Longriver House Concert
July 16, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm$15
David Longoria, who performs as Longriver, will play this summer at kind of a small array in Magdalena. A new father, he’ll be on tour with his family, traveling in the west, a tradition among the lucky.
Two summers ago, to the delight of four of us who gathered for a covid-contained concert, he appeared out of the blue for a spontaneous, outdoor performance in the yard. This time he’ll be able to share what he brings with more of us, so please mark your calendar for Saturday, July 16th, 7 pm. There are lots of reasons to play records, but when I’m in the mood to bask in the sheer pleasures of great songwriting, I’ll play Terry Allen, Jackson Browne, Bruce Cockburn, Bob Dylan, Colin Gilmore, David Halley, Gurf Morlix, Jo Carol Pierce, Joe Reyes, Gillian Welch, among others. I would place David’s album Of Seasons squarely in the midst of these.
In When the Ark Was Building Noah, a song from the album, images build-up, not two by two, but in a panoply of simultaneity. Repeated listening reveals a story untold and told, with every lyric building toward an invisible center of action where the main character never quite appears. He walks on the periphery of something, not aloof or estranged, but distant. He’s clearly in the wind, blown out from the center, where a veteran of the great war never talks about it and a moment ritualizes attention or perhaps a childhood memory. Loneliness and longing are at the core of this mini-epic, along with humility, gratitude, and an open door.
So, we hope you can make it in July for David’s brand of focused attention. He’ll gather you in with a slowly building, panther-step performance of original songs.
Seating is limited. $15 per person, all of which goes to the artist. Please get in touch to reserve your spot.
