Workshop A: Printmaking: SAR Humanities Festival

September 20, 9:00 am12:00 pm MDT
$165

Fourth Dimension print studio is offering two introductory monotype workshops in conjunction with the SAR Humanities Festival-presented artist talk by Edgar Heap of Birds. Participants will learn techniques for creating bold and expressive monotypes of their own. In theme with Edgar’s talk about his recent “Wichita” series and the SAR Humanities Festival, participants are asked to reflect on places that have greatly impacted their lives and produce a monotype that embodies their reflections.

The workshops will begin with a demonstration by Conor after which the participants will create their own original prints, with assistance from the instructor and work concept guidance from Paloma Lopez, Education Manager, SAR Indian Arts Research Center. As each participant finishes working on their plate, Conor will help with printing.

One of the techniques the workshop will focus on is viscosity printing. The viscosity technique is a way of layering ink that will mix or reject depending on the amount of plate oil mixed into the ink. Layers of ink are applied to a plexiglass plate with incrementally increasing amounts of oil to allow any color to be rolled on top of another without blending or mixing into the layer underneath. Any areas of the plexiglass that are not covered with low viscosity ink will retain the high viscosity ink, allowing both colors to sit side-by-side on the same plate without multiple passes through the press.
