Matt Magee: Random Order
February 26, 2021
Zane Bennett Contemporary Art is delighted to announce Random Order by American conceptual and experimental artist Matt Magee. The show, officially opening on Friday, February 26, marks the first solo exhibition of Magee’s work at the gallery, and features a selection of predominantly never-before-seen pieces focusing on the artist’s ongoing interest in playful permutations of bold forms and repurposed, unconventional materials.
Magee’s use of non-traditional materials (such as found plastic bottles, aluminum cans and mica) may suggest a relinquishing of control, but steady intention and precision forms the backbone of his practice. While inspiration from painters and sculptors of the 1950s and 1960s are important to Magee’s practice, a highly idiosyncratic system of meaning drawn from personal history and gestural exploration is at its heart. The artist explains “Language is fluid and as I continue to explore various media, including social media, to excavate meaning and assess the temperature of the moment, objects and paintings emerge.” In this new body of work, Magee underscores this fact through the diversity of his materials.
