Exhibition opening: Friday, July 15, 10:30-1 pm
The goal of the exhibition is to educate the public about the need for New Mexico to be included in the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA). New Mexico was the site of the first, most radioactive, bomb in the world, Trinity. Even though we were unwitting participants in this atomic experiment, New Mexico has never been included in RECA. The states of Arizona, Utah, Colorado and Nevada have all been included in RECA and New Mexico is still conspicuously left out. The efforts of the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium in unison with many other organizations have received widespread support for including New Mexico in RECA. The exhibition will include thirty art pieces by seventeen artists primarily from affected communities. The exhibition offers the perspectives and insights into the effects of nuclear accidents and uranium mining on people, animals, and the environment of New Mexico. RECA legislation sunsets permanently in 2024 if we are not successful passing US SB1751 and HB4426.
