SURFACE is an annual juried exhibition, endowed awards and professional development program presented by Harwood Art Center, to support the creative and professional growth of emerging artists and to expand their visibility and viability in our community. We have received hundreds of noteworthy submissions over ten application cycles to-date; as of this year, the program has served 127 exceptionally talented, committed artists, including the ten we accepted for 2023.

This year’s SURFACE exhibition in Harwood’s Hall Gallery features Carrie Botto, Petra Brown, Monika Guerra, Allison Jones Hunt, Leviathan O’Neil, Leigh Oviatt, Louie Perea, Rocío Rodriguez, Row Särkelä and Zuyva Sevilla.

Cortney YellowHorse-Metzger received the SURFACE Harwood Art Center Solo Exhibition Award in 2022, presented annually for artistic excellence, originality of vision and dedication to practice; this year, her awarded solo exhibition Theh-wah-ho^ Pah-hun^-leh Kah-xah Be (Keep Respect for Your People First) will run concurrently in Harwood’s Front Gallery.

We invite you to join us for an exhibition reception, awards presentation and an artist talk by Cortney YellowHorse-Metzger at Harwood Art Center, Saturday, June 24. The reception is 57 pm with awards and artist talks starting at 5:30 pm. This event is free and open to all ages.
