only musical performance at Bull Room. \nWith a blossoming career as a painter\, Wood turned her attention to music in 2018\, writing\, producing\, and recording on her own. In 2020\, she released her debut EP\, Cries Real Tears\, followed by her first full-length studio album\, My Body Your Choice\, in 2022. \nSince opening Bull Room—a former cattle auction barn turned performance venue—Ballroom Marfa has welcomed a wide range of artists\, including internationally acclaimed piano duo Pavel Kolesnikov and Samson Tsoy\, Hayden Pedigo\, Mary Lattimore\, Green‑House\, Jake Xerxes Fussell\, Grégoire Schaller\, and many more. \nThese performances are part of Ballroom Marfa’s ongoing commitment to connecting rural communities to the global stage while supporting site-responsive work inspired by the distinct landscape of the high desert.

SUMMARY:An Afternoon with Naima Nefertari: Piano Duet & Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join The Contemporary Austin for an afternoon of music and conversation with Naima Nefertari (aka Karlsson)\, visual artist\, musician\, and granddaughter of artist Moki Cherry and jazz iconoclast Don Cherry. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition The Living Temple: The World of Moki Cherry. \nThe program opens with a piano duet featuring Naima and Mexico City-based pianist and composer Ana Ruíz. A longtime collaborator of both Don and Moki Cherry\, Ruíz arranged for the pair to travel their Organic Music Society workshop to Mexico City in 1977. In 2021\, Naima and Ruíz began performing together—carrying forth a multi-generational legacy of music. \nIn the conversation that follows\, Naima reflects on her grandparent’s genre-defying practices and how their philosophies continue to shape her own work across sound\, image\, and improvisation. She is joined by acclaimed filmmaker\, Ephraim Asili\, who has worked closely with the Cherry family estate on an in-progress documentary Don and Moki: Organic Music Society.

SUMMARY:Garrett T. Capps House Concert
DESCRIPTION:Garrett T. Capps\, of San Antonio\, Texas\, returns to Magdalena for his third performance here\, this time solo\, sans his band NASA Country. \nAll are welcome to join us on Sunday October 11\, 4 PM\, at kind of a small array’s new location\, 505 Spruce Street\, Magdalena\, New Mexico. \nSeating is limited\, $20 per person\, all of which goes to the artist. 210.473.9062 to reserve your seats. \nThere probably aren’t enough thick books and serious documentaries recognizing San Antonio as a musical epicenter. But even if there were\, they wouldn’t be nearly as much fun as Garrett T. Capps’ new album\, “I Still Love San Antone”. With all the heartfelt zaniness audiences have come to expect from the S.A.-based singer-songwriter\, the album pushes far beyond any novelty record format. Capps’ masterful work of offbeat regional storytelling incorporates fired-up country-rock and retro Tex-Mex instrumentation with a genuinely psychedelic worldview. \nCo-written with and produced by Texas D.I.Y. innovator Bill Baird\, 15 tracks capture an astonishingly concise cultural history of the Alamo City’s contemporary outsiders and oddities. Bottling The 210 both lyrically and sonically\, the album features performances by Lone Star legends Joe “King” Carrasco\, Santiago Jiménez Jr.\, Rosie Flores\, Augie Meyers\, and Butthole Surfers’ Paul Leary. Released on March 10\, I Still Love San Antone is indeed the MOST PSYCHEDELIC TEX-MEX ALBUM OF ALL TIME. \nCapps will be performing in his SoLo RoBoTiKo setup for this show. Get ready to PARTY! \nPhoto credit: Josh Huskin

SUMMARY:The Santa Fe Symphony: Schubert & The Bells
DESCRIPTION:October is the perfect time for music with spooky and gothic origins. The concert opens with Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony\, a piece that proves a ghost’s unfinished business can be romantic and strikingly dramatic. Next is Saint-Saens’ Danse Macabre\, a tone poem depicting Death fiddling on Halloween as skeletons dance on their graves. To close the concert\, The Santa Fe Symphony Chorus\, under the direction of Carmen Flórez-Mansi\, and a trio of exceptional soloists join The Symphony to perform Rachmaninoff’s The Bells. Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem\, this choral work brings the fabled bells—sleigh\, wedding\, alarm\, and finally funeral—to life.

SUMMARY:Performance: A Cloud Of Blossoms Scatter In The Wind Together
DESCRIPTION:Performed by Nadine Lollino and dancers with live music\, this performance responds to the poetry and metaphors around the shared moments of beauty and bittersweet awareness of impermanence in nature. When people gather to observe these fleeting moments\, a momentary poignant connection occurs\, dissolving barriers just as the air filled with scattering blossoms creates a disorienting\, dreamlike space where the boundary of sky and earth dissolves. \nMovementLab is a contemporary dance collective dedicated to experimentation\, collaboration\, and site-responsive performance\, creating works that engage architecture\, landscape and community.
