Christa Stephens + Christine Sullivan: WOMEN’S WORK, Stitching, Collage and Fiber: Quilt + Like A Girl
opening reception: November 16, 5-8 pm
ongoing exhibition: -January 19, 2025
A celebration of art forms long associated with women’s creative labor, once dismissed as “too decorative” or “not serious enough” for fine art, yet now celebrated in the contemporary art world.
Artists Christa Stephens and Christine Sullivan emphasize that “women’s work” encompasses artists of all genders who work in these traditionally feminized mediums. Through this exhibition, they aim to expand the dialogue on how these art forms are perceived and valued, acknowledging their evolution and celebrating their place in the realm of “high art”.
Stephens will present her intricate Quilt series: a colorful collection of contemporary mixed-media works reminiscent of the quilts that have defined generations of creative work by women.
Sullivan will debut a monochrome felt text series, Like A Girl, an exploration of reclaiming labels (like “bitch”, “diva”, and others) historically used to dismiss women.
This exhibition comes in the wake of Kamala Harris’s presidential loss, and the artists hope it will inspire women and marginalized groups to persevere in pursuing their aspirations, emphasizing that history is long and change is continuous.
