Opening Reception: The Silent Opera – A Cautionary Tale

The Mad Hatter Gallery’s January exhibition is The Silent Opera – A Cautionary Tale, on view from January 3-29, with an artist reception, January 3, 5-8 pm.

“The Silent Opera” is a cautionary tale about the abuse of power, vengeance, and provincial choices. Using a collection of photographic montages, animated videos, operatic vignettes, and archetypal characters, Las Cruces artist Barbara Houghton, questions what is proper and appropriate behavior and what is unethical and harmful.

Barbara Houghton, a native of Chicago, earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois Chicago and her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After a four-decade career as an art professor at two universities, she moved to Las Cruces in 2022.
