SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Raices in Color: New Paintings by Alejandra Montano
DESCRIPTION:Faust Gallery is pleased to present Raíces en Color\, a new exhibition by Tucson-based artist Alejandra Montaño\, opening Thursday\, April 9 with a reception from 6 to 9 PM at the gallery in Old Town Scottsdale. The exhibition celebrates Montaño’s deeply personal visual language—one shaped by family history\, Mexican cultural traditions\, and the vibrant landscapes of the American Southwest. \nRaíces en Color—which translates to “Roots in Color”—explores identity\, memory\, and heritage through Montaño’s unmistakable use of bold color and expressive brushwork. Drawing inspiration from her upbringing and cultural heritage\, the artist creates paintings that are both intimate and exuberant\, weaving together symbols\, figures\, and scenes that reflect the rhythms of everyday life and the enduring influence of family and place. \n“I paint what I come from—my culture\, my family\, and the memories that stay with me\,” says Montaño. “It has always been part of my life. It’s how I make sense of things\, and how I keep my family’s legacy alive.”

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Signal And Response
DESCRIPTION:RULE Gallery presents: Signal and Return\, two concurrent solo exhibitions featuring paintings by Joe Clower (1937–2024) and Polaroid works by the artist collaborative El Disco. Installed in adjacent galleries\, the exhibition explores the image as both instrument and event—simultaneously a signal transmitted outward and an encounter received in return. \nJoe Clower’s independent studio practice developed a visual language shaped by speculative architecture and idiosyncratic narrative. Working in watercolor and gouache\, Clower constructed scenes in which forms hover between assembly and invention. Drawing from classical scientific mechanisms\, comic-book imagery\, and a distinctly Western horizon\, his paintings compile improbable architectures and symbolic objects into systems of relation. Coils spiral around antennae\, forms extend atop plinths\, and structures appear poised as if awaiting transmission—suggesting environments where tension\, speculation\, and narrative coexist without assumed interpretation. \nIn parallel\, the exhibition presents a focused selection of Polaroids from El Disco’s expansive archive\, produced throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Inspired by observed phenomena\, El Disco formed in 1987 as a three-artist collaborative between Joe Clower\, Steve Thomsen\, and Michael Davey (Tennyson Woodbridge). More than documenting unusual objects in the sky\, El Disco’s Polaroids record the invisible tensions between belief\, environment\, and image\, blurring the line between witness and interpretation. The Polaroid process itself\, a chemistry of diffusion\, migration\, and time-released meaning\, echoes the shifting mystery of light and craft across Western horizons. \nTogether\, the two galleries trace an evolving alchemy of meaning and belief\, asking how both continue to reshape evidence long after the initial moment of exposure.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Two Faced. Three Faced. Four Faced. Five.
DESCRIPTION:Lydia Art Salon (formerly Lydia Street Gallery) presents “Two Faced. Three Faced. Four Faced. Five.” Billie Clarke\, Samir Faris\, Karim B. Hamid\, Monika Hardy\, William P. \nImmer April 3-May 17\, 2026 \nOpening reception: Thursday\, April 3rd\, 6-9 pm \ntwo faced. three faced. four faced. five.\n“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose\nBy any other word would smell as sweet.\nSo Romeo would\, were he not Romeo called\,\nRetain that dear perfection which he owes\nWithout that title. Romeo\, doff thy name\,\nAnd\, for thy name\, which is no part of thee\,\nTake all myself.” William Shakespeare / Romeo & Juliet\, Act 2\, scene 2 / circa 1595 \nIn the famous Shakespearean play ‘Romeo & Juliet’\, Juliet is not allowed to associate with Romeo because he is a Montague. If he had any other name it would be fine. But\, he doesn’t. She’s complaining that his name is meaningless. If the rose had any other name it would still be the same. So with Romeo; he would still be the same beautiful young man even if he had a different name. So\, as Juliet says: What IS in a name? Why is it so important to have a name? What do we associate with a name? Name’s are commonly known as associators. They are a way in which we\, as humans\, can define someone as other. Therefore\, we can determine a lot through a name. Of course\, we can associate it. But\, we can also control an identity to a certain extent. We can limit. We can arrange our thoughts and actions. We can also restrict ourselves. Why is it so important that we limit ourselves to a single name or identity? What is it about us that we allow ourselves to restrict ourselves to one identity?

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, HALEY GREENFEATHER ENGLISH: A HEAVY BIRDEN
DESCRIPTION:Greenfeather English is an artist of Red Lake and Turtle Mountain Ojibwe heritage known for her playful portraits and bold\, lively color palette. She was born and raised in Albuquerque\, New Mexico\, and earned her Bachelor’s of Fine Art at the Institute of American Indian Arts in 2018\, where she honed her skills in painting and printmaking and developed an artistic practice inspired by keen observation\, personal stories\, and memory\, challenging conventional understandings of reality influenced by western cultural perspectives. \nIn the artist’s own words\, A Heavy Birden is a show about long drives\, whimsy\, nostalgia\, love\, shadows\, clowns\, grief\, and birds. This unexpected assortment of concepts is characteristic of Greenfeather English’s practice—she is known for crafting startling juxtapositions that shift perceptions of the worlds she renders\, and of the tangible realities of day-to-day life. And while each element might seem discrete\, each plays an integral role in conjuring Greenfeather English’s world—one where whimsy and humor serve as teachers. \nWhen she’s not making art\, Greenfeather English can be found teaching children\, who\, she says\, have an organic ability to both make and appreciate art\, especially when it comes with a dose of humor. She hopes that her audiences will approach her work in the same way\, with a sense of levity and childlike wonder.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, KATE WOOD: VARIATIONS ON A THEME
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Albuquerque\, New Mexico\, and now living with her family in a rural mountain village on the High Road to Taos\, Wood is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in painting\, illustration\, and paper mache sculpture. She considers herself a play-based artist\, and her work explores themes of relationship\, family\, body language\, communication\, and the point at which personal experience transcends identity and becomes collective consciousness. Story and artifact are central to her artistic practice\, which employs a cast of glyphs rooted in archetype and mythology to construct visual narratives that invite viewers to find their own stories reflected in the work. \nWood’s work in Variations on a Theme is an expansion of her recent series of paintings\, A really good date I-IV\, which explore the idea of platonic intimacy through a sequence of interactions taking place between two dog-like figures. “I’ve been thematically curious about the bounds and limits of closeness and connection\, and what shape intimacy can take outside the constructs of romantic relationship\,” the artist says. Her new work deepens this original exploration\, isolating five pairs of dogs from the original series to illustrate what can develop from a single interaction. The resulting 26 new paintings rendered in ink and gouache are pattern-based mutations of the original pairing that\, for Wood\, express the infinite potential of human encounter\, relationship\, and love.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Lana Scholtz: Centrifuge
DESCRIPTION:smoke the moon presents Centrifuge\, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Lana Scholtz. The Albuquerque\, NM based artist will exhibit a suite of large scale\, saturated oil paintings on linen throughout smoke the moon’s main gallery space. Scholtz received an MFA in Painting from UNM in 2025. This is the artist’s debut solo show in Santa Fe. The works in Centrifuge are filled with layered vision\, the prismatic force of the universe on full display. \nA gravitational language with mysterious laws emerges in Scholtz’s paintings. Her scenes depict the helixed relationship between internal and external worlds. Objects yield toward an unknown center\, compelled by great forces. The center never holds\, and a kaleidoscopic system transforms recognizable structures into otherworldly terrains. The material research for Centrifuge traversed physics\, anatomy and the earth sciences. Scholtz’s paintings play within the phantasmic outer limits of the scientific world.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Hook\, Eye\, Mouth: Eleanor Aldrich\, Matthan Cowart\, Poppy DeltaDawn & Higinio Martinez
DESCRIPTION:smoke the moon present Hook\, Eye\, Mouth: a group show of work by Eleanor Aldrich\, Matthan Cowart\, Poppy DeltaDawn and Higinio Martinez in the casita gallery. This show brings together four artists working across painting\, sculpture and textile to ply the edges of form with an ecstatic gaze. Hook\, Eye\, Mouth presents work that boomerangs through the surface tension of reference\, craft and material inquiry. \nThough their studio practices encompass a vast arena of formal pursuits\, the four artists are united by their creative rigor. From punchy\, delicate weavings by Poppy DeltaDawn to the layered and hyper-saturated wall sculptures by Matthan Cowart\, the work in Hook\, Eye\, Mouth serves as absurdist scrolls. \nEach piece deifies its own reference: slogans\, discarded daily objects and children’s stories appearing in a flash and then morphing into something new and strange. Through a trove of reference each artist maintains their stylistic integrity; asking questions about what we know and how truth changes upon second glance. This show underscores the way that artists can serve as translators.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Cameo
DESCRIPTION:The University Art Museum is excited to present “Cameo”\, an interactive exhibition developed via collaboration between the NMSU Department of Art students and faculty\, the UAM\, and Portland-based visual artist Jamie Isenstein. The exhibition features a brand-new work by Isenstein\, “Still Life with Flowers” (2026)\, in her signature format: a sculptural performance showcasing parts of a living human body. \nA hand grips a bunch of flowers. Gleaming objects rest in a pool of light. A sheet of paper is crumpled by an invisible hand. Which of this is real? Which of this is fake? How can we trust what we see? These simple questions are at the root of art history and museums. And they are central to current debates about artificial intelligence and artificial general intelligence. This spring\, NMSU students and the University Art Museum’s broader community are invited to reflect on these ideas through an exhibition that playfully engages viewers as an essential part of the experience. “Cameo” opens March 27\, 2026 and will be on display through July 18\, 2026.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Darrah Blackwater Allocations: Self-Determination From Inside the Earth\, Outward
DESCRIPTION:ARTIST RECEPTION FRIDAY\, March 20\, 2026 | 5-7 PM | EXHIBITION IS ON VIEW THROUGH SATURDAY\, April 11\, 2026 AT HSFF’S EL ZAGUÁN\, 545 CANYON ROAD\, SANTA FE\, NEW MEXICO \nAllocations: Self-Determination From Inside the Earth\, Outward is Darrah Blackwater’s first solo show. Focusing on multiple facets of how United States laws and policies have impacted and affected the ability of Indigenous nations and Indigenous people to determine their lives and their futures\, this show focuses on the concept of spectrum sovereignty\, or the use and control of radio waves on tribal lands. \nThis issue epitomizes the importance of self-determination for Indigenous nations in the modern era\, as wireless communications affect the everyday lives of Americans\, including Indigenous people living on reservations. Similarly\, the Dawes Act\, the Indian Child Welfare Act and the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives are examples of how\, over centuries\, the United States has attempted or failed to acknowledge or protect the rights of Indigenous peoples through “allocations” of land\, children\, and respect. \nAllocations: From Inside the Earth Outward challenges the scarcity reality that colonization has imposed on Indigenous communities by examining the concept of different allocations of rights and resources the United States has made to Tribes and Indigenous people. Further\, this show raises the questions of who has the right to make these allocations to Indigenous nations\, and whether an allocation is. \nDarrah Blackwater is an artist and attorney\, originally from Farmington\, New Mexico. She is a citizen of the Navajo Nation\, and focuses much of her work on advocating for the rights of Indigenous people\, with an emphasis on Indigenous spectrum sovereignty\, or the right for Indigenous people to own and control radio waves on tribal lands. \nContact: Anne Kelly at anne@historicsantafe.org or call 505.983.2567 for more information.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception\, Full Circle: Valentine Viannayy
DESCRIPTION:Lapis Room’s first solo show of the 2026 season features mixed media artist\, Valentine Viannay. Originally from France\, Valentine came to America as a struggling artist. A friend helped her get a commission for a mural in San Diego and she instantly fell in love with California. She quickly realized that even though America hadn’t been the plan\, it was an opportunity she was given. \nThis show is a series of vignettes meant to capture key moments in the artist’s life since that initial mural: the adventure\, the growth\, the good and bad times (and the good and bad choices). The idea is to portray snapshots for each year since she immigrated to the States. \nThough Valentine’s journey is personal\, her hope is to make connections through the possibility of shared experience. Perhaps some of these pieces will resonate and help the viewer recall specific moments in their own lives. Through each piece\, she seeks to express the feelings – sometimes using symbolism\, sometimes a specific object or place – that help define her life and work here in America. The original plan was to come for three weeks—she stayed 25 years.
