New Works by Mikayla Patton
May 6, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

For Mikayla Patton (Oglala Lakota) making paper by hand is “transformative and poetic.” “It’s become my personal ritual,” Patton says, “breaking down fibrous materials, submerging them into water, sifting the pulp with mesh screens, then pressing it between used bed sheets, then watching it dry.” Her upcoming show at Hecho Gallery, and the first solo exhibition in the gallery, will feature three bodies of work. Patton’s latest creations are on handmade paper, stitched with glass beads and porcupine quills. These will be accompanied by a small installation of boxes, also fashioned from handmade paper, which Patton completed during a year-long residency in Roswell, New Mexico. Lastly, the show will feature lithograph prints from her collaboration with Santa Fe-based Black Rock Press.
