Performance: Cthulha | Your Bones or Your Bass
January 12 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm$5 – $25
Albuquerque’s experimental music/movement project Cthulha celebrates the release of her music video “Your Bones or Your Bass” with an evening of music paired with aerial dance.
The term renaissance woman could not be a more fitting title for multi-disciplinary artist, dancer and musician Monica Demarco, a.k.a. Cthulha. Known by Matron Records fans as a member of Albuquerque’s experimental “insect-glam-metal” outfit Chicharra, Demarco draws from her diverse creative outputs to craft the multi-faceted solo project Cthulha. Part music and part performance art, Cthulha combines Demarco’s background as a classical composer and contemporary noise artist with her movement work as an aerial dancer and martial artist to build a dual visual/sonic language that digs deep into human ritual, science fiction and magical realism. Her music varies wildly from her experience as a virtuoso pianist with a love of barbarism to her work in contemporary rock and experimental noise, crafting songs with cello, bass, piano, vocals and a variety of electronics.
Matron Records will release Cthulha’s forthcoming album in February 2019, Always Who You Were, a collection of piano-driven, experimental songs that each reimagine Demarco’s personal experiences to tell stories of women transforming into new creatures, each transcending perceived reality. In advance of the album release, Matron Records releases the music video/dance piece “Your Bones or Your Bass” on January 9th.
To celebrate the release of “Your Bones or Your Bass” and further explore the connection between movement and sound that is at the heart of Cthulha, Matron Records, and Form & Concept present an evening of music performance paired with aerial dance. The show will feature one-time collaboration from local musicians Cthulha (Albuquerque), Bigawatt (Albuquerque), Ryan Dennison (Albuquerque), Jessie Deluxe (Santa Fe) and Scissor Lift (Santa Fe) with Albuquerque aerial dancers Cortney Baca, Johanna Furgal, Christina Caveleri and Kristen Woods.
