Opening: Mesas, Memories, and Meditations: Paul Milosevich and Jeff F. Wheeler

No Man’s Land Gallery is pleased to present Mesas, Memories, and Meditations: Paul Milosevich & Jeff F. Wheeler. Although separated by a generation and their styles seemingly disparate both artists have left an indelible mark on the Lubbock, Texas art scene. Paul Milosevich (Santa Fe, New Mexico) and Jeff F. Wheeler (San Antonio, Texas) spent a good part of their formative years making art in the Hub City (Lubbock).

Several years ago, Wheeler made a pilgrimage to meet his childhood hero, Milosevich, at his studio in Santa Fe. They became fast friends, discovering many overlapping interests and inspirations. The artists came upon one recurring subject that appears in both of their works, the mountain. In the vein of Paul Cezanne’s Mont-Sainte Victoire and Georgia O’Keeffe’s Cerro Pedernal, this exhibit features works by Milosevich and Wheeler that take iconic mountains as their subject. Time and again Milosevich has painted Fisher’s Peak, the prominent mesa that overlooks his boyhood home in Trinidad, Colorado. Wheeler pays homage to O’Keeffe and Cézanne, often traveling to the exact spots they sat to record his versions of the now iconic views.
