Artist Studio Open House: Sculptor Ken Smith
Saturday July 15, 2023, 11-3 pm at Passionate Stone Studio. All other times Passionate Stone Studio is open by appointment only. Please contact Aurelia Gallery at 505-501-2915 to make an appointment.

This retrospective showcases eight decades of Ken Smith’s work in marble, limestone, soapstone, alabaster, and bronze: expressionistic figurative sculpture.

Ken Smith creates rhythms of light and dark with his pieces, and he couples these with stimulating, sometimes disturbing themes. His “outstretched hand” motif invites viewers to share in his art. He prefers to work in stone as a direct carver of marble, limestone, soapstone, and/or alabaster. He started early in his life as an artist, in New York City, in the Bronx. His curiosity prompted him to bypass two scholarships, at two prestigious art schools, and join the Navy to see the world. Eventually, he went on to college and became a physician and a surgeon. He practiced plastic and reconstructive surgery until 1998. Along the way, about thirty years ago, he began to sculpt stone and other media. Ken has worked in terra cotta, wood, and bronze, but always preferred to work in stone. In 1996 he had a life changing experience after spending a month carving stone in Pietrasanta, a little town in Italy, on the coast of northern Tuscany.
