Paintings and Poetry: The Center Cannot Hold
February 3, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Paintings and Poetry: The Center Cannot Hold features the work of Jane Shoenfeld and Bill Sortino. The exhibition opens February 3, 2022 from 5 to 7 pm. Masks are required.
These two diverse contemporary artists offer a showcase of paintings imbued with a deep connection to poetry. “This is such an exciting show that will resonate with artists and poets alike,” said Director of the Visual Arts Gallery, Linda Cassel. “While the artists are quite different, they both are so gifted and dedicated to immersing themselves in the full artistic process of painting, as well as writing poetry.” About this exhibit, Shoenfeld states: I was first invited to show this body of work at SFCC in 2019. The pandemic intervened. Since then the exhibit has transformed into a collaboration between Bill Sortino and myself. We are both giving life to worlds of images and images in words. For several years, I’ve created art in response to phrases from Yeats’ 1919 poem “The Second Coming.” Sadly, Yeats’ dark and symbolic vision remains relevant as we confront a pandemic and climate change. I also will be exhibiting paintings (and accompanying poetry) in response to my own writing. Bill will be exhibiting a new body of work for this show along with his poems that provide an alternative view into his visual art. “
