Material, a new contemporary art gallery in Salt Lake City, will open its doors to the public on Saturday, August 12, with inaugural exhibitions by Las Hermanas Iglesias and Kathryn Knudsen.
Las Hermanas Iglesias is the collaborative team of Lisa & Janelle Iglesias, sisters born to Dominican and Norwegian immigrants in Queens, NY. Their identities and moniker’s origin are woven within contexts of feminism, collectivity and familial relationships. For the past 15 years, the artists have maintained a transmedia, genre-blurring collaboration alongside individual practices rooted in sculpture and drawing.
Kathryn Knudsen works and lives at the base of the mountains in Provo, Utah. She enjoys exploring and experimenting with all sorts of materials and is especially interested in the use of art to examine and bring notice to humans impact on the environment. Knudsen’s work utilizes a variety of traditional media, abstract forms and found objects to produce an artistic vision with the intent to heal, refashion and beautify.
