DESCRIPTION:“Waking Up Was the Worst Idea?” presents fifteen intaglio prints that examine the psychological and political impact of religious propaganda\, censorship\, and authoritarian control in post-revolutionary Iran—especially as experienced by Iranian women. Through layered symbolism and a blend of surrealism with comic book aesthetics\, the series explores resistance\, memory\, identity\, and the emotional burden of awakening. By drawing on the visual language of American comics\, I invite viewers to a more accessible entry point where playfulness and critique coexist\, highlighting the surreal contradictions that women navigate under systemic restrictions. Masrour is in the Martin McDonald Hall Gallery from September 4 – October 31\, 2026.

SUMMARY:Percha Bank Exposition-a celebration of photographic art
DESCRIPTION:Rendezvous Southwest members invite you to the 5th annual photographic art exposition in the Historic Percha Bank Gallery. Photographers from across the Western United States have assembled and curated a unique collection of work. The work is firmly rooted in tradition while encouraging creativity that advances the boundaries of contemporary photography. The work represented includes processes such as cyanotypes\, platinum\, palladium\, lumens\, pigment ink\, gelatin silver\, synthetic collages\, hand-applied precious metals\, and pigments. The photographs are created with film cameras\, large format field cameras\, handmade cameras\, I-phones\, digital cameras or cameraless images.\nIn 1988 the first Photographer’s Rendezvous was held in the American West under the tutelage of Al Weber\, photographer\, and educator. In 2013 Rendezvous Southwest was formed to continue the tradition. Rendezvous Southwest members gather in Kingston\, New Mexico to exchange progressive and educational ideas in traditional\, digital\, experimental\, or alternative processes in order to promote the photographic art community.

SUMMARY:Max Lehman: Ancestral Androids
DESCRIPTION:For Max Lehman\, each sculpture begins with a story — some originate in dreams\, others in memories of childhood toys\, comics\, science fiction\, and machines that captured his imagination long before he understood how they worked. Those memories become intertwined with imagined histories until each piece feels less like something invented than something uncovered. “I resist providing complete explanations because archaeology rarely offers certainty\,” Lehman notes. “We reconstruct civilizations from fragments\, projecting ourselves into the spaces left empty by time.” These sculptures function in the same way — each viewer brings their own memories\, experiences\, and questions to the work\, completing stories that remain intentionally unfinished. “Ultimately\, Ancestral Androids is less about predicting the future than imagining its past\,” Lehman says. “The sculptures ask us to consider what happens when artificial beings become old enough to have ancestors\, old enough to leave ruins\, and old enough for their own history to become myth.”

SUMMARY:Thais Mather: Miss Universe
DESCRIPTION:The work featured in her upcoming show taps into that sense of infinite space conjured by grief and the strength of imagination in a series of watercolor paintings depicting female forms through which viewers can catch a glimpse of the expanse of the cosmos. Its title — Miss Universe — plays a dual role\, evoking the hyper-feminine performance of pageant queens and hinting at the feminine connection to the eternal. \nMather’s paintings bring the viewer along on this journey\, offering a window into the illimitable and inviting her audience to probe what may lie in the deepest voids within themselves. “To anyone who feels broken\, let yourself break all the way open — for the light\, the space\, the person who emerges is who you truly are\,” Mather says. “Being at the edge of yourself\, you see there is an entire other horizon you would have never otherwise found.”

The exhibition highlights Doyle’s distinctive approach to capturing the iconic Aspen groves of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains through rich color\, simple graphic lines\, and dynamic energy.\nThis focused body of work stems from Doyle’s 30-year personal tradition of making annual spring and autumn treks into the local high country. \n“Aspen trees in the southern Rockies are a classic subject for many painters and photographers\,” says Doyle. “I have been making annual spring and fall visits to our Aspen groves in the Sangre de Cristos for 30 years. It is a tradition of beauty\, solitude\, and crisp mountain air. This collection of watercolors is my approach to capturing the energy of these living communities with simple graphic lines and rich colors.” \nWorking in a deep\, vibrant key\, Doyle challenges traditional watercolor boundaries by pushing for saturated tones\, structural balance\, and fine craftsmanship. Using the traditional beaded broadcloth found in Osage regalia\, Alex Ponca Stock considers a broad array of modern and historical references\, including color field painting\, early Christian heresies\, ancient mound-builders\, and quantum physics. The result of her experimentation with larger-scale work\, this exhibition is a mature showcase of Ponca Stock’s ability to visually dissect the currents of 21st century life.

SUMMARY:Opening: I’ve Had an Out of Body Experience: Ephemeral Structures and The Human Displacement of Hemisfair 1968
DESCRIPTION:In I’ve Had an Out of Body Experience\, San Antonio-based artist Ann Enzminger examines the physical and cultural aftermath of Hemisfair 1968\, the international exposition that transformed the center of San Antonio. Conceived as a celebration of progress and international exchange\, the fair also required the removal of an existing residential neighborhood and the displacement of the people who lived there. \nThrough painting\, fiber\, mapping\, and sculptural forms\, Enzminger considers what happens to a place when its physical traces are removed but its history remains. The exhibition focuses on the tension between the temporary structures of a World’s Fair and the lasting consequences of the redevelopment that made them possible. Hemisfair was designed to create a vision of San Antonio’s future\, yet much of what preceded it was treated as something that could be erased. \nEnzminger approaches this history through fragments\, repetition\, accumulation\, and reconstruction. Rather than attempting to recreate the displaced neighborhood literally\, she uses artistic processes to consider how places survive through memory\, documentation\, and imagination. Maps become both records and abstractions; repeated forms suggest the persistence of what has been removed; and humble\, tactile materials point to the physical labor involved in constructing—and reconstructing—a sense of place. \nThe exhibition also considers the strange afterlife of World’s Fair architecture. Built to project an image of a modern\, forward-looking city\, many of Hemisfair’s structures were intended to be temporary. Their impermanence contrasts with the lasting consequences experienced by the neighborhood displaced to make way for them. \nNearly six decades after Hemisfair opened\, I’ve Had an Out of Body Experience revisits this history from the present\, asking what cities choose to preserve\, what they allow to disappear\, and how contemporary art might make visible the people and places obscured by narratives of civic progress.

Attend the opening reception Saturday\, October 3\, 5 to 8 p.m.\, when guests can meet the artist and enjoy the artist’s talk starting at 6:30 p.m. \nTrained as an architect and internationally recognized as an architectural illustrator\, Archway artist Maksim Koloskov brings his unique perspective to the urban landscape—one that balances structure with emotion\, precision with spontaneity\, and observation with memory. His work invites viewers to slow down and rediscover the beauty hidden within familiar environments: The changing light on a downtown façade\, the quiet reflections of a harbor\, the rhythm of pedestrians moving through a city\, or the atmosphere of a distant street in Spain. Each work reflects a keen eye for atmosphere\, light\, and human connection\, transforming ordinary scenes into extraordinary visual experiences. \nSUPERMALEVICH: The Poetry of Place features a body of work that is both deeply personal and universally relatable—a visual journey that carries the viewer through cities\, landscapes\, and human experience. \nMost of the exhibit’s works are watercolors painted en plein air on the streets of Houston and Galveston or on his recent travels to Spain and Japan. A prolific sketcher\, Koloskov carries his sketchbook and pen at all times. “I always find a moment to sketch something that catches my eye\,” he comments.

Disney Performing Arts Center at the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, 1701 4th St SW Albuquerque\, NM 87102 \nAbout the artist: Jesus Miguel Avena is a Mestizo\, Queer Mexican American oil painter and ceramicist based in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. His work explores identity\, embodiment\, and cultural hybridity through visual storytelling informed by Mesoamerican mythologies\, Indigenous philosophies\, and the concept of Nepantla — an in between space of transformation. Moving between painting and clay\, Avena creates figurative works and ceramic objects that examine memory and layered Mexican American histories. He earned degrees from Santa Fe Community College (2022) and the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA\,2024). Avena has exhibited nationally\, participated in the Venice Biennale through an IAIA–Marist partnership\, and currently serves as Visiting Assistant Professor of Ceramics at IAIA while preparing to pursue an MFA.

Disney Performing Arts Center at the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, 1701 4th St SW Albuquerque\, NM 87102 \nAbout the artist: claudia hermano (they/them) is a trans non-binary Filipino American artist and educator working primarily in photography\, with a practice that extends into book arts\, sculpture\, and performance. Their work explores the intersections of embodiment\, belonging\, and representation\, with a focus on queer\, fat\, and mixed-race identities. hermano was born in New York and spent their childhood moving between New York\, California\, Texas\, and Massachusetts. They hold a BA in Photography from Hampshire College and an MFA in Studio Art from the University of New Mexico. They currently reside in Albuquerque\, NM on unceded Tewa land. They work at the University of New Mexico as a graduate studios manager and adjunct faculty member.
