DESCRIPTION:Institute of Contemporary Art Santa Fe presents Woven Futures\, Unbound Patterns: Contemporary Diné Weaving\, an exhibition bringing together weavers across generations to foreground weaving as a living\, evolving practice. \nCurated by Venancio Aragón\, with organizational support from Chiara Giovando and Tony Abeyta\, the exhibition approaches weaving as a site of ongoing experimentation and critical engagement. Developed in dialogue with artists\, lenders\, and institutional partners\, the exhibition includes works from renowned contemporary weavers including Irveta Aragón\, Venancio Aragón\, DY Begay\, Theresea Bowman\, Melissa Cody\, Calandra L. Cook\, Dolores W. Grey\, Marlowe Katoney\, Vera Myers\, Mary Lou Schultz\, Steiner Cody\, Tyrrell Tapaha\, and Calvin Toney. Works made by students from the weaving department at Diné College in Tsaile\, Navajo Nation (Diné Bikéyah) will also be displayed alongside loans from the School for Advanced Research and the Tia Collection\, bringing historic and contemporary works into direct conversation\, tracing a lineage across time. \nMoving beyond historical frameworks shaped by trading posts\, static ethnographic framings\, and external narratives\, the exhibition centers weaving as a practice led by the weavers themselves. Diné weaving emerges as an active site of innovation\, where material\, pattern\, and process carry forward complex cultural\, social\, and aesthetic lineages. Works by established artists are shown alongside students\, positioning emerging weavers as continuations and expansions of Diné knowledge systems\, working within and against inherited forms.

DESCRIPTION:Autumn Chacon’s experimental noise opera returns this summer\nJoin us for a screening of MALINXE\, whose New Mexico debut was performed outdoors as part of the 12th SITE SANTA FE International: Once Within a Time. This screening is an opportunity to finally experience the haunting\, multilayered performance—the first time for most of our audience\, as the original live shows were immediately sold out. Artist Autumn Chacon (Diné – Navajo/Chicana) will participate in a discussion with SITE SANTA FE Curator Brandee Caoba after the screening. \nIn an original opera\, Autumn Chacon and Laura Ortman (White Mountain Apache) examine La Malinche\, the real Nahua woman deemed the mother of modern Mexican people. Her complex story is often equated with that of La Llorona\, or “the weeping woman.” In this interpretation\, “Malinxe” embodies a contemporary woman who submerges into La Llorona’s dangerous realm and must make transformative decisions to save her spirit from continuing down the destructive path of La Llorona.

DESCRIPTION:Wild Hearts Gallery in Placitas invites the public to a reception on August 15\, 1-3 pm to meet Photographer\, Dana Patterson Roth and talk about her show: The River Runs Through Me\, Exhibit runs from August 4 – 30. \nThe River Runs Through Me photo encaustics combine photographs\, hot wax\, pigments\, and markings to create a painterly view of the visual world. Dana Patterson Roth has photographed various bodies of water in New Mexico\, seeking to convey the beauty and peace they bring her\, while also recognizing the effects that long term drought is having on them. Even as they dry and shrink there is beauty to be seen and comfort to be felt. \nMeet the artist on August 8 for a demonstration of photo encaustic techniques between 11 am and 1 pm. She will layer hot beeswax and pigments onto a photograph\, building up some areas and scraping away others to emphasize some aspects of the photograph and eliminate others. \nDespite growing up in New Mexico\, she was shaped by water and her mother’s love of swimming. Lakes\, rivers\, ditches or puddles\, New Mexico’s waters defined Dana and found her always swimming\, boating\, playing in or just being soothed by looking at and photographing water. As these waters face an uncertain future\, it feels urgent to honor both the joy they’ve given and the loss we are experiencing. \nWild Hearts Gallery is an artists’ collective\, supported by 14 local artists. SUMMARY:Pueblo Independence Day
DESCRIPTION:Jemez Historic Site in Jemez Springs\, New Mexico\, will host its annual celebration for Pueblo Independence Day. The celebration begins early Sunday morning with a 13-mile run from the plaza in Jemez Pueblo up Highway 4 to Jemez Historic Site. The run symbolizes the efforts made by runners over three centuries prior bringing word of the Pueblo Revolt to far-flung pueblos. Beginning at 10 a.m.\, visitors will have the opportunity to see traditional Pueblo-style dances and shop arts\, crafts\, and food vendors. Additionally\, visitors can tour Gisewa Pueblo\, an ancestral site of the present-day Jemez Pueblo\, and San José de los Jémez Mission. \nPueblo Independence Day commemorates the anniversary of the Pueblo Revolt on August 10\, 1680. That day\, Pueblo people joined one another in rebelling against Spanish colonizers. The revolt was organized and led by Po’Pay\, a leader from Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo. Runners were sent to each pueblo with a knotted cord\, with each knot representing one day. The morning run symbolizes those efforts made by runners more than three centuries ago. When the last knot was unraveled\, it was time for the uprising to begin. The Pueblo Revolt\, which was the only successful revolt by Indigenous peoples in the Americas against a colonizing power\, forced the Spanish out of present-day New Mexico south to what is now El Paso\, Texas. The Pueblo people maintained their independence for the next twelve years until the Spanish returned and reestablished a permanent presence in the region in 1692. The collaboration supports the visibility and viability of SURFACE alumni while creating new pathways for emerging creative voices. \nAt the center of this exhibition is inaugural curatorial fellow Jakia Fuller\, who will lead guests through Route 66: A Deep Imagining\, featuring work by Christian Gallegos\, Ben Roe Jr.\, and Jen H. Doolittle. \nAs the centennial of Route 66 approaches\, the exhibition turns away from the familiar mythology of the Mother Road and toward the stories that linger beneath\, beside\, and beyond it. Through explorations of place\, collective consciousness\, and lived experience\, the artists consider the narratives that may have coincided with this historic passage—and those still unfolding along its path. \nMoving between past\, present\, and imagined futures\, Route 66: A Deep Imagining asks audiences to look again at a road so often reduced to nostalgia. Jakia’s guided walkthrough invites guests deeper into the exhibition’s connections\, tensions\, and possibilities\, creating space to consider Route 66 not simply as a road\, but as a layered landscape shaped by memory\, environment\, movement\, and human experience.

DESCRIPTION:SITE SANTA FE invites you to tell a story about the messiest version of yourself in our adults-only (21+ event) comic strip workshop (we’ll keep it rated PG)! \nHere’s your chance to express your confused\, ambitious\, self-defeating\, shame-filled\, anxiety-riddled\, knee-jerk self-destructive\, pleasure-seeking\, anti-hero self in artistic form. \nBased on Walter Scott’s cult graphic novel series\, Wendy\, which chronicles the exploits of his alter ego (the titular Wendy)\, our open table workshop will offer prompts and materials to inspire stories of you at your worst— with a twist of redemption offering an opportunity to showcase you at your very best. \nWalter Scott’s Wendy comics are featured in Indian Theater: Native Performance\, Art\, and Self-Determination since 1969\, curated by Candice Hopkins and presented at SITE SANTA FE\, June 5–September 7\, 2026. \nEnjoy art-making with a glass of wine\, beer\, and a slice of cheese. Ortiz will discuss the most recent iteration of the project\, Continuum: Blindfall\, First Strike\, on view at the Vladem Contemporary until October 18\, 2026. SUMMARY:Blue Heartstrings
DESCRIPTION:Archway Gallery is pleased to present Blue Heartstrings\, an exhibit featuring new paintings by Katherine Rodgers—on view September 5 through October 1\, 2026. This exhibit features watercolor works of mammals\, birds\, and fish\, painted mostly in blue. Rodgers is donating a portion of the proceeds to the nonprofit organization\, HeartGift\, which brings children from around the world to the United States where they are provided life-saving surgery to correct congenital heart defects. Attend the opening reception Saturday\, September 12\, 5 to 8 p.m.\, when guests can meet the artist and enjoy the artist’s talk starting at 6:30 p.m. \nRodgers is dedicating her show to her sister\, Laura\, who was born in 1972 with a condition called tetralogy of fallot. One of the first babies to be operated on by Dr. Denton Cooley in Houston\, sadly she passed away after the surgery at the age of almost three. But her short life left an impact on her family. Trying to understand her death led Rodgers to study medicine and become a nurse. Babies with heart defects are often referred to “blue babies” due to poor blood perfusion that happens when the heart does not pump properly. “Therefore\,” explains Rodgers\, “in Laura’s memory\, I am painting a gallery-worth of animals mostly in blue and calling the show Blue Heartstrings.“ \nPredominantly a self-taught painter\, Rodgers’ work is deeply inspired by nature and the world around her. Since returning to Houston in 2022\, she has devoted herself to teaching watercolor to students of all levels at the Watercolor Art Society of Houston.
