Shar Coulson: Traces

Nüart Gallery presents Traces, an exhibition featuring new work by Shar Coulson. The exhibition will run June 30 through July 16, 2023 with an opening reception on Friday, June 30, 5-7 pm.

Traces presents a magnetic interplay between emotional vulnerability and artistic fortitude as Shar Coulson continues to cultivate her gestural interpretation of the natural world. Inhabiting the space between wind and water and flora and fauna, primal traces branch and hold undulating forms recognizable as both familiar shapes and layers of tactile color relinquished to abstraction. The real and ideal merge in these verdant compositions, where channels of dense tones from the outside world coarse over and around intersecting elements, webbed drips, and diffused pigmentation. An environment simultaneously entwines and separates in the work, where transparency of the organic world superimposes the mystery of our inner sensitivities.

In these rhythmic compositions, Coulson enters a fluid state of creation, where emerging from the blank canvas are beautifully harnessed juxtapositions such as Tender Frenzy, Tranquil Friction, and Rhythmic Resilience. The visible intricacies in these spirited, far-reaching paintings reward wandering through and discovering a multitude of complementary perspectives.

Shar Coulson’s work reflects her love of nature. She was formally trained in classical figurative realism, yet finds her passion runs deepest in the world of abstraction. Shar exhibits both nationally and internationally. She lives and works in Chicago.
