Appelquist’s approach to painting comes from being an architect, loving to draw, and from enjoying color.
He uses oil sticks which are like large crayons that contain oil paint. An underpainting is created which is a composition of colors and then while it is still wet, he goes over it with another layer of paint leaving curved linear shapes in a design that reveals the colors below. This recent work has become figurative with recognizable humans and landscape features.
