We are honored to invite you to a very special gallery opening we’ve been working on for Meow Wolf Co-Founder Matt King. The title of the show is Matt King: Becoming Light, opening Friday, September 8 at 5 pm at CONTAINER by Turner Carroll in Santa Fe, curated by his partner Han Santana-Sayles.
Matt was the visionary behind many of our most iconic installations and his ethos of empowering individuals through creative expression continues to guide our work—his influence on Meow Wolf is ineffable. When Matt passed, he was creating a large body of personal artwork that included paintings, sculptures, and custom neon work.
Matt King: Becoming Light is an exploration of Matt the artist: a profoundly significant figure in the trajectory of immersive installation art history. It’s also the tender journey of his community processing our grief by building a bold vision of his sculptural work with sketches he left behind.
Matt was obsessed with exploring the range of the visible light spectrum: he created light through the arduous practice of neon bending, then married these sculptural pieces with the bright, explosive color palettes of his paintings. His paintings are a map of his being: relentlessly optimistic, chaotic, layered, filled with kaleidoscopic mazes. He held a singular desire to convey the vastness of his inner landscape through artwork on his path to grappling with infinity.
Matt returned to the infinity he was exploring far too soon. He became a beautiful prism of light himself: we saw him when the sky opened in double rainbows every day for weeks following his death. This body of work is a glowing guide in the dark towards Matt and all he believes— it’s a path to lightness.
