SUMMARY:Opening Reception: 2666 Project
DESCRIPTION:The 2666 Project is a series of paintings made directly onto the pages of a physical paperback copy of Roberto Bolaño’s novel 2666. The book\, unfinished at the time of the author’s death\, is sprawling\, fragmented\, and deeply haunting. It moves through overlapping narratives of violence\, obsession\, academia\, and art\, which\, for me\, left behind a powerful sense of foreboding—hinting at something deeply troubling within our global economic policies and its impact on marginalized cultures. \nI have painted over every odd-numbered page\, for a total of 457 pages/paintings. My intention was not to create “illustrations” that directly match the narrative\, but to make work based on the impressions and emotional imprint the book left me with. By painting on every odd-numbered page of the book\, transforming the physical copy of the book into a continuous sequence and complete visual object. \nThe goal isn’t to explain or interpret 2666\, but to remain with the feeling it left behind. My intent is to create a standalone work layered onto a preexisting one—a transformation of a mass-produced object into something that stands on its own.

Inspired by decades of exploring the caminos and callejones of New Mexico and Colorado\, these paintings capture the journal entries of her wanderings. \nJoan grew up a free-range child in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado where her mother and grandmother had been born in the high mountain mining camps. She has called New Mexico home since the 1970s. She loves wandering back roads\, capturing villages and vistas in pixels and paint – always looking for the stories. An ancient tree\, a village chapel\, an old truck\, abandoned buildings or just a dramatic cloud formation catch her eye and become part of the image collection that holds negatives\, slides and digital images. Bits and pieces of various images may end up in the final painting. \nThe First Sunday ARTScrawl on June 7\, 10 am-2 pm\, will include a meet the artist segment as Joan shares the stories behind her images. Moving between observation and intervention\, the works trace how land is translated through systems of seeing\, acts of care\, material preservation\, and human impulse. Rather than presenting landscape as scenery\, the exhibition considers place as a record of contact and a site of ongoing relationship.

SUMMARY:Opening: Tiago Almeida: Memories of the Past That Hug Me in a Nest
DESCRIPTION:Institute of Contemporary Art Santa Fe presents Memories of the Past That Hug Me in a Nest\, a solo exhibition by Tiago Almeida\, on view June 14 through July 26\, 2026. \nA documentary filmmaker\, artist\, activist\, and initiate of Candomblé\, an Afro-Brazilian spiritual tradition\, Tiago Almeida’s work traces enduring African traditions in Brazil\, exploring Black sovereignty and the historical continuities that shape the present. \nIn Memories of the Past That Hug Me in a Nest\, Almeida brings together installation\, photography\, and documentary film to engage the intertwined histories of the coffee plantations of the Vale do Café and the forced displacement and labor of enslaved Africans. The exhibition examines how Candomblé has carried African cosmologies forward through community\, ceremony\, and systems of knowledge\, while tracing the ongoing suppression of African-matrix practices. \nRather than approaching these histories as fixed or resolved\, Almeida considers how spiritual and ancestral frameworks fold time\, keeping past and present in active relation. His work examines how knowledge persists under conditions of erasure\, moving through forms that are at once visible and withheld. \nOngoing public engagement extends these inquiries through workshops and gatherings led by Almeida and conversations with invited guests\, including activations of the installation (feeding the exhibition) and a workshop titled Against the Chaos. The installation moves between the formal conditions of ritual and art. Visitors are invited to stand at a threshold to witness and learn\, while remaining aware of the limits of their own access.

DESCRIPTION:Cara Romero Gallery\, located in the heart of downtown Santa Fe across from Vladem Contemporary\, kicks off the Santa Fe Summer Season with Than Pi\, a new exhibition of paintings by Mateo Romero\, on Thursday\, June 18\, with an opening reception from 5–8 p.m. \nThe exhibition includes 12 new paintings\, including five large-scale canvases. Romero’s heavily impastoed landscapes of Northern New Mexico and Pueblo scenes have earned him broad recognition over the course of his career. \n“I am deeply honored to invite you to a special exhibition at Cara Romero Gallery + Studio\, Says Cara\, — a solo presentation of new large-scale paintings by Mateo Romero\, one of the most significant and distinctive landscape painters working in the American Southwest today.” \nThe exhibition presents five monumental oil paintings—high-keyed\, richly textured\, and unmistakably his own—depicting landscapes sacred to the Puebloan people of New Mexico. Rooted in a deep painterly lineage as well as his life as an artist from Cochiti Pueblo\, Romero’s technique renders light and land with a presence felt as much as it is seen. Than Pi is the Tewa word for sunrise. \n“As Native people\, we are born into this world with an expectation that we will be participatory in life and contribute to society\,” says Romero. “What I have contributed most directly to life are my children and my art. Painting and drawing for me have always been urgent\, compelling\, and necessary. I make marks out of a need to communicate\, to contextualize\, to form meaning in the world around me.”

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of Wearing\, Wearing\, guest curated by Felicity Wong – the second of three exhibitions in Union Hall’s 2026 Rough Gems series! \nThe curator and many exhibiting artists will be in attendance. Light refreshments will be provided by Ratio Beerworks. Union Hall is a nonprofit art space and welcomes donations. \nCurated by Felicity Wong\, Wearing\, Wearing features six artists who employ strategies of abstraction\, repurposing\, amalgamation\, and deconstruction to investigate the relationships between clothing and decay. Embedded in histories of racial and colonial capitalism\, the garment industry has not only laid waste to our environments\, but also rendered garment laborers invisible\, dispensable\, and machine-like. Moving away from aspirations towards luxury fashion\, this exhibition asks how mundane\, cheap\, and dying garments can contribute to but also help us navigate landscapes of decay. SUMMARY:Opening: Broom Room Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, every culture has gathered fiber together and swept. Brooms\, brushes\, and sweeping are an intimate part of our collective domestic history\, and Julia Tait Dickenson proudly creates her pieces as an extension of that time-honored tradition. \nHer work showcases pieces that are both recognizable in their original form and strikingly transformed into something entirely new. Julia delights in finding discarded objects and discovering innovative ways to create brooms and brushes\, seamlessly incorporating traditional processes with found objects that have been used and feel good in the hand. \nThis exhibition highlights her recent experimentation with abstract ideas\, challenging both her own creativity and traditional confines to create new\, unexpected broom structures. Through this process\, she beautifully captures and preserves the feeling of an object’s original use while breathing new life into it. \nJulia lived in Santa Fe in the late 1980s and ’90s\, making her living as a jeweler\, before returning from Vermont in 2021 as a fiber artist and broom maker under her studio name\, Thinair Goods. We were honored to have Julia as an artist-in-residence here at El Zaguán until 2025.
