Enameling is the ancient art of sifting colored, powdered glass onto metal and fusing it under the heat of a torch or kiln. Originally developed by the Persians, artists through the ages continue to find new way to express themselves through its versatility. The technique, a fascinating blend of science and art, will produce unusual, unique and colorful jewelry and décor.

This introduction to enameling on copper will cover the basics, from learning about the specialized tools and equipment and safe working methods, to application techniques and firing. We’ll start with some color test samples then make a refrigerator magnet, move on to earrings using a blow torch and end with a shallow bowl using the kiln. Whether you’re a seasoned metalsmith who has never worked with enamels, or new to all things metal, this class will provide a solid foundation upon which to expand your skill set. Open to students of any level–beginners welcome.
