Round Table: Women in Collage

SWC Exhibition

September 24, 2020 @ 6:00 pm

Lynn Hershman Leeson began adding sound to her two-dimensional work in the early 1960s, effectively redefining what art could be. Leeson’s experience follows a long history of women redefining art, reshaping what it means to be an artist, only to be told at one point or another, “You are not an artist” or “That is not art.” We can see this dynamic play out in the history of collage in those who date the origins of the medium in 1912 when Picasso and Braque embraced it, negating over a century of women deeply engaged with the medium. Join 516 ARTS and Kolaj Institute for a Women in Collage Round Table led by Dafna Steinberg. Steinberg will be discussing collage and individual practices as they relate to the artists’ femininity with Lory Ivey Alexander (Washington, DC), Ainize Txopitea (Guipuzcoa, Spain), Lisa Wicka (Green Bay, Wisconsin), and Marie-Pier Lopes (aka ZEPOL, Montreal, Canada). The formal conversations will be followed by a free-form hangout where women, femme and non-binary artists working in collage are invited to share their experiences and discuss the themes raised by the speakers.

Free livestream.
