Sculptor Ken Smith, Reception with the Artist: A Stone Odyssey – 8 decades on…, Friday, June 2, 5-7pm at Aurelia Gallery, 414 Canyon Road, Santa Fe
This retrospective showcases eight decades of Ken’s work in marble, limestone, soapstone, alabaster, and bronze.
Ken Smith creates rhythms of light and dark with his pieces, and he couples these with stimulating, sometimes disturbing themes. His “outstretched hand” motif invites viewers to share in his art. He prefers to work in stone as a direct carver of marble, limestone, soapstone, and/or alabaster. He started early in his life as an artist, in New York City, in the Bronx. His curiosity prompted him to bypass two scholarships, at two prestigious art schools, and join the Navy to see the world. Eventually, he went on to college and became a physician and a surgeon. He practiced plastic and reconstructive surgery until 1998. Along the way, about thirty years ago, he began to sculpt stone and other media. Ken has worked in terra cotta, wood, and bronze, but always preferred to work in stone. In 1996 he had a life changing experience after spending a month carving stone in Pietrasanta, a little town in Italy, on the coast of northern Tuscany.
Art aficionados describe his art form as expressionistic figurative sculpture.
