Women in the House
June 3, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Fifty years ago a house slated for demolition hosted a groundbreaking art event: Womanhouse. In celebration of this seminal project, Turner Carroll Gallery is proud to present Women in the House, an exhibition of female artists across the generations and featuring original Womanhouse collaborators Judy Chicago and Nancy Youdelman. Youdelman will be giving an artist talk at Turner Carroll Gallery at the exhibition opening at 6 pm, June 3, 2022.
Women in the House will include artworks by Mildred Howard whose sculpture, collage, and found object artworks engage with her experience as an African American woman, Hung Liu whose humanist portraits portray the historical experience of women from sex workers to female soldiers, Monica Lundy whose portraits capture the funneling of women through institutional systems in the early twentieth century, Jeanette Pasin Sloan whose jawdropping, still life painting skills of domestic objects were honed in her kitchen in the 1970s after she put her young children to bed, Swoon who broke into the male-dominated street art scene of New York twenty years ago and who continues to make portraits subjects across the gender spectrum, and original Womanhouse participants Judy Chicago and Nancy Youdelman.
We are proud to offer this complimentary programming along with the Through the Flower Foundation which will offer a two-pronged celebration of Womanhouse: a historical exhibition at the Through the Flower Artspace in Belen and a contemporary version of Womanhouse in a nearby house. Both Through the Flower Foundation shows will open on June 18, 2022, and run through the summer.
In centering and uplifting the female experience Women in the House is a celebration of how far we have come and a rededication to the lengths we still need to travel toward gender equality and inclusivity in the arts and the broader American culture.
